Hope that Rob is doing progress, as my Land cruiser 2001 Navi is useless. Will any donation help, or is it other problems ?

Installing Aftermarket Navigation Into 2002 UZJ100 With Factory Nav Unit

I had a customer bring in a 2002 UZJ100 with factory Nav to install a Kenwood Double Din Navigation unit. We are building the rig to do a year long Journey to from Southern California to Argentina- stopping every where along the way. It was imperative to the owner to have this unit installed as he is using 3rd party vendors for mapping for each country he is traveling through.
So far the Kenwood is installed and functioning flawlessly both audio and navigation wise. By tomorrow we will be finishing up the relocation of the A/C controls (MFD). Since the customers main consideration was the the functions of the Kenwood navigation unit, and not of the location of the A/C controls- we went that route. I will update pictures to the thread as soon as we are done. Wish me luck on this as I am already 10 hours into the swap... many wires, soldering, and shrink wrapping.

Thanx for the info.

Anyway you would be able to provide some type of migration path for the rest of us?

Because this thread is dead Zed!

It would be so nice to have an alternative to the integrated factory NAV/HVAC in my '05, which makes an otherwise terrific SUV feel like it's ancient.........

Anyone heard from Rob lately?

Very interested......nice work! Did you happen to document your way through it? Many on here would LOVE to know.

The above conversion is leaving the MFD wired but relocated. I have seen a couple installs like this. The audio connectivity is actually pretty minor.

Regarding our complete conversion project I will have a long overdue update for everyone this weekend. There is a lot to cover. I will ping this thread.

Excellent!

Slightly related- I just stopped in at Car Toys in Boulder, CO and asked what kind of solutions they had for working with the factory NAV in an 03. He says, " NAV-TV makes an interface module to add another video source, and ??? makes a module to add ipod and phone connectivity, but some guy was just in here last month that replaced the whole center section with parts from Japan so he could put in an aftermarket system." Of course, I about fell over....turns out he did do that, new sub harness, new faceplates, new buttons, some new control modules, etc. Car Toys called me up and said it was still there and I could come look at it......but it wasn't a 100, it turned out it was GX470. Doh! Had me all worked up and excited. I have seen a few GX's around with no nav, so I wasn't that surprised....but the stereo tech said it was all plug and play, no big deal. He also said he didn't pull the whole dash, that there was just a sub harness behind the center section that had to get changed out.

So given that, it seems like the sub harness is pretty key. Makes me wonder if the connector source that Coolerman had can produce connectors for the 100's as well. If that's the case, one of the most expensive components to replace might be a tick cheaper.

I read through most of this thread, but I'm not sure if I ever caught you mentioning if the connectors were the same for nav/non-nav. IF the connectors are the same, and there are just some wiring differences, then maybe it's workable. If there are new connectors, then back to spendy factory sub harness.

Interested to hear your updates on your progress and especially for the 03.

If I have a 2000 with 3 knob AC and no nav, And I bought a 2001 with the NAV, how hard would it be to swap everything?

Although it seems like a straight forward swap (which was my thinking too initially when the LC I bought came with the Nav) it is a huge project. If I have interpreted this thread correctly, there is no real common ground in the two systems, as they are operated and wired completely differently. An example is that Toyota engineers actually integrated HVAC components (I think the condenser) into the tape deck of the GPS. What Brock and the others are doing is essentially reverse engineering the GPS to re-adapt it to the manual hvac system. I hold little hope of this being a DIY the majority of us are gong to be able to perform, but I applaud their efforts!

Pwcummings is right. That's what I found about that too. I ended up just keeping the stock console and installing a us-spec blue tooth interface to stream from my Android device. Doesn't sound that good but better then nothing.

What would be nice is to have direct usb and rca input. I have a 2003 which the vaistech doesn't work. .. bummer
