Live from the Long Island leg...

So we had a BEAUTIFUL day weather-wise. 10 trucks participated overall with a couple joining and leaving along the way... superb!

Long Island is certainly not as majestic as what Hector toured on the first leg but we ran through some nice spots and had a great time meeting some new cruiser heads and getting a lot of attention from the public along the way. 40s ranged from close to bone stock, restored to perfection, resto-modded and beast rock crawlers. We even had an Aussie troopie/camper conversion join us for a bit.

First destination: Grumman Memorial Park... atypically closed so we improvised out front.

Next up: the Big Duck in Flanders, NY.

Yeah, it's big... there is a gift shop inside.

Second stop was the Shrine of the Lady of the Island... not a lot of people know about this one... it looks out to the ocean off to the south of Long Island.

And lest we forget it is Saturday rather than Sunday.... a roadside "attraction" we prudently skipped today. (We are in Suffolk County by the way)

After battling much traffic along the south shore of the Island we eventually made our way over towards Robert Moses State park. This is on the long bridges connecting "mainland" Long Island with the "offshore" island that runs along the south shore and includes Fire Island.

You might need to zoom in so that you can see the Long Island indigenous farewell message...

Thanks all... it was a hoot.

Xlnt!!
Really nice weather, not a single hardtop!

YES !!!! The duck!!!

Great shots ... my father worked on the Grumman A6 intruder the first year it came out ... he was a riviter ... and a few years before that had tried out (unsuccessfully) for the Long Island ducks hockey team (my grandmother made him stop)

He goes by the nickname 'Duck' and we had been to that 'Big Duck' many times even before they moved it from its original location in the early 80's

Love the pics Mark

There are LOTS of places on LI ... you just need to know where to look as they are a distance between them :)

Great pics and memories... Thank You!

With those great pics from Mark, I don't have a lot to add. So I'll just run through the days stops quick and post shots of all the trucks involved yesterday in a separate post.

For others, the start, stops and finish may differ slightly, but these were mine, and I had possession of the briefcase, so I guess this is official (whatever that means).

Beautiful day, mid 60's, and sunny. Not exactly warm, but not cold enough for doors.

Note that this is all on Long Island in NY, so I won't repeat in this post.

Started out meeting Mark, Scott, and Dr Ted at Starbucks in Miller Place at 10.

Headed out to Calverton to meet up with the other trucks at the Grumman Memorial Park. Grumman was a big part of LI until they moved on to greener (cheaper) pastures down south. Met with Tim, Greg, and Ben (and brother who's name I forget, sorry). Supposed to meet Chirs and Jim M there also, but Jim was having engine problems, and Chris stuck with him about an hour away and helped him out, so we didn't meet up with them till later. Thought this was a great place for a photo op, since it's never closed. Wrong. It was closed. So we pulled into the driveway as best we could and Mark managed to get some great shots with the trucks F14 and Warthog.

Next stop, Flanders, and the big duck at 10:30. The big duck is kind of historic on LI, a throwback to the duck farms back in the day. Added Jim L there in his Troopy, really set up nice (pic later). He was on his way to work and couldn't hang with us all day, but for the moment we were at 8 trucks. Everywhere we went, we were getting honks and creating mini traffic jams as people slowed to get a look. Added a couple of items to the briefcase.

Headed from there to the Shrine of Our Lady of the Island. I thought this was a well kept secret till we got there. Must have been a couple hundred cars parked. This is a place where people come to explore religious artifacts (for lack of a better word) on paths that lead from the bottom to the top of a large hill. At the top is this giant shrine (see previous pic). It's at the head of an outdoor chapel where religious ceremony (mass) is held on Sundays, weather permitting. It is probably 5 miles from the ocean, which you can see from the top.

We were getting a little hungry at this point, so where else would we go, but 7/11 for some "quality" snacks.

Dr Ted, and Ben and his brother had to take off at this point, so we were down to 5 trucks.

Next stop, Robert Moses county beach park and lighthouse. Took a while to get there because of some local traffic. Got there and convinced the parking lot attendant to let us in without paying the parking fee. We met up with Chris and Jim M there, hung out in the parking lot for a bit, and decided this was the last stop. It was getting kind of late. I did the official handoff of the briefcase to Jim and we decided to head over to Captree Boat Basin for some real food.

Jim decided to leave to get a fairly early start since he was still having engine problems (he made it home without incident, all the way to Jersey), and Chris had a wedding to go to that he was late for so he left also.

We sat dockside by the party boats and had fried clams, burgers, and fries and chatted for a while before we all went our separate ways.

Here's a couple of shots of Captree, the only thing Mark didn't post pics of...

Well what a fun day. First like to say thanks to Jim and the:princess:. It was nice meeting both of you. Took possession of the baton and headed closer to my back yard. Started with a short walk up to Goat Hill Overlook/Washington's Rock. Popular place to look over the valley.

Little up the trail is Goat Hill Overlook. Lower right is Lambertville, NJ my home town. Across the river is it's sister town New Hope, PA. The shame here is the leaves will be amazing in a couple weeks....
