I would strongly suggest sourcing all the parts you can from the same vintage of 3FE.

Ditto. There are differences between FJ62 and FJ80. Personally, I would aim for the FJ80 bits over the FJ62. Better ignition.

Glad to see your still alive, you must be 100 by now. Hard to believe we have only been online(off-road.com) for <15 years. Feels like 30~40.:D

I guess to dont come around the 60 forum much?;)

Excuse me sonny. Who you calling 100? And for the record, I joined off-road.com in Sept 1999, though it seems like it was longer than that. I just looked and they still seem to think I exist.

I'm just glad your still around! Always wanted to go wheeling with you, but never made it down there.;)

PS, I think I'm a Sept99 member as well. But there was some sort of Offroad.com before that time, but it shut down? and a bunch of us joined the new site in the same month/year.

Is this an original tank or a recall? we were planning on using an external pump with our tank to avoid having to replace the dreaded internal pump.

it was replaced. it does have feed tube issues....maybe replace the pump..but its in good shape and worked when I pulled it out. I needed a 60 tank with a straight pick up feed.
How bout that starter?

I see this thread is a bit old but i wonder how your swap went? Im considering the same swap making my 2f a 2fe seems like a cheaper option then bj'ing it even though i think that would be interesting aswell.

I would like to also know how hard this was as i will be doing it myself. Ive sorced some parts but i wonder where you found yours?

Thanks and hope yours worked out

I had to rebuild the 1fz in the lx450 during the time i had planned for this project, but I have 5 weeks after my fall semester that i'm dedicating to this. I found the easiest way to get parts was to get a complete 3fe with all components atatched, rather than looking through all kinds of part outs for individual things and not knowing how they ever worked with each other. (mine came from an fj62 motor swap...good engine, bad tranny, looking for power). I know cruiserparts.net has a full/partial kit for this but it's $$$. The hardest part is integrating the harness, but if money ($750) isn't an issue, cruiserparts.net has a custom plug-n-play harness for this project. HTH.

I was thinking about saving up the money and parting out my top end from my 60 to get the full motor from cruiserparts.

I hope yours works out and if you have anything helpful to know about the swap please add it to this thread as I wont have time with work and school until January so any helpful info would be great.

Thanks
Graham

update

almost finished with finals and will be moving back home to my garage sweet garage. i'll be able to get this project rolling in the next week or two and plan to keep it documented, right now i'm just sourcing the last bits of parts i'll need. i have a 62 ecu coming my way (year unknown), and i found an '88 harness in a part out, pretty happy to get one from the same year as the engine.
question for you all: is there a separate efi harness, or is it all joined up with the dash harness as one? if it is all one integral harness, i think i will separate what i need for the engine and mate it to the 60's dash harness, because i don't want to tear into the dash and change all my switches and things. thoughts?
more updates to come

As I recall, the 3FE has two plugs at the ECU that terminate the engine harness (i.e. come through the firewall) and one plug at the ECU for the cowl harness. You will need the cowl harness (or at least the plug and pigtails off of it) to make the ECU interface with your truck. There are something like 5-10 wires that will need splicing from what I've read.

The engine harness is stand alone and has two plugs for the ECU. The cowl harness needs to be reduced to just the bits for the EFI and has one plug for the ECU, and, in 1988, two connectors to cross join to the engine harness.

Pics of the "extra" connectors below. Round has 5 wires, other has two, for seven total.

If you had a 1989 or newer harness the seven wires are joined into one connector.

thanks for the valuable info, when the harness shows up i suppose it will be easier to tell which wires interface with the rest of the truck. i picked up the head today from the machine shop, it looks beautiful and they did the galley plug as well. i noticed that there were plugs on 5 & 6 for the air injection system. my rail looks stock and covers 1-4, so now i'm a bit confused. can anyone with a 2/3FE tell me if the injection rail is supposed to cover only 4 cylinders? pics to follow.

1) is this stock, just the 4 cylinders?
2 and 3) rebuilt head

I like that table. :) Stock air injection on the 3FE plumbs to the center 4 exhaust ports with 1 and 6 plugged, like you have there.

head bolts

have both 2f and 3fe head bolts. i've reused my 2f bolts twice already, 3fe bolts are out of order since i didn't think i would be reusing them (if that matters). besides the 2 longer headbolts that hold the 3fe bracket, they are all the same.

use the 2f? use the 3f? buy new?

also found this information to be very helpful for those doing this project:

i've been trying to find a diagram of the charcoal canister routing for the 62, but can't find anything. if anyone is kind enough to post a link or a picture of the diagram, or just a picture of the stock routing on the 3fe i'd appreciate it.

decided to go ahead and use the 3fe bolts. they are newer, have only been torqued in the factory, match the lengths better, and i figured they should work just fine a second time because they aren't TTY. EDIT: 3fe head bolts are no good. Apparently the 3fe head is shorter and they bottomed out. Tried using the 2f bolts and they worked. You will need to use the 2 longer 3fe bolts for the Air Injection rail bracket if you choose to use it.
1) head bolt threads cleaned
2) cover painted, 2f bracket installed
3) old spaghetti and guts out for good:)
