Video I took after valve adjustment. Still not right. In cab video almost can hear rattling? Loose rocker? You can see the plug wire shaking to see how it's running. I know it's hard to tell. I also sprayed carb cleaner on several spots with no change? Next step is to start replacing vacuum lines. Sorry for the crappy videos in advance.

Decided to back her out and give her bath. Rpm's fell to 400-500 then dropped to almost dieseling and shut off. Washed her and she fired right up, idled at 500 and took another video of rattling sound. Pulled back in the carport and jumped under the hood and sounds like #3 or #4 intake valve? Any case that is going to be it for me for a while. Won't be able to do any work till late May or June. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Well here is another video. I checked the injector plugs and nothing changed. Any body have an idea what would cause a random miss like this? Thanks in advance.

Mine does the same thing. Has for the 26 years I've owned it, through two balanced rebuilds. I think it's just the way it is.

It didn't do it before the rebuild so I'm gonna keep plugging away at it till I figure it out. Might just take it to the dealer as I need this thing up and running good ASAP.

Decided to let the truck idle for a bit in my carport and then I happen to catch steam coming out the exhaust!?!? WTF! So I decided to do a compression test and I got 180-182 between all four. What could be causing the steam and the random miss at idle? :bang: Could it still be the sea foam I added to the fuel when I bought it? Frustrated beyond belief!

I think you're stressing over something that is insignificant. Even though it's been rebuilt, it's a 28 year old engine and ignition system. It's not gonna be as smooth as your Lexus. Drive it for awhile, see if it's using coolant. Pull the plugs, see how they look. If they tell you something, go from there.

I agree. Have you driven it at all yet? If it's running like crap while you're going down the road you may have an issue. Just having a rough idle is not that uncommon. If it's smooth while driving I'd roll with it a little while and see how it does.

Gonna adjust the valves again as I have been adjusting them hot and not cold. So there's the first mistake. My new power steering idler pulley comes in tomorrow morning so after I do the valves and install the pulley I'll be off for a test drive. The truck will idle perfect then out of no where will miss. That's what I can't get. It just misses at random.

I did a search on the vapor coming out exhaust and it just might be because the truck has been sitting a while. I'm hoping that's the case. I leave wenesday again for work so I'll let you know how tomorrow goes. Hoping all goes well. If not it'll be off to a mechanic when I get back.

Thanks

What he said.

Look, you are probably over analyzing this. Way over the top. Hydrocarbon + Oxygen = Carbon Dioxide and HOT WATER which is STEAM! This will be most noticeable on cold mornings until the engine and exhaust warm up. Now if the smoke is blue I would be concerned.

As I, and others, have said, the idle is normal on a 22r/re. My balanced 22RE misses on occasion, always has. I can see it with the timing light. Inline-4 engines are inherently unbalanced. I repeat, inline-4 engines are inherently unbalanced. The larger the displacement, the harder they are to balance (Think 3RZ, see this). Toss in decades old wiring and electronics and your expectation of a super smooth idle is unrealistic. You want a super smooth running engine get an inline-6.

Good gawd man, drive the damn thing. Then report back. And don't tell us the 22RE is a slug, we already know that.

Oh, and to follow through a bit with what I said above. I have an inline-6 engine in my FJ40. It's a fuel injected 2F (2FE or 3FE stroker, what ever you want to call it), balanced to zero. It uses basically the same technology as the 22re ... and it MISSES at idle!

I apologize for the rants. I'm not expecting my 4runner to run like my turbo IS300 did. I just want a fun reliable little vehicle that can tow my whaler to the keys. I'm aware of cold morning starts but it's 80+ degrees down here. I'll shut up over the idle from now on. Thanks for the advice so far as I have never done a job this big before.

Finally home for a few days and started driving the 4runner around. Been enjoying it so much I forgot to reinstall the steering stabilizer! HAHA... I hit a speed hump and bent the crap out of it. No worries as a new one is on the way. Also forgot how bad the brakes and steering are. I'm going to start working on the brakes hopefully later this week. As far as the steam I read some threads stating that if you live in a humid climate and let your truck sit for a few it will blow steam. So after a bit of running it cleared up.

Decided to check the local pick-n-pull inventory and to my surprise they had a 89' SR5 4runner! So I grabbed my tools and off I went. Turns out it was a V6 auto, but still had some pieces I wanted. In the end I got aisin locking hubs, digital clock, and over head map light for under $17. Was feeling pretty good till I realized I forgot to grab the map light cover! Doh...so I'm heading back again tomorrow to grab that. All in all was a great day. :smokin:

Finally back in town and got a day to work on my 4Runner. Did new rotors, bearings, and pads. Took all day because it's only my second time doing this (first was my 40 with a front disc using V6 calipers). Haven't driven it yet, but still happy how it turned out.

Anybody ever have an issue where you adjust the valves to factory specs and they are quite but after driving a bit there are one or two that really get loud. Almost as if they loosened up after driving a few? :hmm: I've done the valves 4 times now. Its becoming quite the pain! Oh and the brakes are working great.

Is there any thing I could look for on the valve train that would show wear or at least allow me to figure out what needs to be replaced? I was thinking maybe starting with the adjuster tips? I don't want to buy a whole new rocker set up for $300. I'm hoping that is the last resort.

Edit: Talked with a gentleman that told me what to look for. I'll post some pics when I see something not right.

Generally only 2 things wear (besides the cam): rocker arms and tappets. I replaced all my tappets this time, they were getting mushroomed.

I just pulled all my tapets. Do these look bad to you guys?

Had a fun day today. I ordered the rocker arm adjusters and then decided to install my junk yard Aisins. First one took a while to figure out but the second one went pretty quick. Tore them down and cleaned them up with new seals and what not. Was enjoying myself so I decided to work on something I won't mention. :moon: But I'll show a pic. If it works I'll elaborate.
