I've never been to Cullowhee before but I've heard it's an excellent trip, and we're really looking forward to it. Do I need to do anything special to my 80 before the trip? I have extended the diff breathers, and I plan to remove the running boards for the trip, but didn't know if there was anything else that might be necessary/encouraged. Also, what are the camping sites going to be like? I'm bringing my 2 yr. old daughter along as well, and I would like to get a larger tent for her to be able to play in if it rains, but not something that's going to take me a hour to put up and take down. Any suggestions?

eventhough- I used to kayak a lot, and I still try to get out when I can, but it's getting harder to find the time.

I would also take the spare tire out from below (put it in the back or on top). If you are unlocked, mud tires would be more than sufficient. Either way, you will be just fine considering we have winches just in case.

The camp sites are generally wide open. The only time this could change is if there is a heavy storm coming through; in which case we often get off the top of the mountain and take a tighter camping spot off the side of the trail. Still not a big deal.

Bring plenty of fluids to drink and food. Bring a set of warm clothes just in case, and rain gear.

It's on the calendar. Since I don't have a pig I'll have to make a pig of myself at supper. I'd costume Bonnie but I will not disgrace her by making her piggish.
Looking forward to getting to know Cullowhee better, and less trail traffic eh?

Hijack on: Alex, I like the new avatar. Hope you did a good job celebrating the birthday last week.
Hijack off.

Question regarding this: I have a few buddies that want to come for a weekend. We would defently be bringing my FJ Cruiser and my roommate's Grand Cherkoee on 35's and a few friends in the cars, also the possibility of a 4 runner too. Would this be alright or is it exclusive? If in fact it is exclusive, could someone send me a map so that we could do the expedition on our own? I have a garmin GPS for maping once we would be making the run but I kinda wanted to do it with you guys. Let me know the specifics regarding these questions.

Zane this run if for UC members and anyone else who is driving a 55. As much as I would like to show you where to go I just cannot give out information on this place. What I would suggest is you join UC and come on this run. We do not want to open this place to everyone. It will not last long if we do that. I hope you understand.

Marshall, i agree.

Zane, i'm sorry, i really am. It's a special place to me and others that have been up there. It's a very delicate place and there have allready been issues in the past with folks (mostly college kids from WCU...of which i was a college kid at WCU once) getting up there, flipping cars off the side of the roads, getting stuck, getting hurt, ect.. to the point where at one time they were going to gate it off completely. We begged and pleaded and also got the locals involved who helped keep it open. But we were warned by the park rangers and the locals that we are on strike 2...one more strike and we are out.

So with that said, i hope you do not feel that i am being arrogant in not wanting to give out directions to the areas. We would be more than happy to take you along on our group trips and show you the trails and let you enjoy them with us. But we cannot risk losing such a special place.

yep for the sake of keeping this place open we have to keep the location some what of a secret........... so that is doesn't get used and abused and then shut down all together.

We have lost to many of our local wheeling holes in recent years and we won't let the same thing happen to Cullowhee.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, i just got assigned to be in Pittsburg the week of the pumpkin pig run. I'm bummed because i REALLY, REALLY, REALLY wanted to go. I feel violated.

Don't worry, we will take lots of pictures to tease you with! :)

Sucks!! You don't have to stay for the weekend do you? Just catch up!

I do have to stay the weekend!! This really bites. It was a job offer to do some contract work for BB&T to make some extra $$ so i can dump it into the cruiser. It was an all or nothing deal. So he said i would have to make two trips to Pittsburgh and one trip to Kansas. I said i was ok with that. He then emailed me back my flight itinerary and BAMMM!!!

suuuuucks

i will try to change the date, but can't make promises.

Looks like I have secured the cabin again. Talked with JP would make a good backup plan in case of unforeseen issues. Also those of you who don't want to camp or just just don't want to rough it can stay there. It's about 2 miles from the trail. Also makes a good place to leave trailers. Nice little 3 bedroom cabin. Those of you who chose this can head up and meet us on the bald Saturday and do some mild wheeling or join the group for the fun stuff.

I'm planning on going up to the cabin Thursday night and possibly smoking some pork and brisket for dinner Friday night. Anyone is welcome to join me.

Hmmmmm, while it doesn't appear I can make the actual run, I am tempted to take you up on the offer for Thursday night. Maybe check out the other spur(s) in the back 40 too, night time style...

Oh, I concur that it is a great place for base camp and an easy drive to either route up the mountain to the chosen bald for camping.

camping

Marshall,

What is the camping situation? Grassy knoll, tents only, small pop-ups okay, large RV's can do it? Trying to get an idea of how much and wnat to bring. Thanks

Mike
