I replaced the headliner with Line-X

I got tired of fighting the cloth headliner and did bright white line-x instead. Came out great.

I made some progress today. After removing most of the 2K bondo/filler the PO put in and drilling out the POP rivets, I put in the first rivets.
Heads on the fiberglass side and hammering on the gutter bottom.
The stock rivets are 1/8" x 3/8" mounted from the bottom so the head is visible. In my case the PO put in 3/16" x 5/16" POP rivets from the top :bang:
3/16" = 4.7mm. I was not able to get that size but I bought 5mm x 8mm instead. If you put these in like the stock ones, the head is touching the weather seal so in my case I opted for the head on the fiber glass side and hammering the other side until it was pretty smooth with the drip rail/gutter.

If you follow the instructions from CCOT with 2 pieces of rebar the head will deform in any shape possible because you don't have control over the support rebar not even with help of extra person to hold the rebar in place. I choose to make a "cup" in the support rebar to keep the head in shape.

Ready for hammering.

Support rebar in place

After hammering the rivet in, the mushroom is almost the same size as the head.

To be continued......

Great info

Thanks Rudi, I need to replace sections of the metal strip and rebuild sections of crushed fibreglass. Do you know if the metal strip can cut and a new piece tacked in while attached to the fibreglass, I assume not , just asking.
Also I would possibly have squeezed some mastic / sealant into the rivet hole befor peining the rivet over.
Thanks:beer:

I don't think they make fire-proof fibreglass and if they do, they certainly did not 30 years ago! Think you will need to remove the gutter, weld in the new sections and then re-rivet. The rivet will fill the hole when peining, so water ingress will not be a problem. You should also apply sealant over the rivet heads on the fibre side, once you have finished.

This thread is quite interesting....... rivetting actually!

Little set back

While digging out more and more filler I came to the front and noticed that the horizontal strip which mount to the windscreen had a lot of play in it.
Turned out that 3 pieces of frame were totally gone due to leaking rivets.

That's exactly the same thing I was planing to do with mine!
I can do the headliner with my eyes closed, I just don't want one up there!

CCOT sells those. They call them "visors" or something like that.

I know but CCOT don's take orders from outside the USA.
Besides that the price is rediculous. They ask US$ 149.61 for it.

How much may I ask?

I've read several threads on this subject but you're the first one to claim to have washers. I don't see a seam sealer and covering in your pic's. Stock has a tiny bead of sealer between the fiber glass and the gutter wall and has a grayish layer of ???? covering the full width of the gutter. So, maybe the PO never finished the job?

yea i havent read any threads on the roofs yet besides this one .. i dont think the PO did anything to this roof though .. i removed a bunch of material from the gutters already using a wire wheel , planning on replacing the rivets , and patching the fiberglass, its why im here in this thread :).. this is how i got my 62 and its pretty much still like this .

Those are not washers. The rivet heads just look like that. Probably from the installation process.
