interesting, I definitely have large metal object in there that is moving around, going to get a snake camera and investigate it. My truck is getting frustrating, full of surprises
They do have lots of surprises… that’s for sure. Get your VIN number and do an online search for fj60 fuel tank recall and see if your truck had the service done back when they first issued the recall. It is still possible to get Toyota to install a new tank. Otherwise you’ll need to find a new or used tank that’s worth restoring. Welding on a used tank can be very dangerous if not fatal so a lot of welders won’t do it. Especially if there’s any rust on it as fuel can soak into the rust and get released once you add heat. Then… boom… so… do some research and don’t horse around with the tank.

I've called Toyota and they said the recall was done on this tank in the 90's. yea I'm not going to mess with it, thanks for the heads up.

Managed to take a pic with my phone. This piece runs long to the other end of the tank by. Can see it behind the flap where the fuel entry is. No way it would fit through one of the holes. Also that edge looks like it snapped off the tank somewhere.

Yeah, that looks like one of the slosh plates. That thing is toast. Start looking for an other one. A lot of folks go for the long range tank when they get to this point. They’re not cheap, but they offer nearly 40 gallons of capacity.

I wonder, how the hell did that happen???

I had the same thoughts about my hanger. It was amazing it went on for as long as it did. These things are boss hoss, but they require our undivided attention at times. Comes with the territory. But once it’s driving right it’s a lotta fun and you get a lot of attention on the road and trail. Is it worth it? On paper probably not, but in our hearts it certainly is!
