Based on the tundra youtube videos I've watched I'd say you're probably right. But....now I kind of want that extra 30-40%!

I think I might lop off the resonator and plastic weld it back to a straight tube and see what happens

It says "not legal in California" on the K&N website product page for the intake. I guess that means my smog guy will get bummed out when he sees it on my car every couple of years for smog testing. Not sure I would want to swap in and out the original intake every couple years for the test.

Have to really get rid of both chambers to get the full effect, but good lord my setup cost a lot more than that haha!
Well, maybe not a totally screaming deal. I also ordered one window belt trim piece at $30 ($65 at a Lexus dealer) and they ended up charging $63 shipping. Still, it’s cheaper than the $142 msrp just for the intake hose.

Yup. That's why the Tundra piece is so enticing as it would fly nicely under the radar.

Just got mine and it dropped right in. These pipes are a bit more complex than just a straight pipe in that it tapers from roughly 4" at the filter/MAF to 3.5" ID at the TB. I don't think any aftermarket manufacturer is going to bother with such a taper.

One caveat for LX owners. The resonator on the Tundra pipe comes a touch close here. Nothing a little grinding or sanding won't fix.

Started work on the "ghetto TRD" intake tube tonight. Got everything cut off, sanded down, plastic welded sealed, and sort of smooth. Will add in the nipples tomorrow and report back how she sounds! This took me about an hour. Dremel is messy but made quick work of it all.

Alright back with the final form. Tried epoxying the nipples on first and that didn't work. Even with roughening and cleaning the plastic it just didn't want to stick properly for some reason. Plastic welding them in did the trick. Also bought a 2 foot section of appropriately sized heater hose to replace the larger of the two lines (ended up trimming to ~21").

Only went for a short drive around the block, but sounds great so far! Much more noticeable without the resonator on there. Will report back once I've gotten a little more time on it.

Good lord sir you have done it..

Awesome work, all the result, DIY, looks factory, love it! The removal of the resonators is the key, it changes the sound dramatically.

Hope you’re enjoying it!

Thank you kind sir! Loving it so far! If factory is 0 and this is 100% I’d say the stock tundra piece is more like 30-40% of the noise instead of the 60-70% we were thinking. This is much more noticeable. And like you said, really comes alive under moderate to heavy acceleration.

Love it.. It totally changed the attitude of the car for me, I don't want an exhaust anymore. It actually adds a throb under load for the passengers, like a V8 should.

Put the stock Tundra piece in and the difference is hardly noticeable. Removing the resonator which will be next is probably the only way to make a noticeable difference.

Do it!

My car has circa 130km on it, do you think if I’m going to install this supercharger setup, with custom tune, I would want to do an engine freshen at the same time? Gaskets? Or just relax and enjoy?

I won’t be doing it too soon, enjoying as is for now, but it’s on the bucket list.

I'll echo this now that I have some time with it. Yes, the difference it noticeable the first day if listening for it. The second day, almost indistinguishable.

I've done a couple hundred miles towing which I thought would be more pronounced. And it is, incrementally louder and throatier under load. Never annoying, with still OEM levels of dB and tone. Could pass for a Tundra, but still more subdued due to Lexus levels of sound deadening at least on an LX.

Is the difference worthwhile? Perhaps. Not?

For just sound, probably not. Tundra one may flow a bit smoother though considering the inside of the lx tube has a lot more texture.

I did cut the Tundra single chamber off and found more growl but not sure giving up the chamber which is more than just a noise reducer is worth it.
