I would be pulling off the valve cover and taking a look at the chain guides ASAP. While you're there, adjust the valves.

So I'm back in town and saw this had arrived. The remainder of my parts are arriving tomorrow. Gonna do an inventory of everything I got and see what else I may have missed. Plan is to do timing chain with new guides with a lot of new parts and do the head gasket also. Should be fun. Haha...

For the sloppy steering ide replace inner and outer tie rods. And the idler arm. Then start looking at other stuff. When I got my 88 pickup it was leaking oil, water, and the steering was hella shotty. I ended up replacing everything but the control arms lol

Parts arrived. $804 later I have:
- water pump
- oil pump
- chain tensioner
- timing cover (fricking pricey!)
- engine gasket kit
- intake & exhaust studs
- head bolts
- valve cover washer seals
- drum pads (they where on back order)

Things I still need:
- FIPG
- Ultra grey silicone
- Carb cleaner
- tap for chasing head bolts
- tap for chasing intake & exhaust bolts (might save this for later when I get a header and new exhaust)

If you guys can think of or can recommend something I'm missing or should replace please let me know. Hope to be doing this next week sometime.

Thanks

All right gentlemen I am a two banana mechanic three would be pushing it. Any how I decided to do a compression check this morning. 1. 205 2. 195 3. 205 4. 190 WTF! FSM says 177. Did I not warm the engine up enough? It started smoking so I didn't want to keep running it. Any suggestions? Here is a pic of smoke. Didn't start or I didn't notice the smoke until I put marvel mystery oil additive in. Also didn't start smoking till it warmed up? Sent from the islands.

Edit: oil is not milky.

Well I'm in the same banana boat as you, but higher than normal compression could be from carbon buildup, or maybe some work has been done to this head in the past. Your results are all within 10%, so I don't think you have a HG leak, why are you replacing it?

Seeing smoke coming out the exhaust. Plus i figured since I'm tearing it down this far i figured i would replace the head gasket and have the head gone through. I took the oil cap and saw a puddle of oil? Should I be able to dip my finger in the oil like that? Coolant seems good with no discoloration same as oil. Pic of drained oil coming soon.

I hope this isn't an indication of things to come. Haha...

Thank you. So here is as far as I made it today. Taking my time and hopefully doing it right. Got the answer to the high compression! Carb build up came off in sheets! Haha... I'll take a pic of the bottom of the head later. Also found this piece of rubber sticking in this pipe? I don't think it's suppose to be like that??? On to the pics.... Sent from the islands.

Today was a bummer of a day. Started off having surgery (skin cancer) on my face. Sucks but it is what it is. Head is off getting cleaned up. Got the crank pulley off and noticed this dent in it. I think it's ok but just curious what you guys think? Also should I just put a sleeve where the groove is? On to the pics...

Not sure about the dent but is sleeve it. That way it has a new mating surface

Roger. I put a sleeve on my 40 also. I shouldn't really call it a dent, more like a nick. I'm gonna sleeve it an call it a day. Thanks Sent from the islands.

Edit: forgot to mention I broke two of the plugs going to the injectors. Any body have a part number for those fuel injector plugs?

Is it me or does one of those valves look really badly pitted?

Speedy sleeve the snout of the pulley and is that "dent" the timing marker? Or is that the timing mark slightly behind the "dent"? My crank has a small indentation in it which is the timing mark. Almost looks like somebody took a chisel to it to make it easier to see or something.

I believe it was just crusty carbon build up. Like I said the carbon build up was coming off in thick sheets off the pistons. Top right part of the pulley in the pic is the timing mark.

Send you injectors off to Mr. injector, I think he charges 10-15 each to clean and test. The first picture you posted prior to taking off the head was of the cold start injector, since the PCV is plumbed into the upper intake plenum oil vapor coats everything and since the EGR system will heat the intake plenum it bakes the oil to everything inside of the plenum including the cold start injector.

Since you are going through the engine do your self a favor and have the entire intake system hot tanked, also as I mentioned send out your injectors, including the cold start injector for a professional cleaning. You should check the head for warpage, if not all this work will be lost. The 22RE engine is a good little mule, if taken care of it will last hundreds of thousands of miles, while you are working on it clean off as much built up oil and grim as you can, in the end the engine will perform much better. The power difference between a clean intake and injectors vs not is big, not to mention better fuel milage.

Good luck!
