A buddy of mine pointed these out to me. I contacted the shop who makes them and it sounds like if there were 10 of us who wanted them the price would be down to $600 or so and if it were 20 it would be under $500. There isn't currently a set for 80 series being made so that's why we'd need a minimum number of orders to get some made. So, I'm not doing a group buy yet or anything, but I thought it was worth seeing if there was any interest.
It would cost $900 for a 1 time custom set, hence looking to see if anyone else would want to do a group buy!

My buddy has a set for his 5th gen 4runner and they only weigh about 35lbs per side and appear to decrease ground clearance less than a traditional slider.

For someone like me who doesn't rock crawl and drives to avoid hitting the rockers I think these would be more than enough protection. Plus, I wouldn't mind taking 120lbs off my truck. (I have Metal Techs on there now)

They still look pretty stout.

I may order a set either way, but I wanted to see if anyone was interested.

..........

For what you are looking to do I would just copy landcruiser phil's design.

FWIW - I wanted to wait till we made our production run was done but we have been testing our prototypes for both 80 & 100. We are happy with our design and in process of putting together a production run for 80 and 100.

Less expensive rock rails come to people that can wait.;)

We are shooting for $300 shipped. Production to begin next week

I can wait:popcorn:

I don't really see the benefit, it is basically just a form bent piece of .120 riveted to the rocker panel. Might be a neat option for someone who has already damaged the rockers though.

Benefit would be as stated. Not adding 200lb to the truck in sliders. Not reducing ground clearance by as much. (My metal tech's hang LOW). Still protecting the rocker from getting taco'd. :hhmm:

Interesting.
Ive seen and helped install similar designed rock guards/sliders on jeeps.
I use my sliders occasionally to move boulders on tight trails or rotate off them to a better position so a little further out would be nice.

LCP rock rails set ~5/8" below the pinch weld or 2" more clearance then the lowest clearance slider I have found. Total weight both sides ~27lbs

During the last couple years of testing I have found several times I would have been denied with real slider. Not to say theses are an equal replacement but like every product there are trade offs but for my needs rock rails have been the ticket..

Make no mistake sliders have there place just not for the wheeling I do.

They are so stealth:rolleyes: they are hard to see in pictures.:D

When the production run is complete and ready to ship (just the way I do things) I post a new thread with all the info anyone would want to know with performance videos and lot of pics.

Please stay tuned for the thread but for now a little teaser pic:o

Interesting...

I've been looking for replacement for the POS sliders a local 4x4 shop built for me a few years back that have now rusted out. Can this style protect the body from damage if the truck body comes down hard on a rock, or is it strictly meant for "sliding" over obstacles?

I have seen the rocker protection that Soaztim is describing in person. These offer a substantial weight savings over the traditional frame mounted slider while still being strong and not hindering ground clearance. A tube can be added for further protection. I believe on a 5th gen 4runner with an outer tube (see silver 5th gen 4runner pic) they are 35lbs each side.
For non rock crawling applications, I see this as a great option plus potentially the price could be more reasonable than frame mounted versions.

Very interesting, been looking for something similar except for maybe a bit wider to double as a side step. Subscribed!

Id be in for a set for my 96 LC!

Something that could double as a side step would be right up my alley as well.
