Been a bit fascinated by the asking prices of pigs recently on Craigslist and EvilBay. Wanna thank SHMac again for posting the 55's he's been finding online and posting them in the classified section. It's been quite interesting to see what sellers think their stuff is worth and what the "market value" is considered to be.
These rigs ARE rare, how rare and what to compare to I think need to be a little more clarified.
Some sellers have gone as far as to claim that the market value for them is between 40k - 50k. I understand that depends upon many factors. Really it's supply and demand and how much someone is willing to pay. Anything beyond that is speculative.
Anyways, I'm starting the RUSH scale.
This isn't really to dictate a price. People can pay whatever they want. All I really want to do is set a baseline that can't really be done with Kelly Bluebook.
The scale is on a 1 to 10 - 1 being just above a parts rig and a 10 being showroom immaculate or better.
The 10s of course would fetch top dollar, whatever that would tend to be.

I'll start with mine, just to be fair. I have a lot of pics on a thread I started, "There And Back Again..." if anyone wants to see. Without a lengthy description and analysis, it gets a 2.5.

While mine is technically two pigs in one or at least that's how it started it may not be in immaculate shape and there is plenty of rust to go around I will rate mine at a 1.5. Lots of rust to go around but in the scheme of things it holds together and pretty solid just gotta get it on the road and continue to get the panels fixed one at a time.

I've had mine for only 6-7 months. I think it looks good but it's far from a rotisserie restoration. I've attached a few pics of my rig below. Also, here is a link to an FJ40 that my friends at FJ Company just sold three days ago at RM Sotheby's for $88k. It's about as amazing as it gets. I only am speaking about it as a reference to what a 10 would look like.

That 40 is absolutely a 10+. Showroom floor immaculate or better. It would be the equivalent of opening a portal to 1976 and driving it from the dealer showroom and into your present driveway.
Another factor you always gotta wonder about is how much of a loss they took in the sale, because face it, you'll almost never get out of any vehicle what you put into it. Somewhere you take a hit either in labor or replacing parts that it would have needed to be on there to even consider selling anyway.

Not sure how mine would rank, but I just got finished with a long and frustrating interaction with a big insurance company after a kid ran over my DD.

Long story short, major insurance company kept giving me very crappy valuations on my DD. Every time I pushed back, the value went up, but I kept telling them they were not giving me correct value for my car. My car was not very complex - 1994 Honda Civic Si w/ an engine swap from an Integra (B18C1). After 3 tries, and 3 different representatives, they said they would have to farm out the valuation to an outside appraiser. I told them that sounded good if my 21 year old was giving them that much difficulty. The independent appraiser came back with what I felt was a fair value. It was 3x the first valuation the insurance company tried to slip me. This valuation made the difference between a Total Loss and Repairable for my car.

I say this because I think I will ask this appraiser to value my Pig, and my 40 at the same time. I have Agreed Value insurance on the Pig, but I wonder if I have the value set too low? I should be finishing my 40 in the next few months, so I will need some decent insurance on it as well.

Thanks for the encouragement. I have not been sure whether I am being helpful or annoying. I started out just being curious about what 55s are worth. Then I decided to post the listings for general information. Now, I am trying to keep track of the listings. I will keep it up until I think that I have enough information to draw some conclusions, or just get bored or discouraged. It has been pointed out and I agree that the analysis is significantly handicapped by not being able to determine the actual selling price (in most cases), but I don't intend to contact each of the sellers to find out what the trucks sold for.

Here are my 2 Pigs :pig::pig:. The one on the left is a '79 (mostly original and a 6 on the RUSH55 scale) and the other is a '71 (original with the factory PTO winch and a 2 on the RUSH55 scale). I paid $8,200 for the pair in December. Both run but neither one is on the road yet. They are currently residing at Trollhole's Cruisers where they are receiving much needed attention.

Hahahaha!! That is awesome!! The RUSH rating system is catching on already! Great team effort, SHMac - you keep posting them and we will keep rating them, and we can all see if the sellers are right on or out of their gourds!

As requested..

I was looking a flipping some C-10 pickups awhile back and started out looking at what the pickups where listed for on the internet just like you are doing now. What I found is somewhat of an un-orchestrated dance between guys listing trucks for bat $hit crazy prices and siting on them for an untold amount of time driving the perceived price up. Then I starting looking at what the pickups that actually “sold” where going for and found a huge gap making flipping C-10 pickups quite a bit less profitable then it would appear to the casual observer.

I believe that 55’s fall into their own category but the practice of chumming the water seems just as prevalent with them.

You can add these to your list, recent EBay completed listings,

Sold for something less than $23,000, Toyota : Other Original

Sold for $14,900, Toyota : Land Cruiser Base Sport Utility 4-Door

Did not sell for $8,500, Toyota : Land Cruiser Fj55

Sold for less than $5,500, Toyota : Land Cruiser FJ55

Sold for $2,000, Toyota : Land Cruiser Basic

I believe you will see the values slowly increase. If an investor can't find a 40 or 45 for sale they will lean to the 55. Highest I have seen on eBay w as s 40,000 +. Sold by one of the guys on here jq11 I think. Heck if factory mirrors are selling for overall 3gs. Something will change. All my :pig::pig::pig:s are a 10. On the fun scale:cheers:

Mine never had a totally complete interior, (or exterior either )

Thus, I sold a lot of Pig-specific things (my 69 grille and a lot of interior pieces)off my pig since it's going to end up (hopefully) as a reliable, but well-used trail rig.....I guess that makes it in the 2's. But it's less rusty than the few other pigs i've seen around Montana.

this was the last time mine ran/drove....Oct 2014

Two TLC restored 55s have sold for more than $75k. I am trying to track down the sales prices. Here are links to the trucks.

Toyota 4x4 Land Cruisers

Toyota 4x4 Land Cruisers

Both of those are absolutely beautiful and top notch workmanship with serious attention to detail, except for one thing....both have rusty/dirty master cylinder - brake boosters! WTF is up with that? Thousands upon thousands in upgrading ever possible facet, and this eyesore gets looked over? Really?
They would have both been 10's, but because of the overlooking of this critical detail, they both score a 9.9.

My work in progress...would put it as a 4 but with potential to slowly climb the scale. As with all Land Cruisers, these will climb in value over time...because they are classic, old Toyota's. Clean FJ40's are getting stupid money, and the 60's are climbing in value. Give it time and the 55's will take off.
