So I’ve painted a few cruisers and been doing this on and off since high school in the 80’s. I’ve had this 60 for a few years. It’s an original TX truck coming to San Marcos via Victoria most of its life. It has a few small rust spots I’ll correct. Mostly around the plugs left behind after some type of distributor or dealer rust protection. And I have to rebuild part of the lip that holds the body gasket on the rear of the truck. I’ve been prepping this 60 for the mother of my children and was originally doing mechanicals and interior. Decided yesterday that I could not deliver this to her in CO with the original faded patina look. Especially as I studied the minor rust issues. Yesterday and today I gutted and demoed the truck. I shoot in my barn with minimal ventilation (I use my 36” Porto-cool fan) so I will paint it in 3 stages. First will be the tub, then the front clip and then the doors. I removed all the glass except the door glass as I did not want to remove the chrome on them. That’s getting deeper than I have time for right now. Also have some older body work in the drivers rear quarter I have to redo as well as a few door dings and one dent in the passenger rocker. What I’m excited about is shooting Metallic. I’ve done some spot metallic spot jobs but never a whole vehicle. Here’s a few shots of the truck. I’ll use this thread to document my work. I will be the first to say I’m no where near the skill of Others I/we follow here on MUD. Just an average paint and body guy enjoying another build :).

I look forward to getting to this point with my 60.
It will be the first time I've cared about a good paint job since high school.

Shooting in the barn, limited ventilation, several cruisers. Explains the Jimmy we know and love. He loves reducer evaporation as well (wafting in the vapors 😊) He has helped me and @SipLife paint a 67 Mustang. He is a paint OG.

Nice work, Jimmy. I'll be following. One of my favourite colours for a 60....
Thank you Ken. You need to join Pete for a trip south. I have plenty of room for the two of you.

@CenTXFJ60 You’re awful kind to be fixing up a truck for your ex-wife. I can’t imagine a world where mine would be interested in Cruisers.

I know. Seems a bit unusual. Her father is the one that started our love of cruisers so she’s been around them a long time. Plus, she could have demanded many more of them instead of just one.

Welded up the rear lip that the gasket attaches to. Also cleaned out the rain gutter and letting it soak with OSPHO. Out of town this week for work so I’ll get back on it towards the end of this week. Hope to get the seam sealer on the gutters and the rear lip of the tub. Also hope to fix the dent in the rocker and quarter panel. I did pull the wiper arms and vacuumed put a ton of leaves and debris.

Got home this afternoon from a work trip all week. Just finished seam sealing the rain gutters as well as the rear gasket lip that I fixed last weekend. Did not take pics but will grab some tomorrow. Forgot how tedious that job is.

What product did you use for the gutter? I’m going to be doing that soon and have heard several different things.
Here’s what I’ve used the last few times. I’ve used the 3m product as well but like this one better. Takes longer to set up and it’s not sticky at the point of dispensing. This allows me to work it similar to caulk. I buy it from my local paint wholesaler.

Dam…it’s always worse than you think it’s going to be. Cleaned off some cracking bondo and found a few holes. Taking donor metal off my Euro 61 (the tub is toast and I have a dry 62 tub to replace it). Will go fat so I can weld on flatter surfaces. Welding is not my best skill so I need to ensure I can get to it with a grinding pad.

Shutting down for the evening. Harvested the sheet metal from the donor. I should have made a template to use on both trucks. Would have saved me a lot of time fitting the donor piece to the truck. I’ll start tacking manana. Loaded some .23 wire in the mig. Never used this small of wire, but should make my life a bit easier.

Looking Good Jimmy!
Do you have a plasma cutter or just using a right angle grinder to cut out the sections?

Thank you Mike. I use the angle grinder with a metal cut off blade. Learn as I go. As I mentioned, hindsight tells me I should have made a template. I spent hours grinding the body and the patch panel getting it it fit. Have to do a bit more figment work tomorrow and hopefully get it welded up.

Finished the fitment of the patch. Welded up and put one skim coat of body filler. Took my time and made several passes with the welder. First time using 23g wire and turned the heat way down. Very few burn throughs. Will knock it down later and keep fine tuning it

Took a break the last week or so. Went to Fort Collins to spend some time with my boys. Home today and hitting it a bit after work. Used this old tool I’ve had for decades to pull a 3/4” deep dent in the rocker. Few coats of body filler and it should be good
