Noob poster here, joined the site in 2016 & have been lurking ever since. I got ahold of an 82 HJ47 and hope to start working on it soon. My understanding is the truck originally had a tray on it hence the different color pickup bed. The cab has been repainted, and in decent condition so I plan to just clean it up and polish it. I love the look of the trucks that have stripped the paint back to original, but I’m afraid of what I might find under there, bare metal etc. (love to hear your thoughts) My main question is what to do with the bed. Looks to be a good bit of bondo in it so I’m thinking I should sand all that out, prime the dents or whatever, and throw some rattle can white on that matches somewhat. I hate to paint the interior of the bed. I feel like I should just rust convert and fluid film or just fluid film and leave the beige that doesn’t match. I know it’s a matter of opinion, but what are your thoughts? Another question is what to clean up the engine with? Will the valve cover, intake, etc clean up with CLR? If you have other suggestions after looking at the pictures, please let me know.

I’d clean it up as best you can and then rattle can the outside bed. I’m not sure I’d do much inside the bed but maybe fluid film if you are set on doing something back there. Then I’d drive it and anything I fixed I’d make sure it stayed on the road as much as possible. By the time you’ve driven it a year or two you will have done lots of little fixes along the way. Then you will know more about what you want it to be.

Oh, you’ll find stuff for sure. 4 years later, I’m still stripping off paint and bondo. My personal goal is to feather some paint back in on the rear sides and anywhere the ‘patina’ is a bit much. I don’t mind some character but I don’t want to overdo it. I’m in no hurry though.
Last (3) pics are from today. First is when I brought it home and this summer.

You're making the right decision to remove all of that. Those rusty starbursts in the first picture are usually the sign of serious rot going on behind the filler. From the second image, I'm actually very surprised you weren't finding more ugliness than you did.

I'm not a paint and body guy, so what kind of primer do I want to use on this?

Also, does anyone know what spray paint is a close match to 1982 033 White?

Clean it down to bare metal and epoxy prime it.

Dupli-Color may still offer 033 in a spray. Most automotive paint stores can custom pack spray paint in any color they have a formula for.

Someone might be interested in preserving this patina. No affilation.

I was going to rust convert and paint the underside of this bed. But now I'm wondering if that's the wrong approach, if i should just FF and let it creep? I get confused on when to convert & paint vs just Fluid film.

Another question is what do i do with these little blisters? I know there's rust under there.

I’d clean that underside real good and rust convert and then FF or paint it

If you don’t want open the exterior paint can of worms fluid film is your best bet there.

Thanks! So I assume I would need to open up those little paint blisters with an awl or a dremel tool or something to get the oil to them? you have to look real close, the paint is blistered between the rust spots.

It’s a tough call on that. I for sure would not grind it out.

Will this truck live inside from here on out or be outside?
