You should have a low mile SM465 too. Not sure which t-case but likely a 205.

The D60 is missing the hubs, you likely saw that. Warn makes a replacement set but all the bad-a rock guys just run slugs. I'd look for hubs.

Most of these trucks had very few actual miles. My axle set came from one with 40K miles.

And...you get a sweet GM diesel too!

TH400 and the transfer blew up at some point, which is why it sat for unknown years. I hope it does have low miles!

Good eye on the hubs. I intend to buy a set of lockouts.

What should I do with the GM diesel? I was thinking of setting it up on a run stand, getting it running then selling it.

Catastrophic wheel bearing failure is why this swap is being kicked into high gear.

And, the workspace.

Ouch.. If I were around I'd come help wrench.

No worries buddy! I slapped the front end together on Friday so I could get my CUCV parts.

Woke up at 6:30am on Sunday, drove to Gastonia, NC, met up with Martin and drove down to Grovetown, GA to pick up my CUCV. Ended up having to use a come-along to get the truck up on the trailer since we had to park the tow rig on an uphill incline. That was fun. Got out of there by 3pm, back to Gastonia by 6:30pm and started wrenching.

Less than 2 miles down the road this happened

In 6 hours Martin and I took the bumpers off, the front end apart, removed the motor and transmission, removed the axles and had it loaded on the trailer. By 2am we were tired, but done.

Took work off yesterday so I could take my time getting home, then my RuffStuff order came in:

Time to clean the garage and get prepped, because this front axle is going in.

Im excited to see that thing D60d!

Wondering about that lifted mini in the garage in the first pic. Did Moonshine struggle pulling the trailer with the axles in it? Looking forward to watching this swap.

That's awesome Johnny! I've got my geometry worked out and the D60 hung. I'm now waiting for parts to get the D60 together. I've been using its carcass to move around and trial fit since it's not as heavy without everything else attached.

Parts I've bought and arrived or are shipping:
  • NWF steering arms, 1 Ton TRE kit from Ruffstuff.
  • Picked up used 4.10 gears
  • knuckle rebuild kit, yep I decided to replace the king pin
  • WFO toyota pinion flange to use my existing driveshaft
  • Yukon Zip locker
  • Master install kit

We had a good snow weekend for my area last weekend and I was missing the truck. Hope I get this on the road before spring.

Mini in the first pic apparently had a bad transmission. The guy was selling it for $3000 as-is.

I can definitely feel the weight, but stopping was still within a reasonable distance and she went 60mph, in 4th, all the way home no problem.

Sick!! Would you mind sharing some pictures of what you came up with for your spring mounts (or update your build thread)? ;p

Those NWF arms are slick as hell. I might go buy some of those instead of from Parts Mike. Which ones did you get specifically? I need something that will work with stock H1 wheels.

Why did you decide to replace the king pin?

Why did you decide to go with a Zip locker instead of an ARB?

My plan for now is to get the axle under the truck and rebuild as need be. This axle only had 36,000 original miles, although it is nearly 30 years old. Sorry for the thousand questions, but you're almost done with nearly the same exact project I'm about to start :D

I will work on that this week.

I got these from Ruffstuff when he was having those sales at he end/beginning of the year. I wanted the spring-less design to be able to set my own preload and reduce/eliminate death wobble chances. I also wanted ones that had ackerman built in since this rig sees lots of asphalt. I think these are the best arms for that and they are seriously beefy!

Why did you decide to replace the king pin?

It looked like it had worn funny. If I replaced it now it would probably be the last time I'll have to plus piece of mind. The kits were reasonable and using the angle grinder trick to cut into the base of the pin worked great to make it easy to remove. To install the new one I bolted the axle onto the leafs (once those were set up) and went to town with red locktite and a big cheater bar.

Why did you decide to go with a Zip locker instead of an ARB?

Did a bunch of research and concluded it was more than strong enough for my style wheeling and cheaper than the ARB. In the overall picture I think the ARB is probably stronger but the zip will more than suit my needs and I didn't see any breakage reports during my research. It all has to do with setting them up properly as either can have leak issues. I was originally planning on going with an elocker but after studying the engagement pins I decided it wasn't going to hold up. This will force me to move forward with some kind of On-board air setup.

With that low of miles I think you've got a great plan. I didn't know the mileage on mine and while the PO was religious on greasing he never replaced a seal (axle clean up took me a while with the thick layer of grease caked on). I figured if I rebuilt it now while it was semi convenient for me that I wouldn't have to get back into it any time soon.

Thanks Mike, you are the man

I got in contact with NWF and they have nothing in stock (as usual) so the arms are 4 weeks out. At this point, that's too far out. Unless my timeframe changes, I'll be going with Parts Mike:

The on-board air setup is what is keeping me from going with an air locker. I loved how easy it was to use my Toyota E-Locker, but it's easy to find a ton of bad info about the Eaton E-Lockers. To keep it mechanical, I'm thinking about the OX Locker. Need to do more research :steer:.

The nice thing about the part mike arms kit is that it already has the studs and new bushings. My concern was potential clearance with the oil pan and Tie Rod with these arms putting it behind the axle. Do you think you'll have enough clearance even when flexing?

OX locker was also a consideration. I think all three (OX, Zip, ARB) are all good choices with each one having their good and bad points. I figured I'd eventually want a selectable in the rear and with ARB making the only selectable for the 14bolt (which with the popularity of that axle I think that's crazy) I'd have to go air anyways.

I had not thought about tie rod clearance to the oil pan, I was just thinking about the springs. Damn!! Time to take a closer look at it.

You know what, I just had that thought, that I'd want the same selectable locker front and rear, and ARB is the only one. ARB it is I guess.

What about OX cable lockers? I know they make a Dana 60 locker but I'm not sure about 14 bolt.... If it were me I'd go with cable if possible, I like the simplicity

Thought long and hard about that actually. If OX made a 14 bolt locker, I'd go that route, but they do not. It seems that ARB (air) and Eaton (electric) are the only ones that make selectable lockers for the 14 Bolt, and Eaton is plagued with strength and reliability issues.

Hahaha!!! Way to go Tommy Boy!!!!!

Gosh, I've been so busy I haven't touched my 62 in months. Makes me wanna cry :'(

As usual...you inspire!

I'm flattered buddy, thank you :D Work keeping you busy?
