You should know better than to tempt somebody like that...

BTW have you started crackin at your 2FE yet?

It's sputtering along. I've been slowly stripping the FJ62 of parts that will not be needed for the swap but my holdup at the moment is that I'm using the FJ62 for storage. I'll soon be picking up a shed to be dedicated to parts storage so that I can keep things organized. The 2F still runs ok but FI will make it that much better.

On Post #80, you talked about a problem with head bolts. My 3fe head is out of the shop and the 2f block will be finished soon. I have the old head bolts for both the 2f and 3fe, but now I'm a little confused as to which ones to use, especially if I need new ones after I check the old ones out. I thought the 3fe bolts were the ones to use because of the shorter 3fe head, but you're saying they bottomed out and you ended up using the 2f bolts, right? Before anyone says it, I know I could just try the two sets of bolts to see which work, but I probably will have determined if I need new ones before I get to that point and I'd like to get the right ones. Now that I've got the smart @#$ filter in place :grinpimp:, everyone else feel free to chime in. I've read and re-read all the posts on mud about the 2fe and as I get this project off the ground, that quote about standing on the shoulders of giants has never been truer. Without this thread and Pappy's write up, I would've been too intimidated to tackle the cowl harness, but I knocked it out way ahead of schedule and now I'm trying to sort through all the little things.

Aww, shucks ... [shuffling feet]

Seriously, all the 2fe write ups on mud have benefited me in some way, but wiring has always been my nemesis. Thanks to your write up and Drew's videos, it was just like you said, tedious, (man that's a lot of tape), but not hard. Of course I haven't actually hooked it up, so maybe I shouldn't pat myself on the back just yet. Regardless, not too long ago I looked at the 3fe EFI system and figured it ran on microchips, laser beams, and magic, and now I think I understand it a bit better. For anyone attempting this project, don't be intimidated by the wiring. Just remind yourself from time to time that the 3fe EFI has about the same "computing" power as a modern calculator and go by the wiring diagrams. I've got the computing power of an abacus and I was able to do it (succesfully I hope).

I live in White Plains just outside of Anniston. My dad worked for the Forestry commission for years and always talked about going down around Montgomery and getting a reptile class from someone in that area. He specificaly mentioned that the gentleman showed them an indigo snake and fed a diamondback to it in front of the class. Your picture makes me wonder if that was you. On a side note, I used to teach a couple courses at Pelham Range and roamed all through the hills there, so if you ever need to do anything with massasaugas, there's one under about every fourth rock you turn over.

oh no kidding? I lived in Gadsden for a short while and was in your area at least once a week. Beautiful place. I would say you're golden as far as the wiring goes, when I fired it up my only issues were a couple splices that I'd cut some corners on and had to re-do, but as far as the correct placing everything went fine. Thanks and I'm glad it was useful to you!

Hope you didn't have to bike from Gadsden to my neck of the woods every week. Doable, but that's quite a trek, especially in the heat. Your videos really helped a lot. The wiring diagrams were key, but actually seeing the process brought it all together. Guess I'm a visual learner. Now, about those head bolts...... 3fe or 2f?

ha! no, we had cars, too haha. on page 2 I had planned on using the 3fe bolts, but due to the different heights of the 2 heads I had to use the 2f bolts instead. So far so good.

Bet you caught some flak from some older LDS guys about the cars. "Back in my day sonny, all we had were single speed bikes and we were glad to get them." Thanks for the answer about the head bolts. I have all the 2f bolts and they look like they're in good shape. I'll give them a final once over and use them when I do the assembly.

So, I've hit a minor snag. On my 3fe cowl harness, the PO cut off the AFM connector. I grabbed a new connector for $15.00 and figured wiring it up would be a cinch. However, now that I look at it, I'm not really sure which wire goes to which position on the connector. The connector has each wire/pin labled 1-7 from R to L looking from the top and the diagram shows the color coded wires going to numbered positions. Are these the same positions as labled on the connector? With a couple thousand wrong combinations and only one right one, can someone post a picture of a factory wired AFM connector, or at least give me your best condescending sigh and tell me that it's really easy, and the answer is..... ? Thanks in advance and here's some pictures so you can see my dilema and maybe have a good laugh at my expense.

The diagram has it correct, just make sure you're reading the diagram and the connecter from first to last and not last to first. Also be sure your wires aren't going into blanks; you've got 6 wires on the harness and 7 wires on the connector. Be sure everything lines up correctly so the 6 wires make it all the way to the pins on the AFM.

Once again mud saves the day. I know I should just trust the wiring diagram, but before I started splicing things together, I wanted to be as sure as I could. Thanks to Drew for the written explanation and to Godwin for the picture confirming it.

As luck would have it, I'm using an 88 harness, so we're good. Thanks again. Did you ever teach Alabama forestry commission students a few years back?
