Hey guys,

New here so forgive faux pas, or delete the thread if I'm way off-base.

This is an FJ55 I saw in the back of a separate Facebook listing. I asked for more info and got these three pics. It is a 1971, doesn't currently start, apparently rust, dash cracking, ruined upholstery and seals, some wild front bumper rig, and unknown frame rust. Assuming no frame rust (large shades of doubt on that), what would you guys pay for this? Not looking to pursue a full, manicured restoration, but would want it to run very well and would want to repair the rust.

So, is the juice worth the squeeze? What would you guys recommend offering?

Thanks for any info!

Partly depends on where you are and how often they come up. If it turns over, it will likley run. The body rust isn't that bad, not seen too many pigs where the frame is rotten, unless its a coastal pig. I'd keep in mind that the plus or minus 500 you offer at the front will be dwarfed by the restoration time and effort, so ask yourself, do you like the bones, are you a pig guy? If yes, go see him, make him tell you what he wants and undercut by 20%. For me, in Canada, these are rare, that looks like a $3000 pig here, probably 2k USD or less in SC.

Thanks for the reply. A pig is my dream car, so, while never owning one, I'd call myself a pig guy. And I am on the coast, but I think this guy may live just inland enough to have kept the car away from sea spray. But my assumption is always bad, bad rust for cars around here. I think I will go look at it and see for myself, thanks again.

.... and would want to repair the rust.
Depending on your expectations, that could be anywhere from $5k to $50k+ so don't underestimate what that takes before you dive in too deep.

All,

Thanks for your input. I asked him what he had in mind, and he said $8k (🙄).

My instinct was telling me somewhere between $1k-$3k for this guy, and I'm glad that was echoed. I may still go look at it despite the unlikelihood that we strike a deal because these don't pop up around here too often. However, I will likely search elsewhere for my future truck based on your comments. A flight to California seems more sensible than starting a painful relationship with a southeastern modded rust bucket.

Cheers,
Nic

If you love 55’s but have never owned one, you should definitely pass this one in favor of one that’s turn-key.

Add parts shipping cost to the argument that there are not many on the east where you are. I have found over the last 3 years alone, shipping parts for my VERY CLEAN FJ40 added near 20% to the cost of parts… sure, some small ones were $9.00 in a flat rate box but differentials from California to New Jersey and other bigger parts….wow!

There is one that looks to be pretty buttoned up here in Austin that popped up on CL the other day.

Agree w the 1K price for this one but I'd pass too. It would be an incredible amount of work and if you're new to the pig game , this would be a painful start IMHO. I would look for something that's had a bit if work done already so you can at least enjoy it a bit while you do some more of the work. But at 8K, the guy is delusional. My $.02.
