engine mounts

Not 100% pleased with how the motormount gussets came out but I am done fighting with them (some days you just have to accept the loss & move on). Got the blower installed...:)

Then threw the bib and hood on to check for hood clearance. Have good clearance on the fan to radiator. I knew that the original drivetrain sat about 2"s to the drivers side, however I never noticed that the radiator mount was also shifted ( it makes since just hadn't noticed it till today). I will probably section the radiator mount and extend it so that it is over the frames rails on both sides.

Hi,

i am kinda satisfieyd to see that other people run in to the same mental problems like me.:)

Nice gearbox:hhmm:

Matthes yeah its a labor of love that I am entirely to ate up with!

Here is a pic of the shifter installed, factory boot may even work once the hole on the dog house has been massaged...

The seat was taken out to remove the gas tank, its sitting in the back of the truck. I have also removed quite a bit of the floor on the passenger side of the dog house. This sat. I am going to cut the dog house up where it doesn't fit.

I really love your setup. It was just look a little like your future passenger shoudnt have a left leg.;)

I sure wish I could make beautiful welds like yours. Nice work. All of it.

They are a mixture of Justin's & my welds. (mostly Justin's) I spend most of the day on fitment then tack it all together and have him burn it (when he is at the shop, when he isn't I just do it myself)

I weld decently just not 100% of the time ;)! Justin welds great 99% of the time...
I have spent my fair share of time cutting pieces back out not because I didn't think it was strong enough, but because it wasn't strong enough and have the look I am going for. (You will start to consider technique alot when you force yourself to sit on a grinder for extended amounts of time just to correct a weld that should have taken a few minutes the first time!)

Thanks for the comments I appreciate the feedback (good, bad, or indifferent) this drivetrain is exactly what I have wanted to build for quite some time. Although it will be the last all Toyota drivetrain I build for myself *I think...

You are correct the passenger will have a little less room than normal because the t-case is clocked flat ( I debated this at great length but in the end decided I wanted a flat belly with some room to spare; 2 piece drive shaft so that the rear could be clocked down and for link placement ). Factory the passenger has more floor space than the driver, now the passenger will have just a bit less than the driver ( the 40's factory drivetrain is offset to the drivers side by about 2"s; now the drivetrain is centered).

Passengercomfort is overvalued:)

Most of last Saturday felt like a waist however a major change was made, started out the day by marking up the dog house and trimming it down to fit the t-case clocked flat. Then I started thinking about the angle the front two piece shaft as it was looking kind of steep.

So I clocked the t-case all the way down, the only negative is that its quite a bit closer to the frame rail ( about 3/4" till it will touch). I am now going to build an additional control arm that will go from the trans mount, catch the drain bolts in the t-case, then catch a rubber bushing. (I'll draw something up in paint to display it.)

First pictures are of the t-case in the flat position.

It doesn't look like much however it dropped the front output by over 2"s, and the bottom of the t-case is still barely above the bottom of the frame rail.

Also noticed just how far the seat is off, I was planning to change it anyways. The seat will be shifted 5.5" to the center its way off... Previous owner special!

Also noticed just how different the early and late dog house's are, early dog houses are considerably narrower. I may switch to an early style because I have to modify all of it anyways. I set and early one it there just to see how it looks and I like it more... However we will see...

That sucker hanging below the frame now?
you "need" a 2 piece shaft, or do you "want" it? should be a straight shot!

Flat Skids are worth way more than passenger comfort..
(if you dont belive that, now is a good time to head on back to the 40 section!)

Nope the t-case is still above the bottom of the frame rail, I still intend to have a flat belly.

I "want" a 2 piece shaft although the angle isn't that bad. I am all about function over form, just trying to build the best I can...

Nice build ! I'm looking forward to the suspension segment.

In the dog house part 2

ME TOO!

Again had a very long weekend playing with the dog house... After two days of heading in one direction, accidentally figured out how I will complete the dog house.
I'll show a few pictures of the process, we had been working towards, found the direction we were working in was starting to get very complicated. When we where putting the tools up I dropped a piece we had made and it fell into a sweet position. I called Justin over to look after discussing it for about an hour we decided that was the direction we will press towards. So now i am at square one again, but I feel like I have direction once again...

Started with an early style dog house as its much smaller than the late style, I like it better...

Was working really hard to make it look kinda like a 40 dog house. The more I played with it the more I realized it was going to be hard to finish, nicely...

Also the way I was headed it ate up most of the floor. Like I said once we started cleaning up I dropped the piece we made and it fell very close to where it needed to be....

So it wont look like a 40 dog house any more but it will give me lots a room on the passenger side. I will make some pieces that are mitered together. To form all the way around the opening then cap the top piece...

Thanks again for the comments guys, sheet metal work is both my least favorite & least skilled area... I much prefer heavier metal fab work!

That being said I will give it my best try!

Nice build.

I love my 5vze! like you said, it has the power of a junkyard 350, but lighter, smaller, and more reliable.

I dont trailer my 4runner, and I can hold 65mph up and down hills with an auto, without getting out of overdrive. I have also gotten as good as 18mpg on the highway. And my runner weighs over 5,000lbs, on 37's, with an exo-cage... I got 18 mpg with 5.29's and 37" rockers...but currently im on 37" trxus, and 4.88's, and the truck feels even stronger, so im confident I can get even better mileage.

Right on I am excited about this motor, it will have a bit more grunt and will windup which should be interesting/fun/break stuff with a manual! 18 MPG is really good mileage for a wheeler in my opinion.

4rnr where do you wheel an at what elevation?

Thought I would update this, Fiance & myself just bought our first house so we have been moving etc for the last several weekends, however all is not lost as I now have my own shop 1225 sq ft. all to myself. Spent all of my cruiser bankroll on getting some radiant tube heaters (they should be delivered in about two weeks...)

I am anxious to get back to work on the 40 however. I have to get the house completely done before I get the shop all cleaned up, so there will be a little down time. Its good to have a little break it will keep the work at a better level.

Also I am taking off the rest of the week to head out to Parker AZ. for the BITD Blue water challenge. If you are out there I'll be pitting for Korey Keysar (#1020) come by and say hello!
