This isn't a Chilton's. Do you have a Chiltons. I picked up my first Haynes around 1979. Came used with some parts I bought. That one is 68-77. The other four I have are the 68-82 version. I have never bought one of these from a store. Only Chilton's I seen was at a library.

Got the front end parts all apart. Now I need to clean and paint everything. My enthusiasm is running low for this.......

Thought I I would share if you want to try it. Parts of pieces where I don’t want to get hit with paint, I apply a thin film of moly grease. After paint is dry, wipe greasy areas with a clean cloth or rag. Beats using tape to cover parts that you don’t want paint on. See hub flange surfaces that were coated in grease, painted, grease wiped off. This might bring some enthusiasm back😁!!

Great advice. I have used vasoline to mask parts that get spray painted. Works very well. Thanks for the reminder @ceylonfj40nut

The problem is not the drum brake part.....its the 50 plus years or crud build up on the parts. I will get thru it and back to the fun part of reassembly.

The problem is after all that work you will still have front drum brakes

@JackA Just curious why front drum brakes? Are you shooting for factory restoration?

When I take the time to adjust the drums properly I can step hard on the pedal once and lock all four wheels and not pull either way. On the pre 7/70 FJ40 with single circuit brake lines it is a lot of work converting to disc brake. 68 and earlier even more with the ball and claw on the front axle. Far less just adjusting the brakes. I am also of the opinion just adding disc brakes does not make a safe driver in today's city traffic. I don’t even like driving my FJ62 in city traffic. Even adding four wheel disc brakes the leaf springs will never match the suspension on model vehicles that all have ABS brakes. The 40 is my favorite vehicle to drive just not in traffic.
