Sniper start up
did the initial start up on the sniper on Saturday Idle hi. Got the idle down with some tweaking. but my surge tank was leaking too bad to let it warm up and adjust it all the way.
how do you adjust it down or does it just "learn" for itself once it gets up to temperature and driving?

You set the target idle RPM in the ECU and adjust the linkage down then the computer takes it from there. It still idles at 800 RPM’s but I can’t tune it until I get the leaks fixed on my Surge tank. Hopefully have that done today.

Question for the 4runner nerds

Are there any major differences between 3.4l 5sp manual and 3.4l automatic 3rd gen 4runners?

Say...if I bought a 5sp manual 4runner could i then swap over most of my cool guy parts onto said new 4runner? Bumpers, rear axle, ome lift, yada yada yada
Seems all 5sp manual 3rd gen 4runners are 2000 and earlier, so i believe the axles are the same. I think the axles or dif is different in the 2001-2002, but that's from memory. Could be a false memory. Think I currently have a '97

Love my 5sp 3.4l taco...way better than my 4runner auto ever drove.

Balls...looks like rear diff ratio for manual is 4.10 auto is 4.30. So, I'd have to tear into the rear axle and swap everything anyway.

Did you just need a bigger hammer?

I actually had to cut out 3 of 6 bolts. It was weird too, they were completely loose, moving back and forth about an inch but I couldn't pound them past flush with the mounting bracket. Thankfully I bought new hardware with the arms. Just went and picking up pizza in Clifton as a test drive and it's amazing how less squirrelly it is on the road. Looking forward to trying it out on the trails.

My 40 has been hard starting lately so after confirming all my grounds and battery posts were tight I figured it might be the starter going bad. I've heard tons of people vouch for the gear reduction starters off the 60s but apparently there's some extra connections on the 75-78 starters so I kept looking. After doing some research I found a post by @FJ40Jim that the Remy remans on Rockauto were Denso cores and stupid cheap to boot. $38 and 3 days later I have this beauty in and I can't believe the difference. The thing fires right up now. I don't know how much better a GR starter can be. I should have done this a while ago.

For what it's worth, we were chasing down an alternator problem with the help of Ed and in the process ran a ground from the alternator to the frame. Man, what a difference in starting. It turns like it never has.

I assume you mean from the starter to the frame? Mine has this black w/ yellow stripe ground from the lower starter bolt to the frame bolt that holds on a splash guard under the battery. I guess a PO ditched Jack's at some point?

No, he has that ground from the starter. @emorth can explain the reason better than me, but it was not grounding properly. When Jack tried to start his truck, the 12ish gauge ground that ran from the alternator just melted. Running a ground from the alternator to the frame fixed it, and made it much better starting to. And I actually made a mistake--we ran a ground from the alternator to the engine block. On the hanger I think.

I have been kinda busy rebuilding and replacing my tcase
Tcase FUN
