An FYI. I was curious about the Renu costs so I called a local dealer to get an estimate for sh*ts and giggles. For cleaning the tank it would be around 250 and the Renu system is around 700. The process does look thorough though

I am having a similar issue. Dropped my tank yesterday, and it was full of rusty sludge. Has anybody had any experience with the spectra fuel tanks? I also called Renu, also stated it starts around $700, but he has to see it. I found factory replacement tanks but those cost about $900 plus shipping. I found the Spectra tanks, but they sound somewhat generic, and might have some fitment, or parts issues. Be curious to hear how yours is going Jason.

Hey Josh,
Luckily mine cleaned up perfectly. Looked brand new on the inside after the two baths that Burbank Radiator did.
I asked him about coating the inside, he does it for $75, but said mine didnt need anything beyond the cleaning.
The cleaning process did start to take off the rubberized coating on the outside.
I sanded a lot of the exterior off and I am in the process of bedlinning the tank.
The pick up tube and sender units cleaned up nice. Sender unit tested having current in all 3 positions so Im putting it back in there.

If you're close enough to Burbank Radiator I would lug your tank over there and let him check it out.

Not to hijqck but this is what the inside of my 86 minitruck looks like.

As u can see the fuel pickup did not fair any better. I got Onur to hook me up with a new one. Your tank looks awefull inside. Still usable though, I think

The inside of that mini truck tank looks awesome. Maybe you meant that instead? But yea the pickup looks terrible.

Yeah @mongoose2231, it looks similar to your tank after it was cleaned. The pictures earlier in the thread are pre-cleaned.

Yes mini truck tank i meant. The fuel pickup was i think, one of the reasons for my terrible gas mileage. I knew something was wrong cause I could see it leak but I thought maybe the rubber gasket was bad. I have no idea how the truck ran so well. I am assuming the truck will be better running now

Great? Yeah...a messed up tank clogs up filters and such rather quick.

@Jasonredwood, I'm in the process of doing a similar tank replacement. My old tank was beyond repair, which I learned after I bought the POR-15 lining kit. If you're interested, I'll make you a helluva deal on that kit! Just shoot me a PM.

Curious what you've found with fuel lines? Did you want / need to go with OEM replacements, or are those hoses generally available at autoparts stores?

I'll PM you. Kinda on the fence about lining the kit. It looks brand new.

I didnt find much in the lines really. I put about 1/3 can of seafoam in the lines, durring the process, and used a compressor to blow them out. The tank was replaced in 95 or so from Toyota and the rubber lines look good. No cracks and all are still pliable. Doubt I'll replace them unless some one suggests that. If I do, I'll probably just pick up some fuel line from the local parts store.

Hey there,
Dropped the fuel tank down today as part of my slow paced project on my 1985 FJ60.
Short story is that it was sitting for 14 years or so in a garage.
Got the carb rebuilt by Mark, drained gas, new fuel filter and now I'd like the opinions of the seasoned FJ60 guys.
Oh and the fuel tank recall was done in 95 or so, cant remember. All the hose came off relatively easy.
Here are the picts

The Sending unit and pickup unit dont look so hot. What do you all think?

And the inside... do I attempt to clean it myself or just take it to a radiator shop to do the deed?

These pictures are super helpful as I'm dealing with a fuel delivery issue myself. Is there not a sock or some kind of screen on the hard line pick up?

There's a mesh "filter" on the end of the pickup / feed tube.

I just had my tank out due to some debris in it...I posted a pic, let me grab it and post or link it here.

Just pulled my tank today. Anyone know what this large thing is inside the tank? Is it supposed to be freely moving ?

Not sure what large thing you’re talking about. There’s a slosh guard that is suppose to help keep the ends of the send and return lines submerged when the truck is bouncing around. It should be welded to the bottom of the tank. Nothing should be moving around in there.

interesting, I definitely have large metal object in there that is moving around, going to get a snake camera and investigate it. My truck is getting frustrating, full of surprises
