Asco hubs are from '79-80 trucks and have a blue dial, while the Aisins we're all more familiar with have the red dial. So, looks/sounds like you've got an early axle and both hub styles.
Why couldn't the 4runner master be used with its own booster? Better and more available than a 60 series master.

Hey I like that better. And I believe the 4runners also had discs in the front and drums in the rear correct? So the valve setup on the master should be good to go. (Other than picking up a check valve for the power booster.

Thanks GASHOG.

Correct, the year span of the 4Runners mentioned all came with disc/drum in front/back. There may be a difference in the 4cyl and 6cyl booster/master specs. I'd consider a used booster but definitely go with a new master, FWIW. Your concerns with this setup might be spacing in the engine compartment and correct push rod length. Maybe someone with experience will chime in.

a mid 80s to 1994 forerunner brake booster will work great...it'll need to be turned upside down, have a 1/4-3/8" cut off of the push rod that ties to the brake pedal arm, and a check valve from same year vehicle must also be used. they tend to be thinner than the stock FJ55 boosters, cheaper, AVAILABLE, and also boost more power...

Thanks Gashog. Yeah Lambcrusher nailed that one and should be an easy fix to adapt to my 55.
Appreciate all the info everyone!!!!

30 YO toyota parts will last longer than 0 YO kragens parts...keep your eyes open on MUD, pirate, marlin and craigslist. you should find a DECENT condition axle for 4 bills if you ask me. many times, there are guys selling the outers and inners of disk brake axles- you just have to be ready to jump on it. Prolly find what you need for about 3-4 hundo, then get a knuckle kit with wheel bearings and some marlin inner seals and get to work. total cost about 850 if George rebuilds the diff too; providing you supply the rest of the elbow grease. that'll get you a fully rebuilt disk brake front axle including rebuilt diff...HTH

You nailed the price on the complete axle. Got mine for 350.00.
Thanks!!

Starting the tear down of the donor axle... Got the Scout steering box in place and even without the power steering pump installed, (Will be shortly) it wheels MUCH better than before. (The old manual box was already in bad shape which I already knew when I bought it-So was already on my list of fix it's)
Going with the 4Runner master set up and Marlin service kit with the mini axle parts. Will include pictures as I brake (pun intended) stuff down.

Yes Birfs-hubs-brakes-Axle shafts... Once I have them broken down and assessed, I will sell the front axle housing and steering linkage for a hundred bucks or so to a local gal/guy that can pick it up. I will update the discs of course, but for now want to get it all in place so that I can rough out the new brake lines and adapters to get from 10mm to 9mm on the rear drums...
Thanks 89GASHOG and I will be including images as I break (oops-bad word choice!!) I mean tear down and rebuild my new front end.

A few start images of the mini truck axle tear down. Looks like someone used a hammer and flat blade to tighten the wheel nut once or twice. Hopefully it was just a emergency repair. Note the little bits of wire holding the pins in place on the calps... No big deal as I plan to chuck those and go with a V-6 calipers IF they will fit.
Do most of you keep the mini truck steering arms and fit is good on the 55's??

Using a Tofurky foil bin to keep all my parts together and separate off each end. GLAD the hub was easy to pop off the single disc rotor...
Going with a new duel rotor that should stop my moose with ease.

What year was that axle off of? Just never seen that double steering arm, all the ones I've seen are like the 60 series. Regardless - you need a pair of "large pattern" steering arms, if you find them from a 40 you can just run them ... if off a 60 you need the tapered bushings SOR sells to fit your TREs.

Looking good!

Tucker

Thanks Tucker74,
The donor axle was supposed to be off a 79-85 mini truck. Man I sure hope that's what it was...
The steering arms that fit on both knuckles correct?? I was under the impression that all those dropped into place on the 55's with the donor knuckles. Eek I better back track and figure out where I'm missing parts. (That's a biggie!!)

Hopefully the mini truck knuckles will be ok unless the axle was not what I was sold. (Well my fault on that)
Thanks for the heads up!!

Thanks for the heads up!!

There are different size tie rod ends between 40/55 vs. 60, vs. mini-truck. I can never keep track of what they are, but I think there is a cheat sheet out there...

Ok. Having trouble removing the short side axle from the birf.
I given it a dozen + good drops on a PVC pipe. Also 6 hard whacks on a steel 2x2 channel.
No luck.

I don't want to damage the joint, but need to install my inner axle from my 55 swap.
Any ideas??? Thanks all!

Sometimes it takes some serious drops on a steel pipe to break the axles loose. I usually comes apart about the time you think something is going to break.

Getting ready for my disc brake swap on my 55. Got my new rotors and painting up housings-hubs-arms... Yeah not necessary but everything was pretty rusty and cruddy looking.
On the steel parts, I did a 5 day soak in red cider vinegar and cleaned up with a light scrubbing to get the final rust off. primed and about 7-8 thin coats of a single part polyurethane. Even if the paint gets marked up, hopefully these parts will be around anther 40 years.

minis were red....fj60s were gold

and i believe the ascos came around mid 70s on the piggies

Long-body ASCOs went with the long-body birfs on '76-78 Piggies and had a silver dial.
Not sure what the Piggies got for '79 when they went with the shorter birfs...
