Pretty quiet in here... what are you working on?

BTW, should I have the DS shop swap out new U joints when they retube? There doesn't seem to be much play in them as they are but it seems like now would be the time to do it.

I went out to pull the rear drive shaft off my 80 to get it retubed. Tried, unsuccessfully, for about 5 minutes to get one bolt loose and it was just too damn cold out there today. Those DS bolts are tough. I'm hoping my package from @beno (containing exhaust and O2 sensor gaskets, among other things) arrives tomorrow so I can at least get my exhaust buttoned back up before the storm.

Propane torch! There is usually red loctite on those, and a bunch of corrosion.

So because it was super cold, I was on a time crunch, didn't want to make trips all over for certain tools etc..., and because I was afraid if I cracked the axle open and wasn't happy with a bearing it would all be for nothing, I decided to only do the rotors and brakes today. It was a good choice. Everything went well but it was COLD. I probably wouldn't have finished. I also removed the old tire carrier from underneath. This was after welding class. Ran straight beads with a basic SMAW for 3 hours. LOTS of practice. No fancy mig today! Stick welding is pretty fun. I may pick an inverter up if I can find one cheap. Rods aren't too pricey. Anyway...I'm all ready for the snow with proper brakes! Of course I'll be in a fire engine for the majority of the storm. I have to work Friday from 0600 to 0600 Saturday.

Stick welding is fun!
Glad you got your breaks sorted out.

Got my 80's freshly ceramic coated manifolds and y pipe installed tonight in cold. Went to start her up and no juice. Used the manual switch on my Blue Sea dual battry solinoid and presto, jumped myself. This is the first time I've had to do that so was happy everything worked as expected. Unfortunately I still need to bolt on my slider after a trip to Fastenal for a new frame sized u bolt and an M8 thread chaser for the 4 captured nuts in the frame. I should have definitely left the bolts in the holes over the last couple months. Oh well, live and learn.

So, I completely high centered the '86 4runner. Took some time to dig out and the Temps jumped to just under red. Noticed that there is a pressure leak at the thermostat housing engine side. The radiator was cool to the touch, and
noticed some air escaping from the radiator hose.

I'm thinking three things
  1. Thermostat is bad and not opening (but I think they areally naturally open on most 4runners)
  2. Air is entering the cooling system at the thermostat housing, infiltrating the cooling system, and displacing the coolant in the radiator and creating pockets elsewhere
  3. Possible heat gasket issue (but hoping not)
Does anyone have any insight that are very familiar with the 22re?

So I have to wire up my license plate led. What guage wire do I need? And where should I tap into. I'm going to run it in conduit up the back of the swing arm held by "u" clips and self tappers.
18 gauge is fine. Tap into the tail light/clearance light circuit. If you are mounting it on the swing are you may want to run a ground wire too. The hinges on the swing arm are are not the best conductors.

I believe most thermostats fail closed. There are some that fail open but most do not.

I'm not the sharpest tool in the box but I think there should be teeth in here!! Glad I desided to do some maintenance!
Time to visit Flaming River

Had some time and fair weather to install some cbi offroad ditch light brackets. Also installed and wired some rigid industries d2 hyperspot midnight pods.

They work. I have a fancy switch for the cab to install later. Have to swap the connectors on the harness first.

So far the set up looks solid and not likely to get bumped into.

Also swapped in some piaa driving light bulbs.
Picked up some amazon cheap led flood light pods too, but I need to figure out exactly where I'll install them. Was going to put them in the middle corners of the front bumper angled slightly down.

Received the 22re thermostat from Onur. Might just install that in the morning.

Yikes! Is that a steering ujoint or pitman arm?

Steering ujoint! I went with what I thaught was the standard 3/4 32 spline.
I did more research the scout box I'm useing uses a 3/4 30 spline ujoint. It wore out the ujoint not the box input.

Hope to tear the box down tomorrow and get it taped for Hydro.

Did the West Texas mod to my PS pump. Replaced the GM pulley with a Bushing and Pulley and broke a grade 5 bolt that come with it.
Got my box torn down and dropped off to the machine shop (Rubermaid)

Picked up a Spartan lunchbox locker for the rear of the 4runner. There is a rebate on Yukon parts until March 15 or so. After rebate the locker is just under $200 shipped.

Got a grizzly dial gauge so I can adjust backlash myself now.

Ordered the full Savage offroad 4 piece skid plate set. My delivery guys hate me.
