Today I took the truck for a little spin and got reminded that I have to rebuild the original H engine!

I really like the colors of wheels - they look more grey than blue in the outdoor light!

that is normal for the H/2H engines... ring wear and sometimes block wear can be the issue.

Hi

It looks like the cylinders/sleeves are okay. There is no real wear ind the sleeves. But a measurement will show that.

So this is normal wear after 100000-200000km?

there are many factors that can lead to ring wear into the piston grooves
but
i have seen worse.

poor casting material seems to be the usual cause
if turbo'd then the extra stress on the first ring can cause the wear or so it seems

i should have said couple reasons ... my bad.

Thanks for the replies!

I was just curious if I could prevent some troubles in the future with this engine. I won't have any turbo on this, i will keep it stuck!

Poor casting - proberly!

Just a thought, but couldn't pre ignition, knocking, cause ring damage. A timing issue and poor fuel.

If this doesn't make sense, I blame too much Holiday cheer!

Hard to pre-ignite a diesel since they use compression instead of spark, timing is pretty crucial with the IP but it won't run worth a damn if that's off ...

Yep - no compression = no ignition!

And if you see the pictures of the piston and rings - it is amazing it could fire up!

I just ordered new pistons and piston rings.

a diesel can run on surprisingly low compression ... not run well but enough to get you home.
i have seen a 3B diesel run for years with one almost dead cylinder. until you hit a hill, you didn't really know the cylinder was bad
a gent showed up here with a BJ75 and wanted a turbo to give it a bit more pep.
i took it for a test drive and as soon as we hit a hill it was down to 60 k/h from 85 k/h (back roads)
i did a compression test and it was 420, 385, 150, 420.
after hearing the story he told me, the gent had been driving it like this for over 10 years (not a daily driver) and just assumed that 3B engines were slow and gutless.
we rebuilt the 3B and added a turbo and he was like a kid with a new toy.

i have seen 2H, well most Toyota diesels with poor compression and keep on running for years.

Hi

I think your right - they are pretty reliable! But when you have problems starting the engine even though the temp says 20 degrees celcius it is a problem. Also when it fires up it is smoking like hell and the breather tube looks like a exhaust :)

Then it is too much!

of course you pre-heat before starting ... hence the term PRE-heat.
warms the cylinders for easier starting.

I just got back here, Diesel :whoops:, yeah no pre ignition. If I forget to plug in the block heater on my diesel tractor and start it cold, man it knocks and smokes. Diesels do like it warm.
