Best piece of beef I've had in Calgary was at Mercato on 4th st SW. It was fantastic.

I love your truck! are hj45's common in Denmark? I'm getting ready for another project, and to find a diesel 45 would be the bee's knees. I'm kinda hoping to find one outside of south america.

Crushers is indeed referring to "hot tanking" or cleaning your block in a heated solvent bath. Most engine rebuild shops should be able to do this for you. When done properly, it cleans out all the passages you can't get to in the block. You could try and do it at home, but frankly, it's cheaper to have it done than buy all the supplies.

Great work!

No they are not common - not anymore - must of them is exported to Holland, Belgium, Afrika and Norway.

A lot have been done lately! I got help from a machinist to measure out the liners. I did not measure correctly!

So after a complete measurement of all liners it showed a general wear of 0.20mm and the limit is 0.63mm. So we decided to go with the new pistons and rings. When we change the pistons one of the con rods had a ruined "bearing" and amazingly the local machineshop had it in stock -wtf! Nice and everything was fitted without any problems.

It is still a little difficult to start when cold - it fires ud after glowing, but goes out again. It is like the idling is "rolling" when cold and it has to get over that before it goes very smoothly.

Any ideas?

By the way thank you for all your inputs - I really appreciate it!

I don't know anything about diesel, but you should paint the "TOYOTA" on the tailgate white, it would look good

Is it a cold weather spec truck?

test the glow plugs individually to make sure they all are working.
oil pressure is up?
test for air in the line since if you have a bad fuel line or a return line to the pump, you can get air in but no fuel leaking out.
are you "throttling up" when you start? if so how much?
cheers and congrats on a nice unit ... although factory is white letters, i do like the single red look of the tailgate.

oil pressure is up? I don't know! according to the oilpressuregauge yes

I will look through this, but there is a new hose from tank to pump, no joinings. but the hose from the return line is a little loose. I will try and put a new clamp on that. I have a primer pump that is leaking when pumping, but not visible when tighten.

I will make the white letters in folio, so I can take it off again if I don't like it :)

thx again Crushers

once the first 500 - 1000 km has passed do a compression test ...

I tests the glow plugs - every things good! I took off the primer pump and I am waiting for the new Bosch primer pump. I also took off the part controlling the rack inside the pump. it seems to be in good condition and I am keeping it, but there is a new part on its way.

The brake drums was machined and new pads on the brakeshoes. The tailgate was delivered for some foil work today.

So right now I am waiting for parts…again!

I have been working with the glow system on the truck. Everything has been look/measured and it looks okay. But the glow plug indicator docent glow!

But i have a problem with the cold start, it smokes and stumbles until it fire properly, then it runs nicely!

Then I had a idea - I recently took the glow plugs out to test them and they all worked fine. But I did not pay attention to the number or voltage on the plugs. So this morning I took one out and guess what - 14volt!!!

If I understand this correctly it must be 8,5volt glow plugs?

I guess it means that the 14v glow plugs don't glow that much, when you have an amount of resistance in the wiring and the glow indicator. Which again means less voltage to the plugs and maybe that is why the engine starts with a lot of smoke and stumbles?

What is your opinion?

12V system, right?
the 10.5V plugs work well.
the 6.5V plugs heat up nice and quick but you can burn them out quicker.

cheers

Hi

yep 12v system. I read somewhere on this forum that it must be 8,5volt from factory. I guess they made that decision based on facts :) Also if there is a voltage drop in the system - must be - when there is a glow indicator made of a resistance glow wire! With this in mind the 14v glow plugs will not have the voltage needed to make them red!

Nice find

Hi Jesper

According to the original manual, the starting procedure in cold weather is to depress the clutch, let the glow do its thing, depress the throttle pedal to the floor, activate starter untill running, and hold the throttle untill the engine runs smoothly.
These old ones starts and goes out again if you don't give them some...

I know a lot will say that starting a diesel at full throttle is wrong, but its what Mr Toyoda recommends in the manual for BJ42's, HJ45's and even HJ61's....

yes, it is what the engineer said ...
but i hold the throttle just above idle for starting, if it is really cold then i crank the throttle control till just above idle and go have a coffee.
