Tom, isn't it awesome to have such a excellent running truck!! @FJ40Jim has the touch!! I mean he can get a rig purring like a kitten from thousands of miles away. He is one HELLLLL of a Mechanic!!

Jim did the same thing for me. He rebuilt my carb and test ran it at his shop. I followed his instructions to a TEE. While I was waiting on my carb to get finished I removed the intake/exhaust manifold and had it resurfaced and spot faced, removed the EGR and had blocking plate made, also welding up EGR port below carb on intake manifold. Removed smog pump and all associated hoses.

When I received my carb I sat down with his desmog diagram and started studying his diagram again. One hose at a time, very meticulously routing them, I had connected or plugged every vacuum port.

I then sat in the drivers seat, pulled the choke, pumped the gas 4-5 times.......VRRRUUUMMMMM!! I thought that is just unbelievably awesome, to go from poor idle, hard start, dying at stop signs........to a perfect idle, easy peasy starting and doesn't die until I turn off the key!!!

I would bet, you are going to have a warm fuzzy feeling in your heart knowing you have a real dependable rig and can drive it anywhere without worrying about it acting up.

old school I felt exactly the same way when it started I just knew it was finally right!!!!! It has been a LONG road of rough running and I am SO grateful to Jim C for his excellent work. There were so many times I did not go on some great treks for fear of it not running right, stalling in traffic or just cutting out and hard starting. I drove for a LONG time with one foot near the clutch and one ready to give it gas if and when it would cut out!! Me and my rig have a LOT of making up for lots of lost treks and many, many desolate mountain and desert roads to explore.....................the fun starts now!!!!! My brother will be joining me soon in his '76 as well. They are amazing rigs and I can't believe how well a 40 year old rig can purr!!

Tom, these rigs will purr for ever as long as you take care of them, i.e. change oil at every 3,000 miles, filters and keep the carb clean, they are made to last!

Now I need to get pics up of me enjoying this great rig!!!!! Will try and post up some AZ pics soon.

oldschool it took me some time to find the components for Jim C's desmogg diagram-many were missing as one of the PO's had removed and gotten rid of. Big thanks to Georg at valley hybrids for his help too. I have often wondered why anyone with ANY common sense would neglect, or remove things from these almost perfectly designed vehicles for no apparent reason. I came across the original carb in a box with "other extra parts" almost 2 years ago and knew it must be part of the puzzle for proper plumbing of fuel evap and necessary to run properly as the '80 non-USA carb did not have connections this one does. I began replumbing a little at a time, then thorough check for vacuum leaks....could find none. So I knew the carb was most likely the culprit. Now what to do with the '80 non-USA Aisan which I am sure has an idle circuit problem although it was rebuilt TWICE by an individual I am sure is nowhere as skilled as Jim C. Would like to get another '78 original OEM Aisan carb as a backup and have Jim work his magic on it! I have as many others of us have spent thousands on my rig in repairs but most all of the work does not compare to Jim C's expertise-can't thank the man enough!!!! It is the best money I have spent on the rig so far..........more to do but really enjoying the process!!!

OK when I get home......................

Short little excursion today! My Uncle and I took a 30 mil drive thru the Mingus Mountains up and over the 7023 ft saddle then DOWN(down seems funny here) to the old mining town of Jerome, AZ at 5300 ft. The 40 ran great and was a joy to drive although a bit chilly at 7K ft with the new/used Bestop bikini on it. The pics are at one of the overlooks about a half mile before Jerome. He is a retired Engineer and the true
motorhead of the family. His help has been so influencial in getting the FJ40 running in the state she is in now along with JimC's exceptional rebuild of my original OEM Aisan. I have work to do on my drivers side rear quarter and then will be moving on to getting the hard top and doors on as well. I am really enjoying driving without the top on though!!! Off road the dust can be a pain though...

Nice pics and I swear I just took the same front bumper on my red bj42 tonight. Does that one serve as air tank also for air locker?

Sweet cruiser!

Looks great Tom!! Congrats on making a drive!!

Nice looking "FJ" Tom!

I hope your heater worked fine at those high elevations!

Great job on getting all the bugs worked out of the 2F!

Mike my heater could crank more for sure, will refurbish it here soon-have the kit, now the time!!!! Funny Mike that some guys who stopped and were taking pics said "nice Jeep". I politely told them it was a "FJ40 Landcruiser" one of them then said "oh those things are way better than any Jeep". He had only seen it from the side but when he looked at the front he excalimed that. Yes Danny there will be lots of exploring pics coming from me soon.!!! After the drive I noticed I must have lost a rear wheel cylinder on the passenger side:bang:, they are all less than 1.5 years old!!!! I could recognize that drip on the tire anywhere................................easy fix though:beer:

Mike you would have laughed SO hard when those guys said that!!!!! Interesting as I was commenting on his new Tacoma, it was a nice one.

as far as the best way to get rid of the dust: use an air compressor and blow it out

Eddy, bummer is the cylinders in there are all new OEM, or should I say NOS OEM! Maybe it is an axle seal leak but those are only 2 years old as well.................will get into it soon.
