A vise grips on the splined shaft makes a great steering wheel, for the thief who has one. Just say'n

For all that work, I'd put in a kill switch, also. The more obstacles the better!

X2 on above. I'd also be concerned about excess wear on the splines, or somehow not having a tight wheel, by taking it off/on over and over. Find a good hiding spot for a kill switch. For the brakes, again JTO outfitters sells a conversion kit for front discs that would not require mods, or sourcing other axles.

COST of a Mini 79-85 front axle Complete

Howdy all,

So I am setting up for a mini truck front axle swap on my 1969 -55 and want to know the rough going price for a 79-85 complete front axle??? I have seen prices in the 350-400 range for well used but otherwise complete axles. :meh: :meh:

Is that fair? Or am I better off hitting Kragen for most of the parts and finding axles/birfs on ebay??

Thanks and Happy New Year!

Peter

30 YO toyota parts will last longer than 0 YO kragens parts...keep your eyes open on MUD, pirate, marlin and craigslist. you should find a DECENT condition axle for 4 bills if you ask me. many times, there are guys selling the outers and inners of disk brake axles- you just have to be ready to jump on it. Prolly find what you need for about 3-4 hundo, then get a knuckle kit with wheel bearings and some marlin inner seals and get to work. total cost about 850 if George rebuilds the diff too; providing you supply the rest of the elbow grease. that'll get you a fully rebuilt disk brake front axle including rebuilt diff...HTH

Thanks LC!!
Great info and I have a line on a axle already I am going to check out this weekend. Will let you know what I pick up. If I get it, will for sure get the Marlin inner seal and the rebuild kit from a good source. Using a new FJ80 master and hopefully I can get a booster to fit in the space as it may hit the carb on the F2.

Thanks again LAMBCRUSHER!!

My 55 has the 60 series disc brake/knuckle upgrade, which does a great job of stopping the truck.

When doing the conversion, the rotors, lines, pads and calipers are should be inspected carefully. The general consensus is to consider them as cores and replace with new.

Thanks Mel for the info...

I remember that post but forgot about the brake info you had on there. (With great photo's too!)
Yeah I certainly will be trading those pieces out. And I am getting the zinc coated/vented rotors to go on the mini as well. I should have the steering conversion done by mid January and then I will be diving into the brakes.
Thanks again Mel

a mid 80s to 1994 forerunner brake booster will work great...it'll need to be turned upside down, have a 1/4-3/8" cut off of the push rod that ties to the brake pedal arm, and a check valve from same year vehicle must also be used. they tend to be thinner than the stock FJ55 boosters, cheaper, AVAILABLE, and also boost more power...

That info is GOLD. Very much appreciated. Is the check valve located inline with the vacuum line to the motor??
Will make sure to order that as well.

Huge thanks again!

Here is a pic of a 4 runner/mini truck booster I put on a 1970 40, in conjunction with 60 series master and 60 series front disc brakes. It stops great. Autozone sells the booster for $129

Jinkees, how was there room in there for the big fat 40 booster back in the day?

I paid 35 bux for a used booster from the recyclers, which included the firewall spacer...the check valve is indeed in-line of the vacuum line to the manifold- and it is divorced from the booster- the earlier cruisers check valves fit into a grommet in the booster itself...
I was quoted 40 bux for the valve from the recyclers, skipped on it, and found one from a part out rig I saw down the road from my house. That guy wanted 10 bux for it. 129 new from autozone is temping; maybe I'll try that one once this runner booster goes- whenever that may be...

Hey thanks again all. I know the info here will make this swap a breeze. :D
So here is my start list for parts on the 55:

[STRIKE]79-85 mini axle complete. (with preference to the 83-85 years)[/STRIKE]DONE
[STRIKE]Upgrade brake calipers and rotors. [/STRIKE]DONE
Marlin rebuild kit with inner seal
4Runner 80's-94 brake booster
4Runner brake master pump
9mm to 10mm adapter for rear brake lines (if there's a better way??)
Hitting Napa for lines and fittings.

My list so far....

I know I can source random parts like birfs/knuckles/spindle ect... off Ebay, but miss out on the other smaller parts like the fasteners, cone shaped spacers, washers and the rest....

Changing out my tabs a few months ago I decided to see if I could "un-earth" the oldest tab...
Well got back to 1969! I think I posted this someplace but thought I would put up on my fix it page.

Picked up a great axle for my brake swap

Picked a Toyota 4WD axle for my brake swap. This has the asco hubs and looks to be in good shape. I should have the steering swap done by the end of the month, so will be gathering the rest of the parts between now and then.
Even got some extra brakes and 2 newer red asco hubs from the really cool seller.

Per the suggestions above, will also get the 80's to '94 booster and a 60 series master if that can be picked up new/re-conditioned. I think the valves should already be set up for discs in front and drums in the rear.

Asco hubs are from '79-80 trucks and have a blue dial, while the Aisins we're all more familiar with have the red dial. So, looks/sounds like you've got an early axle and both hub styles.
Why couldn't the 4runner master be used with its own booster? Better and more available than a 60 series master.
