I recently offered to buy some FJ40 hubcaps for twice the asking price ;)

he refused my offer.

Get them from cruiser Dan at American Toyota, gift wrap them, bring them to him and tell him you'll trade them for your title. If he refuses, gift wrap a letter from an attorney. Pm me and we can talk about letters :-)

The PO is on mud and sells stuff in Vendor section.

He had some early hubcaps for sale recently for $300, I offered him $500 if he also ordered a duplicate title and he still refused.

I would have gotten caps and a title! He would have gotten $500!

Man, you are being held hostage. What's the deal? I feel horrible for you.

I say you post his name and let the board apply some pressure.

You guys are beating on a dead horse, I tried to help here in the past. The guy on the board sold this to someone else who sold it again a few years later. That person never titled it, which is why the current owner is having issues. So the board member could file for a lost title, but he had done the right thing signing it and giving it to the new owner when he sold it. So it's a pretty gray area now and not an issue of him doing anything wrong, it's him not willing to do anything shady. The right way to go is to get a bonded title since you know the history and previous owners, is this difficult in your state? You'll be able to register and drive it, then they'll send you a clean and legal title ...

Tucker

The truck is titled in Missouri, I live in Kentucky so the process becomes more complicated and expensive.

The original owner hasn't done anything "wrong." But I haven't asked him to do anything shady. Heck I would pay any fees, taxes etc involved to get the duplicate title. (In fact I sent him a Money Order to cover fees and he kept it).

I think my point is that the idea of this forum is help each other out. I have received a great deal of help from other members in the form of advice and some cases missing parts. Because the 40 community is small and tight knit, we should help each other when we can.

I once stopped in Tennessee on my way home from a family vacation to inspect a 40 for sale, for a TLCA member I had never met. I later emailed him and told him to keep looking and save himself a 8 hour round trip (the story made Toyota Trails magazine).

I'm not asking anyone to lie, cheat or steal, just do a brother a favor. That's how I roll.

I guess opinions on this are split. Maybe a vote would be in order?

No worries, I would still pull over and help a fellow brother. I guess we are not all cut from the same mold...

If it were me, I would take an hour out of my day and help you in a heartbeat. Somehow though, I don't think giving this guy's name up will help at all. It sounds like he's made his mind up. If I were you, I would start another thread and somehow enlist as many people who can help you with this process. How expensive is it? What makes it so laborious?

Ok, so you bought the rig on eBay. IMO, first issue. Transfer of vehicle was under a confrontational environment.. second issue. You didn't review the title prior to leaving.. third issue. The 40 was bought by 2 other people that never paid taxes or titled it.. fourth issue. You've put an insane amount of money into the rig (looks great BTW) without being the rightful titled owner..fifth issue. Lots of issues with this rig..

Have you called your DMV to discuss this issue and what they recommend from an anonymous standpoint? Or are you worried that all your work/money will be jerked out from under you...(I know I would be)

My view on the matter... The "Original" PO is NOT the owner of that vehicle anymore, (whether his name is on your title or not) he legally sold it. Ethically he has no right to apply for a lost or duplicate title. Have you run the title to verify it is still in his name? Scandalous people in the world today. For all you know "your" 40 could be tied up in a personal loan lawsuit/larsony case and the reason it hasn't been repossessed is because they have no idea where it is.

Little story...I had a buddy years ago that sold a titled piece of equipment to a guy who never titled it... The new owner took out a personal loan with someone, used the equipment for collateral and then sold the equipment without paying off the note. Long story short, my buddy spend over 10k in lawyer representation fees and he did what he was legally required to do by law. They found the piece of equipment and gave it to the plaintiff for settlement. The man that the equipment was seized from was fined for not properly titling the equipment and lost all monies paid for the equipment.

Not saying this is what is going on here, BUT DAMN!! WHAT IF!!

I wouldn't touch this with a 10' pole. I feel the guy you are asking for help is a stand up fella and I respect him for his position. You say he's a vendor here, PM me his name, sounds like a guy I'd like to do business with. It's the people that bend and don't follow the rules that screw it up for so many others...

I'm with Tucker, apply for a bonded title and wait out your time.

Awesome build you have there. Good luck on the title issues...

How do you like your wheel and tire combo? I love the look and I'm considering going with a similar setup. From what I gather I'll need a minimum 3.5" backspace on a 15" wheel to run with my disc brakes. Does this change with a 17" wheel? I appreciate any details you can give me on running this setup!

Thanks,
Kevin

Hey KY Longhunter, I'm bumping this post for my last question... I'm getting close to ordering wheels and would like to know how you like them.

Thanks!

I dont have much time in the saddle as its a 5 yr work in progress. :o

The 15" Mojave has 3 3/4" backspace which is very close to stock, but might interfere with Tie Rod Ends, so would require some sort of spacers in the front.

My 17x8 clear TRE in front, but reqire spacers in rear to keep from rubbing inner wheel wells.

If I had to do over, might go 16" just cause more tire options. Do you know what size tire you will be running?

Hope this helps.

19 mm Negative Offset

The hub mounting surface is toward the back or brake side of the wheels centerline. "Deep dish" wheels are typically a negative offset.

If the offset of the wheel is not correct for the car, the handling can be adversely affected. When the width of the wheel changes, the offset also changes numerically. If the offset were to stay the same while you added width, the additional width would be split evenly between the inside and outside. For most cars, this won't work correctly. We have test fitted thousands of different vehicles for proper fitment. Our extensive database allows our sales staff to offer you the perfect fit for your vehicle.

*Backspacing, similar to offset, is the distance from the hub mounting surface to the inside lip of the wheel (measured in inches)

Regarding the title issues;
Under the circumstances I think it would be justifiable to do a little VIN transplant.
The vehicle was not stolen. On a 30+ year old truck that may already be made up of parts from multiple years who would ever know or care?
I'd probably try to put the issue behind me and buy a rusted out tub with a title & VIN plate in the "parting out" classifieds.
I don't think the Mud member previous-previous-previous owner deserves any heat. The problem was created by the 2 dirt bag flippers in between, not the guy who sold it legally.
He is wise to stay out of it.

KY Hunter, do you have any pics that show how far the wheels stick out from the body with your 1/4" spacers in the rear? I've been shopping hard but keep coming back to the Mojave wheel. I'm thinking about running 1" or 1 1/2" quality spacers to get the look I want. Do you foresee any issues with a spacer of these widths?

Thanks for your help!

Sorry to butt in. With your V8 and the weight of your troopy I'd be a bit nervous about using 1" or 1.5" spacers. 1/4" would be fine I'd think but I would be worried using much more.

I can't speak to what kind of issues you might have with that large of spacer. Others like Chamba know better than I.

Here's a pic as requested.

I agree with Chamba. That's a pretty big spacing for a heavy rig. I'd source some 60 axles to get an extra 1.5" per side. Then if you needed any more, you could get some smaller spacers and keep your bearings happy.
