@JDM Journeys ….. “high speed driving class”.
———————————————————————————
Are we talking “normal vehicle” high speed or “70 Series Land Cruiser“ high speed? 😁
Well... The f150 on the course accelerated faster into the course until the second, third and fourth cones were flying and then some countersteering seemed to be necessary. It wasn't a long course so I got up into 3rd or so... And didn't hit any or lose grip.

The instructor on the offroad course told me it was a "smooth" run too so I took that as a positive.

Just as an aside, those who say this setup isn't fit for the mountains maybe just need to adjust their expectations? With a 100% functional cooling system, and the right set of gauges to monitor, this thing will go over any pass. You just can't do it at stupid speeds. And you have to be willing to let off the throttle when the truck tells you to... I hit 1250 on the EGT a couple of times, and I got to 205 on the water temp a couple of more times, these were for brief periods. Most of the time I was 8 to 900 degrees egt and 190 or so for the coolant.

It's not a sports car or a giant super duty but it never pretended to be...

How much boost are you pushing?

33" or 35"'s these days?

Since my last trip I've been reworking my rear setup a little bit. I changed around my fuse panel in the back and also the way the drawers slide out. More pics later on that but I also added some more overhead storage courtesy of home depot. I've been running a net up top for quite a while in the middle of the roof but this shelf is accessible from the back. It's tucked up where the roof goes a bit higher so you can't even see it in the rearview mirror.

I've been getting a little excess black smoke if I don't ease into the throttle and pick every gear change at the optimum time. And of course hill climbs are watching egt building, letting off on throttle, gearing down, slowing down, then more black smoke.

So... More tuning seems still the order of the day. And since the timing is at the factory spec... That just leaves fuel, AKA Smoke screw. Right @1BDA5560 ? 😉

So today I turned it back about an ⅛ of a turn. Seems counter intuitive when it already feels low on power but I guess there's such thing as too much of a good thing? My test drive route was much better, and I was able to hold throttle longer. Lower egts. Way less smoke. I'm getting there. Slowly. Idle dropped a bit as a result so I'll have to turn that up a pinch.

Water temps were steady and normal too. Yay! 🖐️ @janyyc next time you drive it it might be a *little* closer to yours in terms of performance?

Have you had injectors tested?

I realize with my cruiser turbo'd we are not talking apples to apples here, but I did much the same, but more from an EGT standpoint. I backed my fuel screw off until it takes a fair bit of time before I am reaching 1200F. Obviously ambient Temps makes a big difference here as well.

I have a little less oomph, but with it turbo'd, it is easier to swallow. Now I only push some black smokescreen if I lug a little too much at lower rpm's.

Great to hear your water Temps are steady, that is a great feeling.

Got a new kayak and took it out to the mountains for a paddle, and a night camping. We also took my wife's SUP as well, on the roof. Given the wind, the mountains, and the roof load, she did very well!

"Given the wind, the mountains, and the roof load, she did very well!" - Had you NOT done the pinstripes, I am sure it would have been MUCH slower... 😜

Looks great bud! Glad you are getting out and enjoying it! You are making me jealous, but looking forward to my 2 week excursion starting this weekend!

Today I did some tidying up of my aux electrical system. I finally ordered an MPPT solar controller from Renogy. Still need to get a panel and plan to start with portable folding...

But the big win today was finally wiring the lights behind the gauges in my modified center binnacle.

The batt gauge shows the rear 12v battery. The temp gauge is a bulb type. The only original thing left in the triple housing is the altimeter!

Today was kind of a big day for old Betsy. Today she was driven as my daily driver. I sold my r53 Mini Cooper the other day and my 77 is now the one and only. My wife still has the v8 100 series (we only use it to pull the travel trailer) and her (previously dad's) little Kia, but this is the first time I've had only one vehicle that I drive to work in a very long time.

So if I'm stuck in parts purgatory at some point, we still have backups, but I'm excited that the old girl is finally to a point where she can be my one and only...

Almost a month now of daily-ing this rig. I did make some more micro adjustments and I think I've found the sweet spot? (Yes, I've said that about 10 times before).

Set timing right in the middle of the range at 1.06, turned fuel back a TINY bit more (as in "less"): EGT's stay below 1000F even at highway speeds, and 5th gear is part of my normal repertoire again. ZERO white smoke on startup, even on chillier (4 degree celsius so, far) mornings. Almost no black smoke on acceleration, unless I REALLY lug it, and even then its only a hint. I'm not suggesting it's quick. Not even spritely. "Indifferently-lethargic" might be as complimentary as I can get... but it starts on a half turn every time, runs smooth-ish, sips around 20 mpg, and feels like it will continue to do that long after the AndroidAuto in the dash has gone to headunit heaven.

But there's always a catch right? Well, ever since I got this truck almost 3 years ago (anniversary at Five Guys Burgers coming up soon!), it's had a bit of a rattle (esp when cold) as you reach 2200 or so RPM, and then continues up the rev range. Gets quieter after warmup but never really goes away. I was able to ignore it mostly until now, but with it otherwise running quieter and smoother, I'm probably going to have to see to it soon. Pretty sure it's the clutch. Lots of chatter and vibration in 1st and reverse, and even 3rd gear starts aren't a soft slipper affair. And 1st is getting more difficult to mesh at idle... I'm at around 270k and I have no idea when it was ever done. No discernable play in driveline, no rattling heat shields... happens in 4wd and 2wd, only with clutch engaged, and only under load. Time to start gathering parts soon... Perhaps the 100 series will temporarily get a little daily action?

Until then, this 32 year old daily will keep on trucking.

So if you saw my "diesel nailing thread" you'll see that I had a sudden inspiration about where my rattle could be coming from. Yeah, not so much. Now I will say, replacing the injector seats, seals, and fuel rail washers, as well as cleaning the little bit of carbon off the injectors did help some. A little boost in power, by the seat of my hopeful pants, anyways.

However, look at this picture and tell me what's wrong with it?

That's right, the intake is not stuffed with a rag. This is not my first rodeo, but apparently on this particular day I must have been kicked by the bull. I was putting the fuel rail nuts back on the injectors, when one suddenly jumped out of my hand. Yep. I tried all order of mirrors, magnets, magnets on extendable sticks, plus every light I had, and I could not find that nut. (In the back of my mind I was trying to convince myself that there was no way it dropped down the intake). After an hour and a half of searching, I finally gave in to reality. I would have to pull the intake in order to confirm that my engine wasn't about to get a very crunchy (and deadly) snack. This meant pulling the fuel injector lines all the way out, etc. After much (more) deliberation, and pain, I laid my intake on the bench. What do you think was sitting in the port, ready to dive off the edge? Yep. A large, very hard nut. (Sort of like my head). I managed to coax it off the edge with my magnet, then bolted it in place, to the correct number of foot pounds. I may have even added an extra ugga-dugga as punishment.

While I had it off, I gave the intake a good look. It was downright clean as far as diesel intakes go, and looked way better than that Prado 90 intake I pulled a few years back with 100k kms on it. EGR= the devil's work. This old 91 with 275k kms has no such evil witchcraft, and it showed!

We even got to hang out with (my former) Betsy5 Pajero for the day!

The moral of the story is that the washers and seats were already there and functional but replacing them with new ones didn't hurt anything. And maybe it runs a tiny bit better?

In summary, at almost three years with me, she's now running like a top (rattle notwithstanding) and is about as good as she's ever been under my tutelage. Almost zero smoke on startup, climbing hills, etc. Today I went on a hike to the mountains, and my egt's were reasonable, my water temps were good, I could use 5th ascending 75% of the moderate hills, I maintained the posted speed limit (gasp), and we even had a headwind. Disclaimer: Mostly empty, and no RTT on top, so that helps, but still! She is running about as good as an atmo diesel can expect to run at 1100-1600m on a windy day.

Next up: Clutch slave and booster are getting some attention. New CSC is sitting on the bench, and I'm waiting on a rebuild kit for the booster on the (inside) firewall. (CSC is leaky, and sometimes pedal is hard, also shifting is more bus-like than even an H55 really should be).

It's truck anniversary time. Went to five guys as is our tradition. 35k kms now since I bought it, so sitting on 275k. As I previously mentioned, she is now my daily so those k's will be adding up.

Aside from an unexplained rattle that I've had for three years, she's smoke free, and running like a top.

Here's to another three, Betsy!

They're super bright and actually light up the ditch a bit!

As well, I bought some Carhartt seat covers. They were cheapish. I'd say for a cheaper seat cover they're okay... They do look a lot better now that I've sat on them for a few days, compared to the pics...

The center between the bolsters was gapped at first but after 300km it's molding pretty decently. (I should take another pic soon).

Anyways, makes it easier to slide out, and will keep the outer bolsters from degrading further.

Also, a smoke update...

Since the temps have dropped I've been curious how it would start. I guess I needn't have worried. I've had a few -14c starts at the end of the work day (no plugins) and a single glow yields a half turn start with no stumble/no smoke. I set the cold idle at 1000rpm off the acsd lever, and it starts perfectly smooth every single time.

This is quite honestly the best cold starting diesel I've ever had in 18 years of driving them... even better than the two DI diesels we had!
