I'm thinking more and more that this is the way to go. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0o1zkqEuec and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OovlaEEK3RA
If you were to leave the lower hard buttons (just below the screen) in place, 90% of the climate control is accessible. The only thing I hate, is that the a/c is enabled every time you hit auto, and I would prefer a hard button for that. But....I haven't taken the dash apart, but my question would be whether or not the factory screen can be "recessed" into the dash a bit more. You could then build a holder of some sort for the tablet, maybe even with the ability to flip the tablet up out of the way so you could access the factory controls every now and then. With the android, you can use it for all your music, video, backup cameras, and even the diagnostic tool.

This wouldn't help, but I installed this in my 2000 and it mirror my rooted android

FYI, I also received a Paypal payment of $175 from CruiserOps today. I contributed funds knowing full well that the project might never come to fruition. No matter the outcome, I never expected a refund. When you invest in something of this nature, it is always a gamble and to be honest, I am surprised I received the payment. The money people threw in was basically VC. You think it is a good idea, you believe in the people managing the project and you like the odds of it becoming a workable solution. No where is it guaranteed that you will see a return on your investment.

Rob is a stand-up guy and he deserves that you carefully consider your words if you are going to post something negative in this thread.

I have contributed before to kickstarter.com like projects and getting a refund isn't likely or even the norm. What Rob is doing is pretty awesome. I think something like >50% of projects fail and you get nothing (it's really up to the fundraiser). http://mashable.com/2012/06/21/more-than-half-of-kickstarter-projects-fail-does-it-matter/ http://www.kickstarter.com/blog/accountability-on-kickstarter
http://www.npr.org/blogs/alltechcon...mpaign-fails-does-anyone-get-their-money-back

It's even cooler that Rob is going to open it up so folks can try and continue the work.

Side note, I saw that a TV show Veronica Mars got like or will get 2.5 million dollars to make a movie based on the show. The studio that owns it, felt that there wasn't that much interest to warrant a movie, despite the cult following. But this is changing their minds and might help with a better budget. I wonder if research at academic institutions is going to need to resort to something like this with gov budget cuts looming.

I gotta say, that's a pretty honorable choice that RobRed has made. While not fully successful, he invested a ton of hours and advanced the ball quite a ways toward the goal line. I truly respect all of the hard work that went into this endeavor. Hopefully now someone else will have the time, energy, or resources to build upon the solid foundation that Rob has laid. Doubt you'd see this kind of quality response on any other forum.

Rob is a stand up dude and has put a ton of time in this. I know I pestered him a lot as I want to be freed from the nav system. Lets appreciate Robs efforts and take it forward.

I was really hoping this project would come to fruition. I completely understand the lack of time and unhelpful and expensive third party vendors. I did not ever expect my initial buy-in back. Very stand up move!

Hopefully the info will be released so that we can try to sort out how to proceed with the next steps...

If the connector modules are the issue, why can't we just jump pin to pin? I was under the impression that pin to pin mapping was complete (at least for the pre-2003s). Give me a schematic of the pin-outs from from an '02 MFD and a standard non-nav center console and tell me that pin 1MFD goes to pin 16NN and I have no problem doing this on a Saturday afternoon.

Here is an example of the pin connectors i'm thinking about:

Let me know if you need help. I can get a box of AMP pins and some shrink wrap. I would be happy to help solder/pin them.

I haven't posted in this thread since November 2011, which was the same month I kicked in $175 for this project. After I sent the funds I sent a PM to RobRed to confirm receipt and never got a response. If I hadn't subscribed to this thread I probably would have forgot about it.

That said, I never asked for a refund, but got one anyway. What I did expect was a basic level of communication. Every week or two someone posts about an update and nothing. Last month we were promised a big update from Rob and then a big fat nothing. I understand this is a big project, but I didn't ask him to take it on. He did that and solicited crowd funding, which I fully supported. If he had simply provided periodic updates to the project I'm sure we wouldn't be where we are.

I think it is a bit passive agressive to just start refunding money without addressing it in this thread. He shouldn't have to absorb his cost incurred to date. I'm more than happy to cover my share.

/end rant

Is anybody taking bets on if the knowledge base will be disseminated?

Odd thing to say when the guy just refunded everyone's money that paid in. Not to mention the fact that he took a personal loss for a project he didn't even own a car that could benefit from it.

Were you a paying contributor?

No I wasn't.

But this thread was sidetracked on 07-05-11, 08:31 PM when Rob came in and started a commercial venture here. There wasn't much going on here independently since then.

Because there has not been anything usable stated about this for a year now(not even an update), I think it is reasonable to be skeptical that info will be forthcoming.

I would have paid him for a product had it come to fruition.

I offered to help him source connectors in China. I know a manufacturer there who "might" have been able to help.

I have an interest here for the same reason everyone else does.

He guys - very sorry for my absence but as much as I love you guys my work life that pays for all these toys has taken some precedence. Family first.

Les did offer to help.

As commercial ventures go this was never a for profit concept. I have no interest being in the Land Cruiser accessories business. In fact I only became interested because of discussions with Paul and the subsequent encouragement from him.

Any of the data I collected, there is a fair amount, will be given freely. None of it is proprietary. If some one wants to take a shot at it I would give 100% support.

Much of the information I have that would likely be helpful is hand written notes and diagrams. In the coming weeks I'm going to figure out how to make that available via web and anyone can have it.

I wish I could have made it work for you guys. I mentioned on the blog the why's and why not's

We appreciate the effort you put forth Rob.

On a different note... are you ready to hit some trails or what? :)
