I'm not fretting, just REALLY don't want to tear it all apart. Birfields are just nasty. It's all so nice and neat and done.

So........

Is the 60 hub deeper? If so, I will box these 40 Aisin hubs up and get me some 60 hubs.

I'll put the roaches ass ones from my 60 on Patina and treat my blue pile to a new set of hubs............

Martack takes care of skipping the inner c clip that connects the Birf and the inner axle right?

The "best" solution is not new Birfs because that means I have to tear this bitch apart, kill my rear seal and have grease under my nails for 3 days.

The best solution is hubs that work with my dip**** "long" axles.

(please don't take this as a slight on your offer of a set of birfields Bossman)

This project is working ME as @pmccraney told me tonight.

That is a fact.

It was fun until about last week.

@jrob is coming out wednesday. He didnt even know I had the motor in LOL

This may suck just as much, but you could swap in a 40 front or possibly a 60 front? Seems like a lot of work to avoid changing Birfs but less costly than finding the unicorn "long hubs".

Nolen,

I have the original birfs and shafts from my 6/77 40. Would they work?

If the cap will go on and the dial will operate with the snap ring removed (but with the axle pulled out far enough to put the snap ring on if it would work), then it seems like you've got the right birf/hub body combination.

Is the problem only that the dial will not turn when the snap ring is in place? If so, you might can just grind down the snap ring a bit; we've done that a few times in the past.

Warning: I'm typing this before coffee. Read at your own risk....

Your superpower is "making simple things as difficult as possible." :p

this is a 1978 axle. Install any 76-newer Warn hubs and be done with it. They are not hard to find.

To further ease the difficulty of getting this thing together, install a 74-80 bellhousing to mount the powertrain correctly in the 68 frame.

Boom, done.

or not. Because superpower. :bang:

There. You now have the three options that can make this work properly. They are, in order of ease and cost, 76-newer Warn hubs, shorter birfields, or long body hubs from Mr T.

If you are not in a hurry I will come over and install a set of birfs for you and will not harm your rear seal. It will be a couple of weeks though. I feel responsible for this as this axle came out of one of my parts rigs. Sorry for all the trouble but I can fix this.

Warn hubs it is. Now I can send these $300 hubs back to Beno as a set.

Holy crap.

I really wanted drive flanges for this thing.

Thanks all. I'm sorry y'all had to spend the time on this but I'm really sad I spent so much time on it sitting there on my stool getting pissed losing momentum.

Who wants to trade a set of Aisin hubs with one slightly bent spring under the cap for a set of Warren Hubs?

We've got plenty of hubs Nolen. I've got a set of AVM's (just like warn) if you need em. They came off my 78

Nolen, if your Asins fit my hubs, I'll trade you my Warns.

I too have a set of Warrens if you want them.

WTF?! @beno charged you $300?! Not cool!
