Going to move the build-up over here since the direction it is going fits better in this forum.

Plans for the truck have changed drastically from where it started. Two things I want for this truck are to be able to drive on the road at (or close to) freeway speeds, and be able to give the keys to my fiancé and not worry about her or the truck. Oh & obviously I want the truck to wheel very well...

I have spent quite a bit of time around desert racing (also this isn't my first rock crawler) and would like a rig that can be wheeled hard, yet still drive down the road decently. That being said the truck will be linked front and rear, however the travel will be controlled and the suspension geometry will well thought out.

Wanted to keep this truck all Yota so instead of running a LS engine I am going to run a 5vze & keep it slow. Another goal for the build is to keep the rig sub 5,000 lbs. & keep the feel of the rig still a little 40'ish...

Shooting for roughly 106" (+/-) wheelbase, full width axles with LC 9.5" thirds, relatively low height, and 37-40” tires. Obviously a Redline cage & tube fenders, there even might be some parts built on this rig that will be put into normal Redline production.

Once the rig is complete we will post a thread for naming it.

The hardware is listed below....

Starting with a 77 FJ-40....

Found a 2004 5vze with 20k miles, swapped in a 2002 manual wire harness & ECU.

Redline built a trans that measures only 22 15/16" long.
Its a mutt trans R150 bell housing, R151 nose cone, R151 gear set, R151 center plate, AX-15 output shaft, and AX-15 tail housing. Which will bolt directly to an Atlas. (can also be made to bolt to a v8, by changing the input shaft and bellhousing)

Pulling the motor, cutting rivets...

For the record it drove to the shop & into the garage under its own power. Part of me is saddened by this because I know the drivetrain going in certainly wont last 33+ years or be half as reliable...
Ahh well I'll have to build another one on down the road that stays more true to the fold...

Drivetrain is out approximately hour and half later. You can also see that this cruiser was originally Mustard! It will be that color again some day.

Then started removing rivets to release the motor mounts, shock mounts, & trans mounts....

Pressure washed the frame to remove the crud, basically washed an entire tree out of the frame to include 4 pine cones and tons of branches.

Starting drivetrain fitment...

Started getting measurements for drivetrain placement, the V6 will fit very easily and will be kind of goofy looking because of how much room is behind it. We Don't have exact placement established, however we measured it for three different places... Will most likely leave it in the most forward position though.

Atlas barely clears the frame rail at this point.

Had to remove a small section of the floor in order to clearance the Atlas and still have nothing hang below the frame rail.

I was hoping for some updates on this thing. Keep it up!

Right on E-wheeler I have been itching to work on this thing, finally getting to spend some time on it... Hows your 40 doing been hitting the trails?

For now I am going to keep the hard top, however we will see if it stays... Have some future body mods that may negate the need for it...

Motor mounts are about 90% still have some gusseting to complete before they will be considered finished.

Looks slick!

Scaled weight

Since we have a set of corner scales we weighed this truck before we took it apart. The 40 did have 35's on it and only had about a gallon of gas...

Overall weight is 3676 lbs.

Pas rear 858 860 Driver Rear
Pas front 956 1002 Driver Front

Back 1718 Weight distribution is 53/47 Front to back
Front 1958

Pas 1814 Weight distribution is 51/49 driver to passenger.
Driver 1862

Transmission mount

Started work on the transmission mount, probably would have finished, however I nicked my chin with shrapnel-ed flap disc. Probably should have gone in & had it looked at but I wanted to get more done... ;) Lens on the phone needs to be cleaned I apologize...

Will plate the vertical gussets to help with lateral strength. Top plate is 1/4", vertical gussets are 3/16", and tube is 1-1/4 X .1875 wall.

Will finish the trans mount next weekend, the drivetrain will then be able to stay in the truck for a little bit. Which will be nice because I am tired of putting it in and then taking it out hehe...

Trans mount

Cleaning the finished mount up for paint, would love the natural finish of 120 grit except for the rust it would make.

Nuts are accessible through the dimpled holes to the rubber trans mount
