Retired maybe, but still have your swag! :)
Indeed. Dan knows more 5 years into retirement than current parts "specialists".

I still don't know where the issue is, but it's apparent that the necessary seals ARE available if you try to order them just about anywhere except KY.

I have to disagree with Mark Twain on this one and say that KY is NOT 20 years behind the rest of the world, if they were I could get a whole lot more FJ40 parts from my local dealer. ;)

-71 denotes forklift parts.

That's the difference between a professional and a keyboard operator.
The pros are disappearing because nobody wants to pay for them.

Yep! You go into O'Reilly's and ask for valve cover gaskets for a 1976 350 SBC and the guy asks "manual or automatic transmission?"......., and you want to reach across the counter and slap him.

@Braden620

This outfit keeps the parts availability up-to-date. I've only had two or three returned as "NLA" in many orders.

This is what those part numbers cost ( 22 - 24% off list) at this online dealer. Others may have better discounts, but watch out for escalated shipping outweighing the 'savings'.

Called these guys first thing this morning and they can only get one of the oil seals. I asked them about live inventory and they said "ha ha ha NO". Maybe I just need to get a list of all Toyota dealers nationwide and start calling them. I feel like I'm working on my Datsun again...

I don't recall the significance of -85 as it was rarely encountered and primarily seen on bearings. It may have been a source code for the vendor. 97600-30206-85 was replaced by 97600-30206 which is now discontinued.

-84 indicates remanufactured parts.
-86 indicates parts manufactured to DOT specifications. this is a very old suffix and is rarely encountered today. The only -86 numbers I recall are the FJ40/55 hubcaps.

Great part number tutorial!

So back to the PTO question... although I love watching @Onur and CDan (@cruiserdan) go back and forth!

If I wre looking at rebuilding/refreshing my winch head, what parts/seals should I be sure to get from toyota that I couldn't find in the general market? I am just beginning this process and would love it if anyone could share a list of the must-haves to make this easier.

signed: Just a regular old guy without CDan or Onur's knowledge!

and... @Onur Your sig is for an ENGINE ASSY, PARTIAL 1HD-FTE?

Is the hundy getting an upgrade?

Fellas, it looks like these seals are done for. When the last ones roll off the shelf that's it. I did fiddle with the spiders a bit today. By a little I mean all damned day. I think at this point I'm going to restrain from disassembling any more of the spiders and just keep moly fortified grease in them until they fall apart. I wanted to replace the rubber seals but its not worth the risk of cap damage.

You might try reading this thread PTO Winch Information it has a lot of great info the 395 u joints are a bit snug but they will work

@mrboatman I did some more reading last night. It looks like all the parts numbers for the different PTO shaft spiders have been superseded into one number (04371-36011), thanks Toyota. This has caused chaos in the aftermarket world as we know that there were multiple joint sizes. All of the cross reference systems are combining the older joints in with the newer smaller ones. I don't have any listed dimensions for the newer "smaller" joints but based on my research the only external dimensional difference between the 2 different Toyota joints is in the joint length (cap face to cap face).

Early Joint: 04371-60020 Cap Diameter 20mm, Joint Length 65mm

Late Joint: #? Cap Diameter 20mm, Joint Length 55mm

Post #122... Stock Land Cruiser PTO shaft information needed. - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/stock-land-cruiser-pto-shaft-information-needed.873439/page-7

Moving forward I am just going to clean up my shafts and paint them with the joints installed. I really don't know what else to do. I made a tool to partially disassemble the joint without damage to the soft bronze caps, but to finish disassembly there has to be an axial force applied to at least one of the caps. Doing this bulges the cap outward and will create slop in the joint when operating with an axial load. The inside face of the cap acts as a thrust facing. Even with the old rubber seals damaged, using them as is, getting grease in where possible will provide a decent service life.

I will work on this in the future and reach out to some of the engineers at the various joint manufacturers to come up with a solution.
