SO...I came across an 85 TD truck here the other day and snagged it quickly. Its a one owner vehicle with 235,000 on the odo. The bed is rough but the cab is great. Floors are superb. Front fenders need help.

Picked it up in the beginnings of a snow storm.

Cold Start this morning...

This is a US Market TD, not a donor swap. All numbers match!

Debating on what to do for a bed and looking at ideas for a flat bed of some sort. Small lift and some good rubber. Nothing major just want a soild rig....

You suck. I am jealous. That is all. :flipoff2:

Definately looking for gauges now. Also looking for a TACH.

Dont be jealous...there's one on FLEA-bay right now...:hhmm:.

:hillbilly:

Jealousy has nothing to do with it... He just sucks plain and simple! Anyone with a Toyota Turbo Diesel does... I'm talking about you Dan!!!! :flipoff2:

Now go make a video that shows us the whole truck inside and out!

I heard that!!!! BTW--I updated my thread. The truck got cool-ified. Even more. I also drove back from Denver yesterday in 4WD in snowstorms and whatnot, and got the worst mileage I think I've ever gotten. 27MPG!!! WTF?!?! :flipoff2:

Very, very good score. I drove my truck about 40,000 miles before I added a pyrometer. It has completely changed the way I drive. And made me get better mileage. I will NEVER drive a turbo-diesel without a pyrometer again. Some hills that I figured were hot were not, and others that I never thought twice about kind of scare me now.

Living in the mountains I really want to keep an eye on my temps also...

Dan- did you install the pyro pre or post turbo. Seems to be alot of people taking both sides. Since mine will not be seeing heavy duty I was thinking post turbo would be sufficient.

2L-T

The 2L-T is a 2.4 L (2446 cc) turbo version of the 2L still being produced since 1985. The bore and stroke are the same but the 2L-T has a compression ratio of 20:1. Output is 86 hp (64.1 kW) at 4000 RPM with 139 ft·lb (188.4 N·m) of torque at 2200 RPM.

Nice score

What's the real life MPG's on it?

Actually do not have it on the road yet, getting tags either today or tommorow. The original window sticker for the truck states 26-30mpg depending on driving habits, etc. Have not had a chance to see what the old man will do these days.

Cleaning it up a bit also...degreasing and such. I hit the engine again and WOW did it ever clean up! Pics and vids soon...

I put my pyro just post turbo (maybe an inch downstream), so I play a little more conservative with my EGT's than I would if I were pre turbo. I consider 1000 deg F to be my maximum continuous EGT, and 1100 to be an absolute maximum for just a second or two. That is a little more conservative than the driving I was doing before I had the pyro, and it hasn't had a problem yet (knock on wood, but I do have a 2LT-E...).

If I were taking my exhaust manifold off, I would have installed it pre-turbo. I simply put mine post turbo because I was too lazy to buy a new exhaust gasket basically. My pyro is my only non OEM gauge too. If I had a good place to install one, I'd probably add a water temp gauge as well.

What is the maximum coolant temperature a 2L series engine should see? And where do you install the sender?

Dan, haven't you see my pillar gauge pod? Install one of those.

Taken from toyotadiesel.com and this is for POST TURBO pyro installation.

"(1inch post turbo, 2lte)

-500 degree (will not turn off engine unless under this temp)
-650-750 (city driving)
-750-800 (highway driving)
-850 (merging)
-850-900 (max i will ever hold, normally a headwind with a trailer)
-900-1000 (max i will ever go into off-roading)"

Good Reading here:
pyrometer - ToyotaDiesel.com

Pappy - is this the pillar pod that a guy wasmaking limited quantities of? Roughly $60 and has one, two, or three pods?

Looks nice!

Yes, Jeff Moskovitz is his name. I thought he only had 2 or 3 gauge pods. Doesn't matter since you should have no problem finding three gauges to stuff in there. Also, there was another company out there selling them, but I would rather do business with Jeff, Truckpillars.com.

SO many people have been asking if I'd sell the truck. The answer is yes, anything I have materialistic wise if always for sale. :hhmm:
