Notes on replacing steering shaft firewall boot

I noticed a little warm draft last summer and tracked it down to the boot around the steering shaft rubber boot on the firewall being torn. It took a couple months to get around to ordering it from CDan and then it sat in the arm rest for, oh, about nine months.

For some reason I got the bug to change it and here are a couple notes: Done correctly, this is a 15 minute job.

The FSM says to take out the entire steering wheel and column assembly, this is why I put it off for so long. The easier way is to disassemble the flex joint. The steps are as follows.

1. Remove the single bolt that holds the lower half of the joint to the shaft. Paint mark it to ease reinstallation, but the way it is made (the bolt goes into a notch in the shaft) you really can't reassemble it wrong.

2. Remove the two bolts and nuts that go through the rubber disk in the joint.

3. Once this is done, push the lower part of the joint down the shaft (it will go about a 1/4 inch further down when the bolt isn't holding it in the notch). **Don't let the steering wheel move as it must go back on the same way. If you are off by 180 degrees, the steering wheel will be upside down. If you are off by 360 degrees the wires for the horn, airbag, and cruise control will bind before you hit the steering stop (the steering box does ~4 turns lock to lock, the wheel does ~6 from wires binding to wires binding). 4. Take the joint apart. It has two dowels that line it up with the notches, but with the extra 1/4" clearance, it can slip apart.

5. Remove the two bolts holding the seal to the firewall. Note the orientation for installing the new one.

6. Install the new seal and bolt it down.

7. Put the joint back together. Try to do it the same way it was before or you'll figure it out in a couple minutes. . . Couldn't find torque specs, but it was fairly hard to get off, so I torqued them on fairly tight. Since having this joint come apart would be about the worse thing that could happen on the freeway, loctite and paint marks to check for slippage might not be a bad idea.

8. Put the bolt back in that secures the joint to the lower steering shaft.

9. Hopefully, you're done. Check the steering wheel for orientation/travel from lock to lock.
10. Check bolts on t
he joint periodically for loosening.

Was your steering shaft leaning to one side? I replaced my boot once already and it broke within a couple of weeks. My steering shaft leans to the right which then broke the rubber boot agian.
 
Mine moved around the opening a bit as I rotated it, but not too much. It's only been in a week though so we'll see how long it lasts. . . At least it's not too expensive and I have gotten pretty good at changing it.

I replaced the dust seal and the rubber part of the rag joint. It took me less than an hour following these instructions. The dust seal was shot (you could fit a loonie through it ;)) and the old rubber joint is slightly warped and the rubber is full of cracks. This definitely improved steering feel.

Replaced the firewall seal on my 80 a while back as when I got the vehicle the existing one was dead. Recently I've been doing a lot of suspension/steering stuff including fitting lower springs to correct caster with superflex radius arms, new Icon 2.0 shocks (nice!), etc. but I cannot eliminate the last bit of steering play. My 80 has the adjustable steering wheel the shaft/column assembly has two uni-joints instead of 1, plus the flex-coupler.

I've seen reference to people fitting special firewall shaft bearings in their 80's to get rid of the Toyota seal, but if the shaft is bent in any way, or just doesn't run true, will a fixed firewall shaft bearing prevent any non-rotational play that might contribute to overall play in steering for older 80's where everything is not as tight as when built?

I don't know if LX450's got the up/down adjustable steering column, but in any case has anyone ever considered or actually done replacement of uni-joints in the steering column/shaft assembly to reduce play just that little bit more? I'm aware that there always has to be some play (just like there always has to be some backlash in the driveline) but there'd be tolerances designed into all the parts ex-factory.

Part # for "rubber part of rag joint" or what did you use if no Toyota part?
 
I put a bearing assembly (pillow block) in the fire wall instead of the dust seal. The one I got the mounting screws fit right through the dust seal mounting screws so it doesnt even take any longer or extra energy than just changing out the dust seal. I have a brand new dust seal in the bag if anyone would like it. Infact...... I have an extra pillow block because where I bought them they only came in twos. The pillow block is cheaper and way superior in my book but like I said. Pay for shipping and it yours either of them.

I did this too but I think it sucks and was a dumb idea. The steering box is attached to the frame. The bearing is attached to the body. They don't move together.
 
Any details on that bearing unit? Pics maybe? I have also considered the movement of the shaft relative to the chassis (where the box mounts) and the body. The other thing I've considered is that in some markets the steering column is made with a collapsible section (in my 80's it's in the engine bay so outside of the firewall) and I just wonder that in a crash maybe a fixed bearing instead of the 'loose' seal may affect the behaviour of the safety design. Honestly I don't know about that but just a consideration.

But, to help keep the shaft operating nicely, fully sealed from the engine bay, etc. I still think a bearing block if the right size/type can be sourced, is a brilliant idea. I've only seen RHD 80's in person so I dunno if the LHD ones got the exact same firewall seal, etc. setup.

I've got a seal on the bench at home but lack the dexterity in middle, ok, old age to get under there and swap it our. Anyone in Victoria willing to do it for a slab ???

Which pillow block did you buy?
 
Do not use the bearing.
Get the Toyota grommet.
You do not owe me for saving your time, money, and frustration.
The Grommet is flexible for a reason.
The bearing squeaked at every turn of the wheel.
