Tried to order all the hardware and seals/gaskets from my local Toyota dealer for my PTO project, and my parts guy says he can only get a few of the washers associated with the mounting bolts? I can source JIS hardware elsewhere if necessary but my main concern is the oil seals. I have seen numerous Mud threads where you guys went and got OEM Toyota seals at the dealer, what is going on? He states warehouse qty on hand = 0, qty on order = 0. The seals are for the winch head, and the pto unit itself. Calling @cruiserdan Save my sinking ship! :frown:

My ship sailed almost 5 years ago when I retired.

Looks like Toyota Parts Deal has them. Unless they don't have live inventory.

Oh, they don't. They "show" everything, on-hand or not.

90311-35004 is still a valid number.

I only have access to older part numbers. Usually when I give my guy old numbers he can immediately give me the updated number. I'm assuming that Toyotas system will flag the old numbers automatically?

Forwarded this to Toyota, confirmed that system auto updates superseded numbers, and these numbers are all DISCONTINUED. I had 29 other part numbers for this project, bolts mostly. The only real winch specific parts were the seals, wire clamp, and a few gaskets.

You need a different dealer. I know off the top of my head 28004 is a readily available, commonly used transmission input seal.

All 3 numbers are still live.

You're probably right. So let me ask, what would one parts guy do differently than the other? They punch a number in and do what the computer says. I don't much care where the parts come from as long as they originate out of J-Pan

That's the difference between a professional and a keyboard operator.
The pros are disappearing because nobody wants to pay for them.

I understand "professional" as in putting in effort to get better results, but I don't understand physically and specifically what it is that one guy can do that another can't. Do you get special parts selling access after a 20 year stint with Toyota? Is there a secret parts system? A magic wand perhaps?

Product and systems knowledge. :meh:

@Braden620

This outfit keeps the parts availability up-to-date. I've only had two or three returned as "NLA" in many orders.

This is what those part numbers cost ( 22 - 24% off list) at this online dealer. Others may have better discounts, but watch out for escalated shipping outweighing the 'savings'.

My understanding having trying to work with local Toyota dealers is that some cannot be bothered with small orders of parts that the customer supplies the part number.

I asked a 'good guy' at a dealer and they have a point, in that the customer comes to get the part they ordered, and the number wasn't right or the part isn't what they wanted. Now the parts guy has to return the part or put it on the shelf, never to be sold.

This good guy got me a mongrel gasket I needed that was on the shelf somewhere outside his regional warehouse, had express delivery and I picked it up two days later at list price of $3 and change.

^this^

At least part of it. Toyota's dealer return policy changed significantly about 6 years ago. Parts costing (dealer cost) less than $8.00 are not returnable. The dealer either eats them or sells them. It may not sound like much but it adds up surprisingly fast.

I have ordered several thousand dollars worth of parts in the last 3 months from the same dealership. Along with supporting chemicals and supplies. I don't just work on one FJ40. I'm with @brian in that this is simple human error and or a lack of knowledge. I generally do no make part number errors as I spend many hours behind this screen with bourbon triple checking everything.
