Sorry Pablo, I just re read your post and realised I didn't answer your question. No, the whisker strips from the 75-80 doors will not work. The 81-84 strips clip in to 1/2" slots where the older ones clip in to little 1/8" holes. You will like the new style MUCH better though as they are far better at keeping water out of the inner door and keeping the window from rattling.

The SOR page showed the different strips. Looks like they changed to that style strip in mid 1980.
 
That sounds right. I thought it was for the '81 model year but I understand they brought it out early due to the slew of changes for that year.
 
We started thinking about painting the top and whether it was worth it to take the top apart - unbolt the side panels from the fiberglass cap.
There is the gasket that goes between the side panels and fiberglass cap, and I am not sure about the best source for this?
In this SOR diagram I am talking about #5:
OEM price is $339 - I am surprised to see that.
Does anyone know if this is still available from Toyota?
Is the price actually over $300?
Would I be able to re-use my existing gasket?

I've reused all of mine. Is the welting on yours cracked? I always put mine back together with a bit of silicon to make sure I don't get leaks. Don't get me wrong, I'd replace it if money was no object...

I would definitely take your top apart and paint it. Toyota paints it all bolted up, so metal on metal areas are usually just primed. Once you paint the whole thing separately, it will hold up really well. You've done such a good job everywhere else, imagine how sad you'd be if the roof started showing rot.

Just be sure to spray all the bolts for a few days before you start wrenching.

I would never, ever use ccot for something like this. I bought weatherstrip from them once-never again.
 
The door weather strip fit very poorly, was too thick and held water. We also bought his air con unit at the time which looked like it had been cobbled together from JC Whitney's sale bin. When my friend on whose rig this stuff was going rang John mcclung to see if there had been some miscommunication about what was ordered, mcclung was really rude and told him he got what he paid for. That was my last dealing with ccot. Granted that was in the late 90s. Maybe they are more professional now.
 
fj, i responded to your post on rising sun too, here's my response

Lift the top a little at a time and use a screwdriver inserted 90 degrees (pointed inside from the outside) and slide it along to seperate the gasket from the sides. same to seperate from the top. scrub it up with westleys bleche white and a stiff nylon brush, coat with decent rubber protectant. i didn't glue mine on, just started all the bolts loosely until i was sure it was set and watched it when i was tightening down. the gasket has little ribs in it to keep the moisture out, so it doesnt' need glue and i didn't want something that might suck the moisture from the rubber.

definitely scrub it up tho, it will make it nice and pliable. when they get stiff and crunchy, they will leak. had that issue in my 71, water was pouring down the corner windows. cleaned that gasket and reassembled and never had an issue again.
 
I agree with Ige: clean it up really well. On my LX I didn't need any silicon because the rubber was beautiful once I cleaned it and Armour All-ed it. On my old '76 though I needed it at the corners.
 
look for higher quality rubber restore products and check for alcohols in the contents. i used to use son of a gun, don't know if they've changed their menu or not. lately i've been using mcguires cause the ex left a couple bottles years ago, trying to use stuff up so i don't have 20 bottles of everything. ;)
 
Go to Napa and pick up a can of spray Syl-Glide , give the part a good coat and rub it in - works like a charm . Great stuff for use on door seals to keep 'em from freezing in the winter too .
I'd use it on the 'ol lady .....er , nevermind .
Anyway, rank it right up there with anti-seize and The Right Stuff gasket maker .

Goop?! No, I've not heard of that but it makes sense as I believe it's got lanolin in it.

Now if I could just find pure lanolin....
