My FJ40 FINALLY arrived! And, judging by the pics, people in the forums tell me it definitely has a lift kit, but I don't know how high. I do know there is a sticker on the rear glass from CCOT that says "HFS (Hell for Stout) Suspensions". I'll attach a couple of pics to this, and although I know it's difficult to say without seeing it in person, but how big of a tire do you guys think I could stuff on these original 15 inch wheels? Also, I grabbed a tape measure and the current tires are about 30 inches tall, with LOTS of room. See pics, and let me know:
Is it just me or are the U-bolts on the front left completely lose, looks like a couple of inches of air under the axle.

Thanks for asking, because if so I would sure want to fix that! I had it towed to a shop today to strip the underside and floor pan and spray them with a bed liner material, so I couldn't walk outside and look. But, I zoomed in on the picture and it's an optical illusion. I'll attach 2 pics for you, and from the front view if you zoom in you will see there is a stamped steel piece that is flat on the side against the leaf springs, and on the top side it is curved to match the curve of the front axle housing. So that is the gap you are seeing, that piece between the leafs and the axle housing. It is possibly part of the lift kit. Looks to have a CCOT 4 inch lift kit with smooth ride. That was unexpected until it got here. And again, Thank You for reaching out. I appreciate that!

Surprise surprise...
So when my FJ40 arrived recently it was clear that it has had a CCOT HFS 4 inch lift kit installed. It sits a little higher than I would like, just simply because of surgery on my low back & both hips I don't want to have to climb to get in it (I'm not tall, dang it), but hey, that's what run ing boards are for.

Can anyone tell me the max tire size I can run with a 4 inch lift and the OEM 15 inch wheels?

Thank you!

@mattressking is running 35" tires on a similar (? I believe) setup. 33" would easily fit; might look small under 4" lift.

I definitely want something big enough that it doesn't look like a massive amount of space between the tire & fender, but do NOT want rubbing.

4" skyjackers, 33x10.50 tires

Max tire size may be dependant on rim width and back spacing. Personally, I won't go any wider than 8" rims. Beyond that the tires will stick out of the rear fender opening. 35's will probably rub a little on the rears inner fenderwell.

I'm running the original factory 15 inch rims.

Even with the 4 inch lift you think they will rub?

Most tires measure smaller than advertised. 35's may slightly rub the inner fenderwell when the suspension is flexed offroad. Typically it rubs the paint off and makes a shiney spot. You probably won't know or feel it when it happens. I had a friend run 36x12.50's on 8" rims on the street but couldn't run them off road because they would rub badly and bind with some suspension flex. He also had 35x10.50 swamper boggers on stk wheels for the trail.

You could install 1/4" wheel spacers with stk wheels to help alleviate rubbing, or lower the bumpstops.

After finishing the underside, I definitely do not want to rub anything under there.

How much 4 wheeling are you going to do?

Probably not a lot, and this is Florida so it's not like going rock climbing up in Colorado or something like that. I think there are some off-road courses and probably plenty of mud to get stuck in around here, but I can't imagine anything extreme.

Speaking of which, I know a lot of guys air down their tires when they're doing some off-roading especially when going over some Rocky areas. Are they doing that with biased ply tires, or steel belted radials too? This is my first 4 wheel drive.

Installed this 4" HFS lift 20 years ago and it flexes great to this day. Bilstein shocks and 35s on 15 inch rims with 1/4" spacers to help with rubbing the front springs at full turn. Love this setup, cruiser finally rides the way I want it to.

You can air down belted radials also. Helps a ton with traction, but also makes for a softer ride.

Fantastic! Looks great too! Glad to hear from someone with the HFS 4" lift too. Can't wait for my first ride in it!
