Ill probably steal the studs from the 60 axle.

Yeah, for once i thought ahead and threw a proportioning valve in when we were setting up the brake lines so i should be able to proportion and whatnot.

Have to decide if im keeping the e brakes on the 80 axle. My drive line parking brake seems to work awesome so it isnt needed and i hate the cables running across the back of the axle..... I did grab the cable and parking brake lever from this 80 just in case plans change.

Got er cut up and gutted today and didnt break a bolt miraculously. Bearings look clean as does the ebrake junk. Calipers may have spent some time in salt water at some point, gonna look at the closer tomorrow and maybe price out replacements.

Lil more grinding and it should be ready to do something with..

Shock mounts and peaf pearches.

Looked at the studs as well, by my count i have to replace 4 long ones. So all of them except one (1:30 position when looking from the front of the diff) will be short. Hows my math?

And are there supposed to be cone washers at the axle shaft studs/bolts? Mine just came with nuts and washers..

D

Wow you got that ground down quick!

You can get new reman calipers or rebuild what you got.

I think the non-E-locker diff all studs are the same length just like any other axle.

Where the axle shaft bolts to the wheel hubs there should be a cone washer around each stud just like the front.

Gotcha. Have to dig up some cone washers from my front end parts pile i guess.

On my spare 60 axle one stud is longer and the lip of the third is thicker there.. the 1:30 position. Looks like its the same length stud as the one in the 80 axle now. Gonna have to take a look at the one under the 40 i guess.

Yeah i kinda went to town there w the plasma and grinder. Still a few tits to clean up but its pretty good. Also picked up a set of calipers and pads today. Have to rummage through my parts bins and see what else i have.

Does the rear take the same seals as the front? I have seals that fit the 60 front axle somewhere..

D

Don't know about the seals but I hope they are because I'm in the same situation. Does Terrain Tamer have a rear 80 kit yet?

Was looking through some threads on beefing up dowel pins and swapping the studs at the axle flange to bolts.

https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/rear-axle-hub-stud-and-dowel-pin-upgrade.802183/

Id love to get rid of the cone washers and just stick some grade 8 bolts in there like dude did. Think theres any negatives to doing this, using a bolt and lock washer instead of the studs cone washers, washers and nuts? Can always do the 100 dowel pins later on.

Planning to order oil seals today.

So my spare axle is from an 86 bj60. It has 2 longer studs at the 130 and 5 oclock positions and the rest are short. Gonna get pete to check the third under the 40 tonite to see if its the same which i think it will be. So im thinking only 5 studs have to be swapped from the 60 to the 80 axle since the 2 longer ones on the 60 axle seem to be the same length as the ones already on the 80 axle..

D

Can confirm, 4 studs need to be swapped out to go from factory locker to a regular diff, or vice versa.

Mine took 5 short ones Johnny... maybe im all fawked up now lol.

Got the 60 axles and third out of the spare axle and stole the studs i needed. Goddam the spider gears are a pita to pop back in when the thiŕd is rolling around on an uneven bench lol. So now that thats done im waiting on seals and the new rotors i popped for. Parts place had pads and calipers in stock so that blew my mind a little.

Gonna clean up the housing a lil more and weld the pearches together while i wait on parts. Contemplating some kind of truss when i get some measurements from the 40 maybe....

D

Not much happenin, had to go to work which sucks. But i have been collecting parts for the rear axle. So far i have new calipers, rotors, seals and pads. Ordered new cone washers today since i cant find my spares as well as the air filter that i remembered i needed at the last moment.

Stopped at the local parts place to inquire about nitro chromo axles and was told that theyre not in stock and have no eta.... Now the only option ive found is poly performance. Gonna look into that tomorrow and try to find a canadian distributor, between the duty at the border (free trade my ass!!) and the s*** exchange rate i dont wanna order from the states and get raped in the ass.

Otherwise, planning to grind off the rest of the ebrake and brake line tabs tomorrow and start painting some bits. Might take a rip out to petes later in the day to get some measurements, have to remember to pick up an angle finder since randy was a dick and took his back lol. If i get the pearches welded together i might just take the 80 axle with me and tack junk on over at his place. I figure id be less likely to fxxx up if i do it there. He has a little 110 welder but it should do the trick.

So far the plan is to run the stock axles unless i can find a decent price on chromos, replace the axle studs at the hub with bolts, and leave the stock dowel pins in there. If i end up breaking them down the line i can do the 100 series pin/bolt/2 extra dowel mod. Once i either have measurements from petes or even better have the leaf pearches tacked in place i can start dicking with some kind of truss deal.

Also found the other half of the pipe cap i used fro the front diff armour so that can get riddled with fancy holes and stuff. I contemplated cutting the 80 cover off and welding the ruff stuff one on from the 60 axle but that seems like too much work. Thinking id make more cash sellin the 60 axle with it anyways.

Thats the story so far. Right now im havin scotches and drunkenly trying to find center line on the 80 axle lol.

D

So- when ya gonna get around to putting the plow back on?

Pete

Next winter man!

D

Well my parts guy did some digging and found the last set of nitro axles available from the last run so those got ordered today. Goddamit 40 stop taking my money!.

D

Just so you know, the stock FZJ80 shafts are chromo. Nitro and Poly are stronger, but not enough to spend the $$ IMO. In all the years of me beating the hell out of my 80, I only broke one rear shaft. I bought a used stock replacement for $50 and swapped it out in camp. (Gotta love FF axles!) Food for thought.
