Looking to remanufacture an early F engine from a 67' FJ40, so need a machine shop / mechanic around LA/OC that does good work. any recommendations?
also considering just swapping to a remanufactured 2F engine, but unsure of the procedure and compatibility on my FJ.

all recommendations & thoughts welcomed below! 🙏

Well, I don't know the SoCal area but I can recommend Yota1Performance in Riverbank,CA, BTB in Reno, Classic Cruisers in CO, Redline Cruisers in CO and Mosley's in TN. Yota1 is the closest to you and I highly recommend them. They have a 1F expert in the house (Nick).

A call to Mark A (Marks Offroad Burbank ) wouldnt hurt as he will have experience with which machine shops down there that have done F motors for him in the past, real first hand experience. If I was having a LC motor built I would contact Mosley, FWIW.
^this. From my understanding and talking with Mark, there are some very exact and non-intuitive specs as relates to journals that the shop needs to know before working on a block.

I had a great experience with Martin Davidson in Reseda for my 2F head, apparently he does a lot of work for K&H.

It is worth a call to Mark at Mark's Offroad in Burbank (google his #), he will only communicate by phone. If he doesn't answer, leave a message and he will return your call. Not sure what your capabilities are for removal/re-install, and initial start-up and break-in of a new engine. Mark has forgotten more than most of us would ever dream of knowing about these trucks and has a network of specialists that know what needs to be done on these engines.

AAA engines is now
Engines-USA is in SoCal (Woodland Hills), but their website is down, for some reason. They have an ebay store - $6,999. $1.500 core charge.

However...there isn't one rating I've found above one star.

Thanks for the referrals guys, but I stopped doing engines a decade ago. Too many years, trained too many shops that couldn't follow instructions. Just got tired of my reputation hanging on third party inconsistencies. And I don't have the motivation to do the assemblies myself anymore. Even a simple regasket/refresh seems to take me a couple of months.

As for an install, that's not out of the question, just out of range right now. I'm still doing a lot of mail order rebuilding, and have two project vehicles waiting in the wings. Couldn't fairly offer to do an install until sometime in the spring. That's unfortunate since I seem to have a knack with the F135s.
