Pretty quiet in here... what are you working on?

Managed to break the driverside door hinge on the trooper while dragging logs around a buddies property. A random spring popped out, a spring not found in the other doors. Door no longer opens /closes as intended.

That is like hyper-extending a knee or elbow. IIRC, I had replaced that door hinge once in the past, for the same reason.

Trooper and Amigo hinges are interchangeable

Is it a knock or is it a valve tick? The 2.6L 4ZE1 is like a Singer sewing machine...the bottom end is pretty stout. But the valves need periodic adjustment, and I was never too good at it. Trial and error, trial and error, to eliminate the tick..tick..tick..

The external dimensions are very similar to the 22R/RE, IIRC.

More like knock.
The 2f and 22re have some distinct valve tick, but the isuzu was always fairly quiet until recently.

Good luck on the search for a Colorado trooper.

I'm thinking a SAS would be pretty cool to do at the same time as an engine swap. Ah, if I only had a garage the kinds of A-Team projects I'd tackle.

Building my list of winter projects for the 40... It just keeps growing and growing and growing...

In order of precedence:
1. Install Poly Performance chromoly rear axles
2. Replace bearing cap assembly on ARB locker that got wallowed out when rear axle broke
3. Stiffen or reengineer skid plate. It is evident that the anti-wrap bar is flexing the skid plate into the parking brake on the t-case.
4. Replace ARB air lines and install updated differential connectors. Air lines are old and the updated connectors eliminate the need for the stupid
ferrule, making it easier to repair the airline into the differential.
5. Repair front DS spring pin (looks to have broken or loosened)
6. Cut down u-bolts to save my bumpstops
7. Rebuild spare power steering gearbox and tap for hydro (future proofing ;))
8. Install rear seat for the girls to ride along
9. Install Burl's on board air design using Cruiser A/C pump
10. Repair rust on front of the hood.
11. Cut tub above sliders and install angle iron. Sliders are flexing and deforming the body along the slider.
12. Straighten bent PS front spring hanger.
13. Remake rear brake lines and install retainers
14. Replace rear brake caliper mounting hardware.
15. Weld differential drain plugs shut. I'm tired of them coming loose.
16. (?) Install Nitro rear aluminum differential cover.

Apparently, wheeling is tough on a truck.

That should keep me busy through the cold winter months.

Good luck on the search for a Colorado trooper.

We're going to take possession of the '88 Trooper (blue, LWB 2-door) I owned from '94 to '99, and sold to my BIL shortly after TJ was born, which he used as a winter truck for a while, and was my nephew's first ride when he started driving. We bought the 4-door you now possess in '99 after TJ was born. :steer:

Stock cam on aftermarket head?

Your Trooper has an AMC brand aftermarket head, with a stock-spec new cam (bought as a new unit in 2005-2006, machined in Woodbridge in 2012? when I R&R'd it).

Stump, the Nitro cover is very nice!

Bart, I hope you got at least .030 stainless wire.

It is a little bling-y, but I am tired of shaving the bolts on my current ruffstuff cover and I like the integrated drain on the Nitro cover and the idea of the recessed bolts. I could probably countersink the lower bolts on my current cover or add a lip to the bottom of the cover as well, but I don't know if that will promote peeling of the cover, though I believe the ring is 3/8" steel and not prone to yield to peeling.

Made a center console from a 20mm shell ammo can. Wired it for power with some goodies inside. Painted up brown. Maybe add a padded arm rest salvaged from a buddie's impreza.

Painted some of KC pencil beams to match the bumper, 'custom' wiring harness made from bits of wire, relay, and switch.
Painted the chrome plastic grill too.

The other day I pretended to be a carpenter and build a rear storage box from some scrap wood. Painted it for looks. This one was just a test. V2 will be cabinet grade with carpet.

pic before paint.

I recently acquired a free ipad3 so now I'll have some version of a carputer with nav. Picked up a bluetooth gps receiver and a locking ram mount for the ipad. That will be tomorrow's project.

Nothing exciting, just replaced the rear brake cylinders and shoes on the 40.....boy that was fun in 30 degree weather! Not sure why I felt I had to get it done while the temps were so low, since with no top on it I'm not likely to drive it until warmer weather. Must be my inner Boy Scout, needing to Be Prepared.

Rear diff swap on sister's 3rd Gen 4runner.
Uber cold this morning.

stock running boards and a spare tire do not make crawling under the truck very enjoyable.

Tried to pull axles out just far enough without disconnecting the brake lines, and even though they disengaged the drive of the differential they still impeded third removal. Waiting till tonight for a hand to bleed those brakes.

Tip#1
Study the gear orientation in the fsm before weightlifting the third under the truck and wondering why it doesn't fit. It never goes in as easily as they come out.

Tip#2
If working in the driveway sweep all the sand and grit away so it doesn't stick to your greasy gloves and inconveniently fall into the corners of your eyes, even while wearing eye-pro. Laying cardboard down is not good enough.
Time to invest in a Bartman green tarp.

Tip#3
do not touch any part of your face to below freezing iron. Almost had a dumb and dumber moment with my chin on the brake drum.

On the drive this morn the red charge light and brake light on the dash popped on and the voltmeter spiked at 20volts.
Drove another 10 min to work and popped the hood to see and smell some smoke coming from the alternator.
Battery still full of electrolyte.
Disconnected the battery then began to internet diagnose the problem.
My guess is that the voltage regulater killed itself in the aftermarket bosch that came with the truck. Maybe something to do with a former small coolant leak onto the alternator.
Short walk to napa produced a reman unit and so began my 2hr battle with the main bottom alternator bolt.
Said bolt inserts from the front and would spin but not thread out with some wiggle.
Had to pry against the head while ratcheting the bolt for about and hour until i had enough clearance to use a small gunsmithing brass hammer and use the kung fu grip to rip the bolt free.
Install took about 3min.
At least the weather was nice today.

Always carry tools in every truck!

Have today off and decided to remove all my winter gear in the 4runner, which led to

pulling up the sides and rear of the soft top.

I had been staring at my bud built skid plate purchased at the last swap meet and had forgotten why it hadn't already been installed .
after unbolting most of the front ARB and strong arming the plate into position I quickly remembered. The skid was slightly wider than what the ARB would allow. After spending a good 30min scouring my basement for my grinder the plate was clearanced and plate painfully bolted on.

as a personal joke I dummy corded the plate on with some toolbox 550cord.

Also replaced a cracked headlight grill housing while I had the tools and paint handy.
