Rear Ladder

Nice work! The ladder design looks very clean. Any roof rack plans yet?

That looks awesome. I have a custom made single swingaway with a spare 35 on it. I have been trying to make up my mind abou the other side. Now I know!

Is there any issue with the tyre covering the brake lights/indicators?

looks good. did you put in some type of slide on the bumper for the arms to rest on. I've seen that white cutting board material work great for that.

beaufort is right, UHMW would be great for the arms to rest on.

I love everything about this design, nice and small and the double swing out is way cool.

My only question is the tow clips. Are they welded to the outer plate or do they go through to the mounting clips. I would want to make sure that those suckers are direct mounted to the frame. But that's just me.

So, you going to make a roof rack too? I've got cad drawings of mine if you want to swap??

I used UHMWPE shims directly under the over center toggle clamp. Kinda hard to see in the picture, but the mount for the toggle clamp actually extends below the plain of the swing out. It contacts the plastic shims. This prevents the swing out from travelling any further. Post #40 second picture, you can see kinda see what I am talking about and see the plastic shims a little as well.

The tow clips extend through the bumper and are welded to the frame brackets. They are about 5-6 inches long, but you are only seeing 3 inches of them, so, yup, they are stout.

Roof rack plans are in the works. Not sure how big to make it yet. Also looking at making some hilift mounts. Some that will attach to the spare tire carrier or ladder.

Man Fourrunner, I so want to fab up something like that, but I have a ways to go on my welding skills before I can even start to think about a project like this. VERY nice works, my hat is off to you!!

Well, it might be a good time to practice up. I have learned a lot on this build about my welding skills and lack there of. My welds got a lot better when I picked up a bottle of mixed gas. The only difference is that I don't think I got as good of penatration with mixed versus straight CO2. Having a nice welder helps for this. Go out and buy some scrap metal and start practicing. Do you have flux core or shielded gas? I recommend shielded gas...much prettier welds. Thanks for the comments all...

Hey Mark, Brian was telling me about this thread at the swap and I just found it. That is a really cool carrier man. Excellent work!

That's what I was commenting on earlier in the thread. You can have cold welds with any process...but the gas will indeed help with better welds. Im sure you already know this, but want others who might be getting into welding to know. You just need to get used to being free of the flux! Honestly, this is the bumper I've already sketched out numerous times out of frustration with poor designs that are currently sold for insane prices. I applaud you for getting the gumption to build it.
By far the best rear bumper design Ive seen yet.

that is looking sweet man

keep up the good work i wanna see the final product

Thanks for the comments. Hope to have the welds cleaned up this week and off to the powder coater. Will shot some pics when complete. Hey Mike...how was the swap meet? How's the 40? What did you end up doing for shocks? Dirty, this thing has really added up ($$$), but will be better than most bumpers built out there.

Sweet looking bumper! I noticed the ID plates in the pics... I'm orginally from Twin Falls.

Hey Mike fixed it for ya:flipoff2:

LOL, I thought it was Brian, maybe it was Dylan... :)

Things are good w/ the 40, I guess Bull posted a ton of photos here and on the PBB with some current shots of the rig at the bottom of the page below.

(Dont look at page 12)

For the shocks, I ended up using ford towers and 14" 5125 Bilstiens and 10" in the rear. Turned out great. I dont think it really leans alot for a 40, but I think after driving your rig, mine leans a bit more than yours.

Hey Mark, are you really going to be to mfg these? My roommate has been looking around at the different designs. If you are, let me know and I'll let him know.

Man, I love the bumper, I'm in Pocatello and would love to check it out some time, and talk you into building me one for a discounted price. Seriously, if you decide to fab more let me know and I will try to swing the finances, just don't have the time to build one of my own.
