I already lightly resprayed it, but yeah, it was definitely grey

I pulled my spare wheel because I'm getting new tires all around and it's actually grey. I have a Jan '66 build date.

Here are some of my 66 brochures showing black rims. I admittedly don’t have any 1967 FJ45 brochures but I do a ‘67 and ‘68 showing black rims on the 40s. I see no logical reason Toyota would concurrently sell 40s with black rims and 45 pick ups with grey. Most likely your spare was sprayed grey by a PO or swapped with a later one. I could certianly be wrong but as Nolen stated his 1967 had black rims and I’ve seen many others over the years with black.

I hope you don’t mind me cluttering up your thread I always enjoy trying to figure out why and when Toyota made changes...

Man. Someone just posted a brochure from 67 and all the wheels were black except the LV. They were grey.

That said, I’m no expert but the 1968 factory brochure scans Treeroot gave me, the wheels were black.

Cool find on the spare. My 1967 LPB is/was 100% original and all 5 wheels were black

Nolen got a picture of that brochure? Toyota tended to recycle a lot of its images in its early literature. I imagine the LV in your ‘67 brochure is actually recycled from an early ‘64.

Here is one on the first LVs to come over in ‘63 notice the rims

That’s a factory Dunlop snow cruiser tire they came stock on 40s in the seventies. Which as I mentioned earlier leads me to believe your spare rim was swapped at some point.

No worries. I'm the same. This stuff is interesting to me too. Granted, my knowledge of cruisers is nowhere near that of original factory specs for my 348. Always willing to learn.

FWIW the tire on the spare rim has a 1980's date code. That said.... it's a riveted, not one piece rim. Would that not identify it as an earlier wheel?

Yes you are correct riveted I believe ended in ‘76 with the introduction of disc brakes.

Regardless grey or black rims it’s a beautiful 45!

That’s actually a 1965 45 pictured. If you notice Toyota hand drew/removed the fresh air vent at the bottom of the windshield from the picture next to the grader. But they left in the diagonal air inlet for the heater both of which ended in ‘65.

As I mentioned earlier Toyota loved recycling earlier model year images and crudely hand doctoring them to fit the correct model year changes appropriate for that years brochure.
Some of the doctoring are quiet amateurish and comical.

Can anyone show me the places where the removable top attaches to the body?

Was trying to remove my top earlier to clean up and get ready for new weatherstripping, and treating the channel with rust inhibitor, but it's stuck in the very center where the bottom of the top meets the tub. Both of the pins that go into the tub near the doors were rusted through. Is there another in the center? Any thoughts on getting the top off without damaging things?

O

Ooooh :)

Never seen a welcome from Toyota

My 1968 also has a set-screw down the B pillar that puts pressure on the center pin. I have not checked to see if 45 has it.

Www.cityracerllc.com sells the best gaskets to restore your top and seal it up.

Thanks. I looked around, but couldn't find any sort of set screw nearby. My guess is it's just rust holding it in place unfortunately.

I actually just got my replacement clutch flex line from City Racer. Great quality. I'll definitely check them out for the weatherstripping.

So what's the verdict on needing to run tubes in the riveted wheels? According to my tire tech a couple of the wheels had tubes, a couple didn't. They all seemed to be holding air fine. Anyone see a need for tubes in these wheels?

On the advice of a wiser, smarter friend I ran tubes and rust bands.

Currently running them without because the shop would have needed to order tubes in. I'll monitor pressures carefully over the next few days and see.

They told me if needed we can put them in.

The tech said the only one that seemed questionable was the spare which is pretty beat up to begin with.
