Yes, that appears to be the issue…let’s just say that my size makes me better ballast in the bow of a boat than an acrobat to get in the back of the truck.
Is there a way to get the tail gate to drop now that the window has dropped? The handle still does nothing.
Once you get the access panel off, you will need to manually slide the glass up so you can get to the mechanisms. Sliding your glass up shouldn’t be an issue since it sounds like it was held up by dowels anyway. With the glass up out of the way you will see two slim rods going to each side. When you pull the rods to one side it should open the catch. Might be easier if you have a second person pull on the outside handle while you pull the rods to one side. The tailgate may be somewhat heavy so once the catch is released then you can slide the glass back down to safely lower the tailgate. That will be the easy part. Fixing the tailgate is a whole other sort of fun.
OK, this is getting funny....the window appears to have been held up with cardboard!!! Even funnier, I sold my daily driver RS6 Avant...and now it is really cold driving around with the rear window down...they say the best motivator is freezing your ***** off! I guess I know what I am doing this weekend....well not really....a few rounds of whack *uck are in order I am sure.
Harvester, if this is for the orange pig you have in the classifieds section I'm guessing this may affect the desired sales price...or maybe it could be spun as a desirable "feature"

I was so frustrated the other day I said this isn’t for me…for now that fleeting thought has passed. I love this thing the smell of exhaust is like the smell of diesel in the morning when your breaking the inlet! It’s the smell of freedom!
Since it is now all opened up, cut two 2x4’s just the right length so the with one in each side of the tailgate they will hold up the window. 2x4 > cardboard!!! You will leave the cover off but at least the window will be closed. Will give you some time to figure out what parts you may need. Take some pictures and post so we can see what you have and may need.
@Harvester This is my assembly. Motor turns both ways so it checks out good. Internal gear is cracked which is normal but theres a few options floating around on the forum for replacements.
@Harvester Glad to see some additional posts from you on the orange PIG. I have a spare gear to replace the cracked one above. Plenty of good sources here to help you alleviate your frustrations, let me reword that, take care of some of the issues...
PM and I will get it in mail in next day or two if your interested.
OK....so the tail gate will not drop. It appears that I have a working latch...and I have two rods that are attached to the releases on the edge of the tailgate. But even with both of those releases free the gate will not drop. I would guess that the hinges are seized. Have no idea how to get to those yet. Here are a few pictures.
In other news replaced the headlights with the Cruiser Corps LED headlights...very nice!!

@Harvester the tailgate won't open if the connecting rods to the latches are free and not attached. You can manually pull inward on both of the rods at the same time and it should allow the latches to release. (circled in photos). The window will need to be retracted fully into the tailgate for the tailgate to drop. The 55 window needs to be down to open the tailgate. That might be what's causing you to think your hinges are the issue. I'm assuming your window is propped up to the fully closed position.
I'd reattach the rods to the external handle and don't leave any slack. Make sure when the exterior handle is engaged it's pulling the rods inward to cause the latch mechanism to work. Then drop the window all the way into the tailgate so no glass protrudes above the tailgate into the upper channel rubber. At this point, engage the handle again and it should open.
Do you have a rod hanging down on each side of the tailgate (inside) ? if so, pull both of those two rods at the same time (from the inside) and give the gate a bump, should come down.
As yeller asked, the glass has to be removed or down. If not you will have to connect those side rods with the two hanging from the handle with connectors, then lower the glass and open with handle.
Yes, the connecting rod from the center does not reach the connecting rods on each side...Let me do some searching in the archives to see how they go together...I wired tied them super tight and no joy....progress is good...and no one has said man you are FUBAR.
Trying to make a decision if I am in way over my head with this truck or if I should soldier on. I think this is going to be a great truck but without any fabrication ability, I am a little intimidated. And I need to buy some serious tools....
I was digging through the computer at work yesterday and came across the file with all the stuff from my article years ago In Toyota Trails about rear window operation and stuff on the FJ55. I'd be glad to send it in to Mud to have listed in the tech section but don't know how to go about it...

I don't have many pictures of the tailgate, but this is how the connecting rod attaches from the handle linkage to the latch rod.
