I found my FSM for the 97 4Runner on eBay for maybe $60. I don't think it was ever opened. I'd say it's quite the comprehensive document!

Ditto! Mine was opened but its in decent shape. I keep it in anticipation of a 3.4 transplant (never throw anything away). @pappy if you want to borrow this let me know, if the 97 is relevant.

I just ordered the 1998 two volume set for the 4Runner (reprint, actually). The problem with the 1997 is the wiring is all wrong. For some reason Toyota change the harness 1997 to 1998. Even the OBDII connector was wired different, something I thought would be consistent.

Your 1985 book is way too pretty. Mine is beat up.

Bling, bling, bling. T100 oil pan. 4Runner and Tacoma are front sump and would hit my front diff. T100 pan is rear sump.

4Runner is running. The only observation I'm making at this time is the LCE camshaft is not what I was hoping for. Even though it's supposed to be a street cam, it does have a noticeable lope at idle, and it pulls less vacuum than my DOA C270. It does pretty good on the freeway, but is not as friendly around town as I would like.

Congrats! Even though the new cam is not quite all you were expecting, at least the truck is running while you work on the new powerplant!

Yep. I took the truck out to 9-Mile Hill. It does fine on the freeway, and is very happy above 3600 rpm. It will do just dandy for now. I will burn this tank off, then readjust the valves.

A step in the right direction.

Boy this has been a slow process. A 2003 Tacoma showed up at the u-pull yesterday, so today I went for a look. 2RZ. But, it had the three pulleys I needed, plus a few little things. It also had the power steering pulley I needed, but I forgot my puller and couldn't get it off. Saturday I will go get it along with the AC compressor.

I also pulled the starter, but it wasn't a Denso, so I left it. Those things are a boich to get out.

Both crank accessory pulleys, and the fan/water pump pulley.

Baby steps....

I agree with Chompers - one step at a time. You've been here before with your 2-FE build for the 40, and you've already got the big pieces. Now just to find all the little bits to make it happen.

I'm just glad I found these at the u-pull. They were $11 each instead of the stupid money Toyota wanted.

A little boneyard visit today.

They had a T100 with a 3RZ. Even though I had already bought the oil pan stuff from Toyota, I decided I wasn't going to let this stuff get crushed. But ... long story short ... after getting out all the bolts, and starting to remove the cross-member so it would drop down ... it had a f'n hole in the pan with a goofy rubber plug. I left it.

They also had a 2001 Taco 2RZ that dropped yesterday. I decided to grab the alternator. 1995-2000 was 70A, and 2000+ was 80A. Of course I had the brackets and adjuster for the 70A. The 80A fit the lower 70A bracket, but the 70A adjuster was all wrong. I tried to get the adjuster out of the Taco, but I couldn't get the bolt to crack loose with one hand. The other hand was holding up the crinkled hood. I'm going back tomorrow with bigger tools and grab both the lower mount and the adjuster.

Oh, I forgot. It was a Denso reman which is why I decided to grab it. After getting the alternator home I popped off the back cover and pulled out the brushes to see how worn they were. I think the pic says it all. I scored a nice Denso! Now I just need to make it fit.

Much better. 80A alternator on the engine.

Picked up new brushes for the alternator. New length is 10mm. Currently length is 6.6mm. Installed new set. Will stash old set in the oh-crap box.

A solution in search of a problem?

Well, probably not. I have four relays and two aux fuse blocks under the hood. I need to add one more relay. Once I get the engine out I'm going to redo the non-factory wiring. The switched fuse block, and all the relays, will go into this.

Technically, the engine is 5 years old. It's the cylinder head that I had to replace this last winter. But ya, that 3RZ is going to be sweet.

Ahhh, gotcha. I thought you'd swapped this engine out already.

A little wrinkle. From Marlin Crawler:

"Jon, we are out of the 2TR Bellhousing kit. It will be 3-4 months before we receive more."
