The 73’ I picked up will need a clutch soon. This adds to my hesitation towards doing it. Interested if I drop it off?

What are you asking?

Clutch replacement on the 73’ fj40. At your leisure of course. I’ll shoot you a pm or a text if it’s something less sexy you’d consider. Obviously not for free.
I don’t do maintenance or service unless it’s one of my full projects.

Weird ass setup. 2F bellhousing with 1F clutch arm and side covers.

I got 4 speed stuff and hopefully it will be a much better setup.

Had to tap out one bolt in the flywheel. Feeling lucky.

Did not have time to stuff it back together today. Hopefully tomorrow….

Excellent read.
Obviously this is one of your favorite cruisers 🤔 to work on.

Just typing words so I can be subscribed.

Man love

Researching a few 3 to 4 speed conversions I’ve seen this mentioned. Doesn’t the 3 speed fly wheel have more mass or something?

You see the shape of the opening on this one? Like a spider? That’s 4 speed.

This is a transition year so I’m assuming Toyota used the old thick 3 speed flywheel and 3 finger pressure plate with the steel arm.

To make the “modern” 4 speed clutch and pressure plate work you need

Newer thin Flywheel
New clutch kit
Cast Arm with the correct bearing holder
Shorter pivot that the arm clips into. (The 3 speed style is longer)

Depending on the year of your truck you may need to reconfigure your torque tube

My one day project has of course become a tar baby.

Since I had to order parts from @cruiseroutfit for the clutch I dug back into a text from @ducksntrout about the small s*** he wanted fixed.

First, the 4 Plus carrier was frozen. Would not open unless you put all your weight to it.

I barely managed to get it off. Once off I polished it up and greased it up. Works great now

Next, passenger side has a loud wind howl on the highway
Maybe it’s because the bottom of the door has separated 😩

I’ve summoned the Wizard.

The hazards work but none of the blinkers work. I added grounds and a new flasher relay and no dice. I ordered a new switch from Kurt. Hope that fixes it.

Passenger door handle is about to fall off. Cheap ass china one. That side is still available OEM so I ordered one.

I’m sure something else will happen as it sits here on the rack tonight.

Man, this thing has your nuts on a bullseye.
Have you talked nicely to it? It’s how I got mine to behave. I wish I was kidding.

No kidding.

Truly this is why I don’t “work on Land Cruisers”

They all need to be stripped bare and built back right or you end up doing this s***.

What would you classify what you do on them? Massage them back into existing? You definitely have a knack (or what I like to call, “you give a sh!t”) for these beasts.

Sorry. I’m just ranting.

This is why I don’t like to do service work …….and I don’t (unless it’s one of my builds)….. which this one really isn’t ….but the owner is a great friend and I’m stuck with it until it burns.
