Also, a dealer that sells a car without a bumper? What kind of dealer is that?

It does have the rear bumper on it, it is called a crossmember. He is just missing the corner "disposable rock feelers". :flipoff2:

Welcome to the group and 80dom. I second what the others said that valve cover leak is minor, it is not even wet. The repair on that is very reasonable with cdan's prices cost wise and a good beginner fix. The knuckles are a bit more of a bear but you will be hard pressed to find one that doesn't already look like the one you pictured, assuming of course that it isn't one of ours. :grinpimp: You are looking at about $500 in parts and $1000 in labor to have it done but you can do it yourself with a little guidance from those on this forum and the FAQ. I put mine off for over a year before I finally got off my lazy ass and did it. I feel there is a whine to the 1FZ-FE motor that is just part of it's character. :D You should defintiely hold out for the 80 that is right for you but I wouldn't let the miles scare you too much. Other than the originally equipped head gasket the 1FZ is good for 300k with regular maintenance. It has excellent oiling journals in the block and is a very reliable and durable motor. Assuming of course that it has been maintained, I wouldn't shy away from one with a few more miles than 100k. Good luck.

hmmm

Thanks fopr the feedback slomo, and everyone else as well. Can anyone comment on the easiest method to making the back sleepable. I see you can remove the last row but what about the 2nd row and the hump on the floor?

Well till I build my drawer system I just removed the second and third rows. Threw down camping mats and put some comforters in the foot wells of the second row to level things out and was good to go. Oh but put the bolts back in the holes from the second row or on a windy night it will whistle all night.

counting the days

I have a buyer for the FJC we are just waiting for the pink to come and it will be a done deal (bout 2 weeks or less).

Counting the days... I will keep you all posted. I am still looking even though I have found one I like, but im kinda limited as to what I can do since I dont have the $$ yet till the FJC is gone. All I have been doing is considering the mods I want to do and talking to shops about price of installation of certain things I dont feel confident doing myself. I am fantasizing about pulling out of my street heading to Borregofest with my new lifted, locked 80 and my dog in the back, with some tunes playing driving down the grade.....:grinpimp:

Im excited about having al that cargo space and a reall beefer Toyota with better visibility. I will miss the speed and power of the FJC but I have enough speeding tickets as it is.

Hmm, me too. Except for the lift and dog part...

Thanks Eric. Sorry I missed you a week ago. Fusible link OK?

Works great, thanks

I held out for a soccer mom cruiser in good condition. It was worth holding out for. Due to financial strain, growing family, etc., mods have been pretty low on my priority list. In the three and a half years of ownership, I've done (in chronological order) new tires, ARB front bumper, rear tire carrier, and then a lift.

What I ended up learning very early on was that the stock 80 with factory lockers, right out of the box, with the Michelin LTX tires and all, is a vastly more capable four wheeler than my Xterra was, even after modification. A stock 80 is more off-roader than most people need to handle 95% of the "technical trails" in the American Southwest. Add rugged all terrain tires to the mix, and you're golden. Bumpers, lifts, interior stuff, roof racks, etc. are all gravy--really unnecessary to the type of wheeling most of us do, but are fun add-ons nonetheless. I'd say mod if you need to--replacing the broken stuff with better stuff, and modding to fit your needs, but I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how well the 80 performs off-road.

And as far as the engine goes, sure, you might miss getting on the freeway at freeway speeds, but when you point it at a steep, scree-riddled hill, you'll be impressed at how nice and torquey the I-6 is.

Couldn't agree more.

I am one of the happy few in the power dept. but I came from a 22RE turning 35's so...;p

Hey, there is a White cruiser on Miramar Rd, at the little car dealership in the parking lot of the Miramar Auto Mall a few lights off of the 805. I know nothing about it since I keep forgetting to stop and look at it till' I pass it but for those of you looking you might want to check it out in your travels.

thanks mark, good lookin out as the gang bangers say! The one on Miramar is the one that I first was asking questions about...as far as the engine and the leaky seal :).

Should have cash in hand and the FJ sold by monday of next week. Then I can get serious...

well..

I do like that one, too bad it has enkei 18s on it and no stock alloys which i like but hey thats not a deal breaker. Lets just hope its still there when i get my $$ squared away. I have planted some seeds on other rigs just incase...

Yeah, check the HE!! out of Craigslist and keep an eye out on here. Getting a rig off of this site would be best in my opinion because you are most likely to get one that has been base lined, and has the right mods done to it. There are quite a few rigs on here that DON'T get thrashed off-road.

Yep, i agree. I bought mine from a fellow cruiserhead on this board. The 80 had never been in the dirt by any of the PO's. They do exist! :grinpimp:

well

I put a deposit down on my 80 and should be picking it up this coming weekend. My immediate plans are to ad the OME 5" comp series kit, 315 MTs on some sort of wheel (currently sitting on 18s), then an ARB front bumper, sliders, winch w/ synthetic line, Hellas, OBA, re gear to 4.56, probably a rear bumper too. And most importantly get it all up to speed in PM. Got some questions for anyone that has time...

Can the ARB be fitted with a hawse?

Opinions please for wheels, should I go alloys or teflon(cruiser is white).

Suggestions for which OBA set-up? Im looking for small and cheap, I was thinking a compressor with a line, no tank.

I wonder if I should go w/ 4" springs in the back , a lot of LCs I see w/ winch and bull bar end up sitting stink bug, kinda bugs me.I suppose the rear bumper will be a factor too.

Congrat's on your new 80.

Looks like you've got one in the best color too!

It's just me, but I'd do a once over on the rig before putting/buying any gear. Even if it came from a Toyota dealer that put it through a million point inspection. That'll give you time to get to know the rig: How it handles stock, how much lift you'll need, etc...

Seriously, going through the rig and doing some base-lining and PM's should run you 1K or so. And that's without something being broken or needing replacement. That's also assuming you do the work yourself. Take it to the dealer and you're looking at 3K.

One of the first things that I did was address the roof rack. Took me most of two weekends to tear apart the interior, pull the headliner, fix the nutserts/holes/rust and then put it back together sans ribs and with stainless steel hardware and rubber foots.

I've had my 80 since the beginning of the summer and I'm still slowly chipping away at all the small repairs. And this is in a well kept 97.

So you are grabbing that one off of Miramar Rd? What year is that, I noticed it has the "TOYOTA" grill, so did you get stuck with the small engine? I can't remember if 94 had the bigger engine with the old school  grill.

YOu are correct that it is a 94 but no it does have the bigger engine from everything i read. Still feels way slow compared to my 4.0 v6 in the FJC. I figured out the question regarding the hawse, searched it.
