18's?!

Congrats.

I don't know too much about the comp springs, but they seem to me that they would be too stiff for the type of wheeling in the area.

huh?

sombrero? Is that in reference to the dash?

I put a deposit down on my 80 and should be picking it up this coming weekend. My immediate plans are to ad the OME 5" comp series kit, 315 MTs on some sort of wheel (currently sitting on 18s), then an ARB front bumper, sliders, winch w/ synthetic line, Hellas, OBA, re gear to 4.56, probably a rear bumper too. And most importantly get it all up to speed in PM. Got some questions for anyone that has time...

Can the ARB be fitted with a hawse?

Opinions please for wheels, should I go alloys or teflon(cruiser is white).

Suggestions for which OBA set-up? Im looking for small and cheap, I was thinking a compressor with a line, no tank.

I wonder if I should go w/ 4" springs in the back , a lot of LCs I see w/ winch and bull bar end up sitting stink bug, kinda bugs me.I suppose the rear bumper will be a factor too.

Yes as you found you can fit it with the hawse fairlead. How you finish the bumper is up to you.

I have the Teflon Mojave's by American Racing. I like the looks, it is a strong wheel with a thick outer rim lip to help against bending from high speed impacts. The cleaning is super easy and brake dust is barely visible. The only drawback to them is they obviously show scratches easily, I don't care, but they do seem to chip slightly around the lug holes and require a thin wall socket to remove the lugs. Mine is white too so if you want to see pics to get and idea of how it will look.

For on board air I use the Extreme Air compressor that was very reasonably priced, I don't use a tank and it puts out 4.7 cfm IIRC and has a 100% duty cycle. It takes me about 10-12 minutes to air up my 315's from 15 psi to 33 psi. No affiliation just a happy customer.

I hate the stink bug look too and if you go with any OME set up I would reccomend using a step less rear spring unless you plan on having alot of rear weight most of the time. I can't personally attest to the ride or front/rear height of the comp springs but I am sure you can find someone on this board who does.

Congrats on the new rig.

Update

I have sealed the deal and drove my 80 home today. Here she is... I have already ordered my lift, tires, gears, wheels, sliders and PM parts and kabaam. I should be ready for borregofest just in the nick of time hopefully. I took the LC to "The Truck Shop" and had them to a full inspection and it passed with flying colors, the total parts and labor to get her compeletely up to speed is about 400$, chump change relatively speaking. I dont miss my FJC very much...

Anyhow I will be driving it around for a week until the parts come in. Still trying to decide on what tire.

Ahhh, you already took the Neon lettering off of the windshield!
As for tires, this is all in my opinion:

If you are going to do MT's then Toyo Open Countries are the Best although I am pretty happy with my Cooper Discoverer SST's, saved a few $100 with these.
For AT's I guess if you never want to replace tires go with the tried and true BFG's. I guess someone recently had a bad experience with Good Year Silent Armors so you may want to research those before you buy.
And if you are going with and aggressive street tires then the Bridgestone Revo's are top dog.

Looks great. I don't think the wheels are (were) all that bad.

I was thinking of getting these or the Hanook MT possibly. How is the wear or your SSTs? When you air them down does the sidewall seem pretty strong?

BTW yes they are 18s and thats why they are going. Im not into wheelin on dubs:grinpimp:.

Congratulations on the new ride. Well chosen.

Those wheels aren't that bad except the size, kind of looks like a mild version of LX_TREME's. :flipoff2:

I have had my Coopers for 11 months and put 12,000 miles on them so far and they have done great. I am doing a 5 tire rotation and I love the way they look. They have done very well at anything I have been on. In the past 11 months I have been on dunes, In Baja, & rocky areas such as Sand Stone Canyon.
I have heard many things since I bought them such as; they are a little soft and could chew up in nasty sharp rocks, Sidewalls are thin and could be weak, they get louder as they wear, and that they wear quickly.
In response to these, I agree I would be a little concerned in sharp pointy rocks, I don't like to air down all that much nor do I need to, the lowest I go is 20 or 18psi so not too worried about the side walls, I haven't noticed the tires getting louder they seem quiet to me?, and they definitely wear quicker than BFG AT's but what doesn't compared to those.

Zach- Congrats on the new 80.

Don't know if you remember me but we ran into each other a month or two ago at the Mobile station on Washington when you were starting to look.

Hey...

Hey Dan! I do remember you, now you know I was a man on a mission:)Beep at me if you see me around town. I just ordered 5 Hankook 35" muds today off ebay for $1006.00 shipped, not too bad. I am dying to get the thing lifted and rolling on some off road tires so I can take my new 80 off road. Dan do you live around airport / downtown area?

I see your a surfer, maybe sometime we can do a little Baja excursion. Here is a pic of me a few years ago in Costa Rica...

Washington St.? Off of the 163?
You guys aren't all that far from me, I just live on the South East corner of Balboa Park in South Park.

If you guys live around there then maybe the next Meet & Greet, San Diego edition should be at Balboa Park. Maybe at the Automotive Museum?
