Okay - My steering wheel to column (36 spline) is a 12 x 1.50.

Was the reference for a 12 x 1.25 nut from a later 33 spline perhaps?

You know, I never counted the splines on the 71 I measured. I have made myself a note to look at that. I will also double check the thread pitch on mine. Not that I ever make a misteake or anything...

Coolerman

On my 79 2f... Timing cover has only 5 of the short split washer bolts. They all have a Phillips head in them and they are 6 x 8 with a pitch of 1. They all have the split washer... the other three... are longer and go on the left/passenger side of the cover. They go through the backing plate and have a nut on the back that is supposed to hold 2 brackets on the back. One bracket has 2 holes on it... and the other one has one... I still can't find the one hole bracket as my wire wheel flung it someplace in my shop and I am still looking for it... going on 4 months now.

Anyway I will take measurements of the other 3 bolt lengths and get that info to you here.

That would be great! For anyone else posting information, list it as follows:

Description: What are the bolts holding on? Timing cover for example...
Qty. : How many of each size to fasten a part
Bolt Diameter in mm: like 6mm or 12mm
Thread pitch: like 1.0, 1.25, 1.5mm
Bolt Length in mm: How long is it
Shoulder length in mm: How long is the UNTRHREADED section of the bolt. (Not all bolts have unthreaded sections.)
Washers: split, flat, or both. Make note of special thickness or material.
Head diameter: What size wrench does it take. Also is it HEX, Phillips, both...
Toyota hardness number: This will be a number stamped into the head. Like 4, 5, 6, 7... Not all bolts will have this...

Checked this last night: 2/71 FJ40 one piece OEM steering column

36 splines and 12mm x 1.25. Verified with a thread gauge...

Tranny Support to Frame

On my '81 40 the tranny is supported by a "support" which is bolted to the frame (see crummy pics).

The boneheads who sandblasted my frame returned the frame minus the bolts which held this support in place.

For the life of me I can not find the correct bolt/thread for this tranny support. Im pretty sure it is a 12 mm but not sure of thread. I've checked your spreadsheet but don't see this listed.

Any help?

Cooler; was working at changing the body mount donuts and have already broken 2.........mine are very rusty and although had sprayed them with Kroil and PB blaster; 2 snapped..........any source for New body mount bolts?.........checked with Wurth and they did not seem interested in a few bolts:frown:
C-Dan is out and other prices are over 10$ a used bolt:frown: TIA

For the early FJ's the body mount bolts are 10mm x 1.25 x 50mm long. The OEM bolts have a 23mm shoulder but it is not necessary. So find any place that has 10mm x 125 by 2" long, get 12 of them, and your good to go. This thread has links to many sites that will sell bolts in small quantities.

When chosing a grade of bolt is it better to have a higher grade bolt than what Toyota originally had?

If you could get all the bolts on a cruiser would you rather have them all 8.8 or higher?

That's a tough one...

There are several different strength classes of bolts used on Toyota vehicles, with each class meant for their particular job. For the majority of them the extra strength would cause not any issues.

Bolts that mount drive train, engine assembly, or steering components however, I would try to match the Toyota specs.

Maybe the bolt engineer who posted earlier could shed better light on this...?

I found a good selection of zinc plated JIS hardware at a decent price at Lawson Supply. It was a little hard to find on their web site, but I found it by searcing on "JIS"

What's their website?

This is a great thread. Thanks for all the imput. This is bookmarked for when I start to rebuild. One question. Is anyone going to make a large purchase soon so someone else can tag along? I would consider buying everyting new for my build up which I am about to start.

Here's the link for the Google impaired. I bought 100 M8 bolts, 50 M6 bolts, 100 hex nuts, 100 each of M6 and M8 flat washers and lock washers for just over $60 plus about $8 for shipping.

Generic Application Error Test JSP (Item)

I can't explain the weird text on the link but it does work.

I might've found a good source for our Yellow Zinc JIS bolts. I just received an order of about 3600 pieces consisting of flanged and non-flanged nuts and bolts and washers from Coolerman's sheet (Thanks for putting that together).

I found a place here in Denver that was willing to work with me to get these. The total price was about $650. I bought volume pricing hoping there might be some others who would like some, otherwise I will be good on hardware for the next 3 or 4 restos!

I would be happy to put together a full kit (around 1000 pieces), or a half kit, whatever anyone may want. I'll have to figure out a price if anyone is interested, but it'll just be at cost (+ shipping and packaging). Flanged is a little more. Please PM me if anyone is interested! I'll figure out the details and post if there is any interest.

Hopefully this will be a good resource.

Ok, here's what I've got, all Yellow Zinc Plated:

Both Flanged Hex and Regular Hex JIS Bolts:
M6 x 10,12,16,20
M8 x 16,20,25,30,35
M10 x 30

Both Flanged Hex (Serrated) and Regular Hex JIS Nuts:
M6, M8, & M10

Lock Washers (Split) & Flat Washers
M6, M8, & M10

A full kit according to Coolerman's Sheet would consist of something like this:
M6 x 8 Qty 10
M6 x 10 Qty 4
M6 x 12 Qty 35
M6 x 16 Qty 50
M6 x 20 Qty 50

M8 x 16 Qty 50
M8 x 20 Qty 70
M8 x 25 Qty 40
M8 x 30 Qty 40
M8 x 35 Qty 20

M10 x 30 Qty 35

M6 Nuts Qty 40
M8 Nuts Qty 60
M10 Nuts Qty 10

M6 Washers Qty 75 Flat & 75 Lock
M8 Washers Qty 75 Flat & 75 Lock
M10 Washers Qty 20 Flat & 20 Lock

Total 854 Pieces. Price would be around $170 for Regular Hex and $195 for Flanged Hex for the full kit.

Let me know if anyone wants anything, half, quarter, or whatever is ok too.

So is a "full kit" all the hardware one would need for the whole truck or is that just the for the chassis?

It should be for the whole truck (to the extent Coolerman's sheet is, which is pretty extensive), certainly more than just the Chassis as many of the bolts are on the engine and drivetrain, if that's what you're after.

I am looking into a SEMs order and SS order as well for the machine screws and exterior hardware like hinges, latches, bumpers, etc...
