*****UPDATED INFORMATION****

see quote below from 'wscbill' .... detailed list is attached

Here's some additional information and details on tools and tool kits. This guide covers Land Cruiser tool kits through 1984, and includes criteria to help identify the kits and the tools included with each of the kits.

View attachment 768799

Using the previous information in this thread as a starting point, the inventory provides additional detail on the tools that make up these kits. The results are based on a survey of IH8Mud Forums/Classifieds, eBay listings, other internet resources, review of Toyota brochures and parts lists, and first-hand research. This is a work in progress, so please post suggestions, corrections, and additional information.

Tool kits are categorized by the size, material and marking of the tool box, roll or bag; there are seven basic styles:

Metal Tool Box – probably not provided with U.S. Land Cruisers
Large Tool Roll, 23mm – fits 2-piece, 23mm lug wrench
Large Tool Roll, 21mm – fits 1-piece, 21mm lug wrench
Medium Tool Roll, Canvas – same tools as medium vinyl roll
Medium Tool Roll, Vinyl – same tools as medium canvas roll
Zipper Bag, TEQ logo & Toyota Motor – fewer tools than tool rolls, cast jack handle
Zipper Bag, Toyota Motor – fewer tools than tool rolls, stamped jack handle
The Zipper Bag, TEQ logo & Toyota Motor is broken down further to correspond with various tool changes; the designation refers to the bag logo and color of the jack handle:

Zipper Bag, TEQ Yellow
Zipper Bag, TEQ Brown
The guide attempts to provide sufficient description to identify specific tool variants, using objective criteria. Identifying which tool is in a particular kit is not always straightforward, some tool variations are subtle, and most tools are not marked with a part number.

There are many reasons why kits may not exactly match the guide. Changes to tools (like other parts changes) did not necessarily correspond to model year changes, and new stock was phased in as old stock was depleted. Given the number of individual tools in a kit, it is not unusual to find kits composed of various combinations of prior, current, and/or later tools. It is not uncommon for one or more tools in a kit to become lost and later be replaced. Some kits have been pieced together from one or more other kits and/or loose tools.

Despite these limitations, I hope you will find this to be a useful reference.

This is the newly modified list originaly from tim stevens during the time of the LCML.... thought it was a great resource and thought we might want to:

1) expand on it for more complete coverage for all years
2) post pictures of complete kits and tools to go with part numbers

I will update this 1st post with most current information collected

....I do have some knowledge to
share. Here is a (long) look at the contents of the FJ40/FJ55/BJ40/BJ42
tool kits (from research for a possible TT article). For those of you
uninterested in the factory tools/parts, look no further and delete this
message. However, I hope that some of you may find this helpful. I'm
sure that there are typos in this. Cope. :)-))

Notes:
- All info from the Toyota factory parts lists. Typos and errors are
mine.
- Want info on TLCs earlier than '69? Get yourself a parts list from
Toyota.. I suspect that kits were similar to the '69 version. The
pouch was the military-style roll-up kind, with sized pockets for
each tool.
- Parts numbers are continually updated. Your local parts person
should be able to use these to at least begin to look. I believe that
some, many, or all tools are still available from Toyota (but not
necessarily in the older, high-quality versions).
- In general, the earlier the TLC tool kit, the better equipped it was.
Earlier tools were often better in quality than later ones.
- I do not believe that the inspection lights were included in the tool
kits. They are still available from Toyota, I think.
- Kits obviously did not contain the jack extension rods. They did
hold the jack handle.
- From '79 onward, the kit was strapped above the right-rear wheel well
in USA FJ40s (and in other countries?). The jack handle extensions
(and engine crank) were stored on clips over the left-rear wheel well.
I believe that before that, the tool kit was in a lockable box under
the driver's seat, right? A large black rubber band was used to hold
the kit down. I believe that these are still available from Toyota.
- And yes, I have too much free time. (Seriously, the factory parts
list is a treasure trove of information.) Now don't bug me anymore.
:)-))

I believe the pouch is incorrect. The one from 73 to 80 were zipper and the later were fold up. I do know my 70 tool kit also included feeler gauges, spark plug gap tool, small wrench for igintion, file and a small test light. Same with my 63 set. The owner's manual went in a pocket in the roll up kits.

This was posted by Isotel in this FS thread from the '66 service manual.

I'd love to know what vehicle this one came out of. It's just like the ones from an fj40, but it's deeper.

yes i believe it went:

Early tool Rolls from the original Bj - 1968?
1968?-1970 Canvas Roll
1971 -1972 Vinyl Roll

I updated the 69-71 kit on the 1st post LITP

I believe those extra small parts I mentioned are just called adjust kit, engine like in the list above. I do know they were all in the blue pouch.

I had this in my picture folder. I know I got it on Mud, but can't remember who to give credit to...

card.jpg

pretty sure it was Rick D. that had those reproduced a while back.

larger metal tool kits...pics from MOT i think

I wondered what was in these boxes originally. I had pictured a socket set in where that screwdriver is.

Since this is looking at tools for the 40, can anyone tell me what these are for? Came with my 77 40.

I think you are correct on the jack parts. Can't figure out how an engine crank would work-no holes in the frame, plus there is no way to let go of the handle if the engine started.
thanks--

The engine cranks work just like the old tractors/generators/welders - the tip of the shaft has a pin that fits into a slot in the crank nut . As the engine starts, that slot has a counter-clockwise spiral cut into the inside that pushes the shaft out of engagement with the crankshaft nut and allows the engine to spin free of the starting handle/crank .
I learned at a young age to look for crud inside that nut , it can defeat the cam slots and cause the handle to remain engaged when the engine starts - bad for the guy trying to hang onto that handle .....
