ahh hehe cool! Well the Supras and Skylines over here are all grey imports anyways lol. Aristo would be sweet.

My site hasnt been updated in a while :(

Why is he running NSW plates? There is a Candian guy here at work, and I showed him, and he was confused lol...said you guys dont need to run plates up front, so its probably just for show?

I saw your wheeling pics on that thread and said to him "how can you leave that beautiful place?". He said too much snow lol

Yah he was running those plates for show. We always used to tell him his truck was styled very "Aussie" with all the ARB goodies so the plate kind of fit well!

Yah, snow.... although it's pretty awesome to wheel in! The summers are truly gorgeous though. It's funny, me and my gf, have been thinking of moving to Aus. in a couple years after she finishes her nursing degree. If it happens, I'll have to come check out your shop! haha

As far as the front plates go, it depends on what province you are in. In Alberta, yes we do not need front plates but I think you do in all other provinces. I like it simply because it leaves the front end of the vehicle clean looking, just my opinion of course.

Agreed!

He is from "MooseJaw" (hahahah). Yeah If I could run without a front plate, I would 100%!!!

And typo in my last post (Canadian*)

I'm actually working kind of close to Moosejaw right now. Trust me, Moosejaw doesn't have sh*t on BC. The prairies are pretty boring...

I've got a wheel related question for some of you "experienced" 80 series guys out there. I have done a fair bit of searching on the forum and it seems that the sweet spot for backspacing is 3.75-4" on a 8" wide rim. I'm debating if I should go 16x8 with 4.5" BS or 16x8 with 3.5". I really like the wide tire-poke look so the 3.5" BS is very appealing. I'm just worried a 315/75/16 may catch the fender lip on compression. Anyone running a 35 and 3.5" BS wheel care to share?

Appreciate it!

Sorry for the lack of updates. Just waiting to get the LX back from the welder with all the holes filled.

Ordered some Depo LED tail lights, clear corners, and turn signals. Hoping to update the look a little, and I think this should help. Not even going to bother with a projector retrofit until spring when I'll have time to finish it!

My LandTank seat extension kit arrived, really excited for the extra leg room.

Decided on going 37's out of the gate, not going to run 35's and wish I went bigger... Also thinking of doing J-Springs to get a little more lift for the 37's. My OME Heavy coils will be for sale soon, if anyone is interested. I'll be placing my order on August 1st for all of my ARB goodies:
- Snorkel
- Dual Compressor and air hose
- some misc. recovery gear that I need
- and the J's. Kinda want to swing for the Radlfo shocks but I might go with the OME L's for now just to be nice on the wallet and have a worry-free, bolt in application.

Not 80 series related, but I need to post SOME pics. Got some new wheels/tires on my DD.

Tundra looks good! I always thought that was the best body style for the tundra and that new bigger tundra should have just grown that version. Lol

I agree! I love my Tundra... deep down inside I want it to be long travel, have 35" tires, a bobbed bed, with a custom RTT cage/LT rear setup. However thinking like that will probably have me killed at this point.

I picked up a few goodies for the Cruiser yesterday and had some time to install some of them. I didn't have quite enough time as I wanted to turn wrenches and install, but I figured I could grab some photos of the truck in it's current form:

LX450 holes filled and ready for LineX - yah, the paint is in terrible shape. Going to do a proper detail once the LineX is done.

New LED tailights:

New clear corners and marker lights: (once I get the LC grille, I'll be doing those Depos and I'll get my retrofit going..)

IMG_1759.jpg by RickaShay24, on Flickr

Started working on getting my new speakers in, I ordered a pair of Rockford T-165S for the front and T-165 for the rears. I got the door panels trimmed for the 6.5" rears but I had to run a small spacer to clear the power window arm. They should bolt in nicely now. Hoping the fronts are going to fit without issue....

Placed an order from ARB as well, on the way:
- CKMTA12 Dual compressor
- Tire Inflation kit and guage
- Safari Snorkel
- Recovery Strap and Snatch Block
- Front 850J-springs

Also bought a set of 2012 OEM FJ Cruiser wheels which are the same as the 5th Gen 4Runner Trail Edition wheels. I just needed a set of 17's to run until my SCS wheels land and are sent to OMF for a beadlock conversion. I've liked these wheels ever since they came out, so I'm excited to get them on the Cruiser as well as some new tires! I keep bouncing back and forth between 35's and 37's. I'm planning a big expo trip down to Moab, NorCal, Death Valley, and Washington in the spring and I'm thinking the 35's would be a little more practical. I'm curious what you re-geared guys are getting MPG wise with 37's? If I stick to 35's the gears will remain stock until I switch at a later date.

Decided on going 37's out of the gate, not going to run 35's and wish I went bigger... Also thinking of doing J-Springs to get a little more lift for the 37's.

May be different for the 80, but with 5:29's and 37's my runner is dead on the speedo.

LOL, well I'm a hypocrite. Or at least indecisive. See post below... on another note though, your 3rd gen is BADASS.

UPDATE - Photo dump.

I have found that my LX build thread has been lacking a ton of photos in comparison to my old 4Runner build. I finally had some time off and despite the copious amounts of work I've been doing on my house, was able to sneak some Cruiser' time in. I'll start with some mods:

The first chance I got, I was Montana bound. The border was calling my name and the owners of Montana Shipping Outlet were crying for their warehouse space back as I had acquired a gold mine of parcels in their holdings.

The ARB CKMTA24 is a piece of art, I can't wait to get this hard-mounted under the hood. Along with a barrage of other ARB goodies...

Although all of the above is now landed in my garage, I had no time to do the install. I did however get my interior back in and also replaced the fuel sock filter that is inside the gas tank. I did this before throwing the carpets back in. Old vs. New:

I had some plans change on my wheels. Originally I was going to get some SCS wheels converted to beadlocks via OMF. I still would like to do this but the Cruiser seems to need more work than I originally intended, which means the beadlock funds need to be allocated elseware. My decision was made easy once I saw the new SCS F5 in Matte Gray. The icing on the cake is the fact that they now offer 3.5" BS on this wheel which give me that WIDE stance than I want. New wheels mean new tires, so I had a set of 5 Goodyear MT/R Kevlars shipped from Discount Tire Direct in the 315/75/16 flavor. I have been debating 37's but I couldnt justify the cost increase. Plus the fact that a re-gear would be mandatory. Based on looks alone, I'm happy with my decision (I'm aired down to 11psi in the pic below)

As you may have guessed from the above photo, I was able to sneak to the mountains for a couple days and managed to do a little bit of wheeling. It was cool driving the 80 offroad for the first time and comparing my built 3rd Gen 4Runner. The 80 is just solid feeling and I really like it for the technical stuff, but wow do I miss the IFS for the washboards. Baja'ing down the fire roads isn't really the 80's strong suite! It may have something to do with my ProComp shocks but it's still quite apparent where the SFA and IFS differ. Anyways, a few shots from the weekend. Please ignore my bumperless truck, I will have that remedied shortly! haha

The 3.5" BS seems to be perfect for this tire size. Any more poke and I think the tires would be catching the body under articulation. At full bump here:

I did a few odds and ends over the last couple of days. Installed my Blue Sea aux. fuse block under the hood to keep all of my wiring nice and tidy. I made a small square bracket for the fuse block and then attached it to a factory hose routing bracket.

20120904-IMG_1950.jpg by RickaShay24, on Flickr

The previous owner had installed an Aux. Engine Fan that he sourced from an older 4Runner (2nd gen?). I think it was used to help keep the auto transmission fluid cool when towing, if I understood his explanation correctly. When we installed it (I actually did the install a couple years ago helping the PO out) we had to delete the horns to get it to fit. I totally forgot about this little detail when I bought the LX, and it bothered me not having the horn. I changed the fan mountings slightly to allow the horns to fit once more and still clear the hood. I also ran some thicker gauge wiring to negate any future issues with the fan.

20120904-IMG_1949.jpg by RickaShay24, on Flickr

Here are a couple photos of the stereo post install. I installed the tweeters in the small plastic panel on the inside of the mirrors while the door panels were off. I thought I was so clever getting them to fit so nicely, until I put the door panels back on and realized that the tweeters would be blocked by the dash when the doors are closed. lol Serves me right for not checking in advance I guess.... I will leave them as-is because even though they are blocked, it still sounds 100% better than before.

Hey buddy.. From one 3rd gen T4R owner to another, what's the transition expectation going from your 3rd gen to the LX450. I've had some mighty temptations lately and have been wanting one. However, as built as my 3rd gen is I'm having problems letting go. Especially cus I've dumped way too much money in it to just have to start all over again. I just don't want to have any remorse or regrets if I were to make the switch. With that said, are you happy about the switch? I'm sure you miss the 4Runner at times, but what do you miss more/less and what parts make you feel like you did the right thing?

Thanks

Hey man, good to hear from you over here!

First off, I'll admit, my seat time in the Cruiser is minimal at best, in comparison to how much I wheeled the 4Runner.

That being said:

CONS
- It sucks starting over. I was ready/planning 35's and a crawl box on the 4Runner if I was going to keep it. It was pretty much "done" when I sold it and it was so nice just being able to enjoy the vehicle and go explore. Don't get me wrong, i LOVE building vehicles but sometime I forget actually how much labor/time/money went into creating the 4Runner. Now I'm given a reality check with the LX.
- Solid Axle is terrible on washboards: this might be because I have absolutely sh** shocks, but I could instantly see the difference in regular drivability when going to the LX. Not that I'm a baja racer but even running logging or forestry access roads in the LX are way more painful than the 4Runner ever was. I mean I expected it not to be as good as the IFS but I won't even tempt such roads now in the LX unless my tires are below 25psi
- It's gutless, more so than my 4Runner... lol:bang:
- I might be the only one, but I think it "feels" like an old vehicle compared to my 4Runner, despite it being only a year in age difference. The LX feels more like my old 94' Yota pickup. However some of that might go back to the suspension differences

PROS
- it's a tank. And it's awesome. LOL It's just a bigger and more solid feeling rig. With the drawbacks of the SA as you drive on the pavement, come the advantages offroad. I find it way more comfortable in really off-camber situations and front wheel travel is improved. Although I dont have any travel numbers to confirm that.
- Even in my LX's half-built form, without bumpers, it turns heads all the time. They are more rare than 4Runners and I am constantly catching people pointing and gawking. I guess it's just cool seeing people appreciate the Cruiser, cause like I said, it's awesome!
- Interior space: this was one of my biggest draws to this platform. I just wanted more room especially headroom. The rear quarters are way taller and are going to be so much less cramped when my sleeping platform is done.
- Ability to run 37" Tires without that much work.... 35's are easy.
- Rear sliding windows are super cool if you plan on sleeping inside and the rear tail gate vs. hatch is a god-send.

I think as far as reliability is concerned they would be on par. Although the 4Runner definitely requires less baby-sitting of small maintenance items. PHH, head gasket issues, bad wiper seals are always something in the back of my head. Gas mileage is slightly worse in the LX but not by much. One of the big movers for me was the fact that my LX is an Arizona vehicle and completely rust free and it had lower miles. I've always wanted an 80 and the timing was perfect. The truck fell into my lap and I wasn't even looking.... My circumstances have also changed, having a DD and the LX as my "play" vehicle is awesome. I think if I didnt have the dedicated DD I honestly would have been happier in the 4Runner. I think you also have a DD?? Hope something within that ramble helps...

Congrats on your engagement Addison! Great pics, as always!

The Runner was a new design in 1996...and the V6 was the first decent one ever offered by Toyota. I sold my 97 80 and DD a 98 Runner. I wish I could trade the Runner for my 97.

Dunno what happened to the quote... Responding to the "LX feels older than the Runner" comment.

Thanks Ian! Hope your doing well. Hows the GX?

Yah, there's no doubting that the 80 was indeed at the end of it's era in 97' while my old 4Runner was in it's infancy and full of "late-90's innovation". Your right though, the 5VZE IS the first good V6 Toyota built, and it's rock solid at that. I was more stating the fact as it's something I didnt really think about when switching platforms initially. And something to be considered if you DD the vehicle.

I agree though, I already love the 80.

The GX is doing just fine, I may have a line on another HDJ81 though, and that's got me excited again!

^As I mentioned Ian, I'm very excited to see your new HDJ81 when it lands!

Got the Cruiser back from LineX. I'm away at work but the fiance was nice enough to pick it up and snap a photo for me:

I'll take a bunch of hi-res photos when I get home.

I somehow got lucky and was able to get home for the weekend. Cleaned the truck up, re-installed my Cruisin' Offroad sliders, installed the Slee bumper, did the washer relocation kit to make room for my ARB compressor under the hood, and moved my A/C dryer out of the way. Pretty productive day!

Here's some shots of my days labor and the new LineX:
